LD22

First LD

This is my first ever LD, though I’ve done other competitions before, including a 24 hour game jam at my school. I’m excited to start and looking forward to seeing what everyone else is able to do in such a short time span.

Good luck and Have fun to all contestants!

Let’s do this!

I’m in on this, even if the theme is kittens.

I’ll be using Stencyl to make my game, PS for the graphics, and Renoise/Audacity for music and sound effects (hopefully).

I’ll be livestreaming at www.twitch.tv/tempxiv and trying to keep my twitter (@NAMKCOR) up to date with the latest news.  My plan is to update this blog once every hour that I’m awake, so check back often!

Workstation

Here’s the battlestation I’ll be commanding from for the next 48 hours!

Here you can see the all-important whiteboard, as well as the little nook my desk is in.

Here’s a closer view of the desk itself.  I’ve got my laptop and external drive, as well as a scanner-printer, my gamepad, and a drumpad/cupholder that I use when I need to think.  I use the rubik’s cubes on the bookcase as well now and again.

6 hours and 20 minutes remain!

I have that same whiteboard :)

Resources for Glory!

Alright so,  just to cover all bases, here’s what I’ll be using in LD22:

Stencylworks (Flex) for the game itself, though I’ll be working with a blank project, nothing community made.

Renoise for the music, with some chiptune sounds I downloaded a while ago from the community.  They’re just individual wave patterns and noise patterns, without loops or anything, so the melodies and all will be entirely original.

SFXR for sound effects, because I totally -suck- at making these myself.

Paint.NET for sprites.  It’s all I really need ;o

For fuel I have some energy drinks, diet coke, and kettle chips to keep me going.  Here’s to staying up forever!

Sleep is for the week.

Alone!

Alright, time to get to work.

For the next hour at most, I’ll be whiteboarding, keeping notes and designing my document.

My livestream will start immediately when my whiteboarding has been finished, and I will begin my hourly updates here on the blog.  I’ll be streaming with some of my favorite music on, so tune in for the tunes or the game dev.

I’m in the #ludumdare channel on the IRC network, so if you want to ask me questions, or just gab at me, by all means send away, I can’t guarantee I’ll respond though.

GOOD LUCK, HAVE FUN!

Solus Ipse

The girl in the padded room.

Noel wakes up in a padded room, walls white and clean, a steel door in front of her.  Somehow she got here, something happened but she doesn’t know what.  Her head hurts.

It’s silent.

“Where is everybody?” she wonders aloud.  She gets up and walks to the door, hitting it with her bare palms.  “IS ANYBODY THERE?”

“No,” purrs a disembodied voice “You arrrrre all alone.”

11pm EST

12am EST

I feel like I’m a bit behind, but I’m doing this from scratch so eh, I guess.

Working on the movement and jumping, then I’m going to figure out a dialogue system, interact system, and keep going from there.  Might have one short story, but it’ll be cool I guess.  Not really too enthused about the theme right now, I don’t feel like this is the best idea I could come up with, but I’m pretty blank otherwise.

1am EST

Ok so scrapping my last idea before I go any further, it’s garbage.

I also had to stop livestreaming because my computer just can’t handle it (it’s not a very good one, unfortunately).

I’m back at square one, and back to thinking about interesting ideas, hopefully I’ll come up with something smaller and more ‘alone’ than what I was going for originally.

2am EST

Back in business, rolling out a new idea that sorta works as a social critique at the same time.

YOU ARE.

ALONE.

3am EST

Wild speculation as to what I’m making:

Don’t worry, the Foreveralone is just placeholder art.

I’m liking the look on those squares, but no I have no idea what you’re making. 😛 What were you coding in again?

4am EST

I have block spawning, working on a power meter and score, and then I’ll get the baddies in there, and the powerups.  A little late on this update due to getting food

5am EST

Baddies are programmed more or less, and I’m happy with the progress I’ve made now.

I’m going to take a break, and possibly a nap, then after getting some work done around the house, I’ll get on making some music, and better graphics for everything.

So far I’m having a lot of fun with this.

10am EST – Sat.

Sleep felt good.

Food will feel even better.

Then it’s back to work!  Had some interesting ideas as I was falling asleep so I’ll have to explore them in a bit.

11am EST – Sat

Back to work!

Time to do some spriting and music, I’ll post WIPs at the usual time.

12pm EST – Sat

Ok so I ended up working on a super move instead, it consumes more of your energy and has an awesome effect.  It should make it much easier for you to remain solitary.

I need to get graphics and music done, but I haven’t finished the gameplay stuff yet…

I need to focus :p

1pm EST – Sat

SENSORS!

Y U NO WORK?

I’ve got the F-Bomb showing up and etc… but the enemy won’t properly collide with it.  This is bothersome.  I know I’m making some stupid mistake but I’m not sure what.

Oh well, back to the grindstone.

2pm EST – Sat

Alright, I got the F-Bomb working, and the blocks are aligning to the grid properly, though I’ve not yet figured out how to prevent you dropping a block when the space is already filled.  After that, I’ve just got to make graphics for everything, and some music.  Game Over processing will be easy.

Right now though, I’m off to eat my first meal since LD22 started.  There’s only so long I can run on soda and chips alone, lol.

LD22 Meal Time

Pancakes, Fried Eggs, and Chourico.

It’s ok to be jelly, I would be.

3pm EST – Sat

Adding in powerups now, a flat points booster, a speed up, and a power regen up.  Should encourage the player to move around a bit more, and diversify play.

Also powerups are always fun.
