(Sorry for double post)
I'm maybe late for the Post-Mortem but it's better late than never :joy: .
If you want to check the game, it's here
It was my second Ludum Dare jam, the first one was with a friend and we were both programmers so the graphism was not that good ahah.
So this time I decided to build a team with some guys (My friend programmer, a game designer colleague, and an unknown 3D artist who became a friend )
We hadn't worked together before and it was a real challenge to work as a team on a game (first time with a real team for all of us). We decided to work with unity because we all wanna improve our skills on this one.
We were very nervous the night before game jam starts when preparing food and drinks
We had a good night after the theme reveal (00:00 for us, and we began at 08:00 AM).
We started the setup and go on with brainstorming to 11:30 AM
We knew we wanted a 3D isometric game, so the brainstorm was around that!
Then we were launched :rocket:
We had a good prototype at the end of Saturday with nearly all mechanics implemented. "Just" graphics, sounds, vfx, sfx, UI and some mechanics were missing, that was the job of Sunday
We had a 6hours night on Sat-Sun and began the Sun with a good mood and a lot of efforts in our bag :muscletone2:
The Saturday was about graphics and animation, vfx, sfx and the beginning of UI.
As nearly all of us worked on Monday, we ended it here and I finished some mechanics (like crystals and choices, and some UI elements).
Then, with Alexandre (Game Designer and UI) we ended the UI animation and graphics in the evening before publishing. We were able to publish a game at 23:30 it was just ahah.
So this game with that graphics and fx was created in 2 days plus a little of the 3rd
Saturday (with mechanics) -> Sunday (with graphics)
What went right:
- Work as a team, we were complementary to each other and it seems that we were made to work together.
- Graphics and animation were not that difficult to integrate (we planed 1 afternoon to integrate as we had never done that)
- Coding with a mate: With the other developer, we were used to working together but not on a big project like that and in the rush. It was a great experience.
- Our idea: Yes it came fast and the mechanics were clear very fast
- Bugs: We had no real bugs that took us a long time
- Learned a lot on Unity
What went wrong:
- Time: We wanted to do much more, and resolve some little "bugs" of UX but we preferred sleep ahah
- Sound modulation: We didn't manage to find the perfect sound volume between all sound with the time.
- We had a lot of game experience problems with player controls. Like the attack, the player stopped when attacking so we decided to implement a dash when attacking.
- We wanted to do a cursor but never managed to make it work in Unity :joy:
Future Improvements:
- Sound volume
- Player controls, improve the attack
- GamePad controller support
- Graphics: put eyes on the player to see his orientation
- A game tutorial
- Make life (red globes around the player) more obvious
- Balance: change the duration of a wave to do more waves, give money when finishing a wave, review cards cost
- Mini-boss at the end of waves
- Some improvement about hit boxes
- Dash on right click
- Com-com-com-combooos :comet:
Conclusion
We are very proud of what we made in 2,5 days (with sleep ahah) and for the first time together. For all of us, it's the best game we made.
We learned a lot about programming, integrate, vfx, Unity, ...
We had a lot of fun together and we want to renew the experience by doing other jams together
Special thanks to everyone who rated our game and left us feedbacks
See you in LD43 !!
