Ludum Try

So one online “friend” recommended we should do Ludum Dare. We all have our flaws so I decided to just do it. You know. What could possibly go wrong. If handicapping me by using Love for it instead of C# (which I have used more than just today) wasn’t enough.. it sure will not get better by not having created anything that remotely looked like a game in years. I can’t draw or think of epic tales about maiden in distress but I sure can code a bit but not enough to save my life or to do more than adding 1 to 1 to see it turn into 11 (while that may be a bit exaggerated).

So follow me in my magical journey of creating a game, if the game doesn’t make your eyes bleed the source code probably will.

3 hours in

So just three hours in and I starts to show that having never used LÖVE wastes my time a bit more on figuring things out than doing things. So far some things work but not all. One of my favorite parts right now is just digging the wiki for help and then trying it out.

The story

A small crew in a space station orbiting Mars need to evacuate because of damage to the station. Mars itself is being terraformed but the process is not complete. The stations job was  to monitor the progress. Its your job to find out who is physically and mentally capable to survive on Mars, for there is only one escape pod. You could of course be that person that just hops in without thinking of anyone else.

The progress

Mostly backend stuff handling things like characters and backgrounds. Some art but not all has been made and its looking like something already, but not like a game at this point.

So back to working on it.

22 hours and 45 minutes left

So to keep my sanity I procrastinated most of the day (mainly to not stress to much for personal life events coming up).

After having played with LÖVE than more 24 hours I now have the hang of it, sort of. Something I really miss in Lua compared to C# is switches. But now I have a engine where art and dialog with the options and other stuff is easily added. Still its badly programmed so expect your CPU to spike. While its possible you can use the engine for different games that are just text and options.

For the people that like to see stuff, progress (left oldest, right most recent):

And now time to focus 21 on art and dialog!

And its a wrap

Game is done now some random person on the internet is trying it out before I upload it :). There should be enough content to maybe waste a minute or two on.
