The making of Elemento

This LD was quite the rush for me, mostly at the end. First time making 3d, 2 games to make in one and planned for work on the team ended being alone.

But I did it and published my entry 30 minutes before the end: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/elemento

I could have improve a bit the UI but well time ran out.

Here is the timelapse!

The art behind Elemento

I'm not the greatest designer ever, far from it, but for my first 3D Ludum Dare, I'm not ashamed of my art ^^

Here is most of the asset I created this weekend for Elemento: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/elemento Feel free to try the game!

A post-jam version for Elemento

Hello Everyone!

For once I took the time to make a post-jam version of my entry Elemento (Play the original here if you didn't play it yet: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/elemento)

The post-jam version is available on itch.io only as a download as I want the jam version to be on WebGl during the judging.

It includes all the following sweet changes:

change log.PNG

I really wanted to improve this game a bit as I felt it was too hard to play and ran out of time during the jam for polishing it. This version is still not perfect but it's already an improvement.

Some screenshots highlihting the changes:

Anyway, I'm still not 100% happy with the result, but it was enougth to share ^^ More updates may come later

I'm rusty

I'm so exited for this next LD! I didn't participate to a gamejam since LD41! Time fly so fast!

My toolset and brain are a bit rusty, but I slowly clean them up and prepare.

I plan to use

  • Unity 2020.3.4
  • VSCode + all the extension for unity
  • Blockbench for 3D and animation if I make a 3D game
  • Blender
  • Paint.net because I love it :v:
  • bxfr
  • I may try the imitone + ableton combo or use https://pernyblom.github.io/abundant-music/index.html
  • Chronolapse
  • Trello to stay organized
  • Github to share the code
  • Itch.io to host the game

After the rush

And of course, as always, I will stream with Bu on https://www.twitch.tv/tobugis while we test all the other games! I'll post at that time where to suggest game for us to play. This was a major part of the fun in the past, playing all the other games while chatting with the community!

Ok, two days and 16 hours to go, I can be patient... How about you?

Yet another wallpaper!

As per tradition and to keep me busy while waiting, here is a wallpaper for the LD48; I like to keep a clean empty background to help focus.

(feel free to use it for anything legal)

Date Night - End of Day 2

It's has been a wild ride for @burchyn and I and we have more and more todo

We are two third of the way in time, one more day to finish the gameplay. We still need more model, musics, sound effects, testing, building, hosting, and many more.

Anyhow, here is a small preview of Date Night

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rWa1jNLWlXk

Date Night - The morning after

This weekend was amazing!

It started with a hype and challenge to stay awake until 3:00 AM CEST to see the theme reveal. We soldier on, half awake until it hit twitter: "Deeper and Deeper"

@burchyn and I had directly a very productive brainstorming, discussing many ideas, trying to find something unique and fun. We finally settled on Date Night!

For this Jam, we had decide to change things up, to tackle a few extra challenges. We wanted to learn more!

  • For the 3D design and animation, we would use Blockbench. A simplify block based 3d modeling tool mostly aimed at designing for minecraft mods. I used it a tiny bit in the past while contribution to minecolonies but Bu never saw it before and she would be the designer for this Jam.

  • For the code, I wanted to get rid of my dirty baggage and start fresh. Over the last Ludum Dare I joined, I slowly built a code framework of tools and utilities that where supposed to help me code cleaner and faster. However, this was also restricting me on how to make the game. This time, I wanted to start without it, code freely and without shackle. This was in order to learn different way of coding for Unity. The result? Well... It works but... it looks like a nice plate of spagetti if you know what I mean.

During the course of the three last day my mood went on a real roller coaster. From stress down that it was too much work, to exited that we made progress, back to worry that we will never finish, and back up again when I saw that the design was looking amazing.

happy-monkeys-riding-roller-coaster-with-sky_1308-38553.jpg

I didn't implement any gameplay before the end of the first day as I had many other foundation to build first. But having solid-ish foundation made the gameplay pretty quick to implement. The first game activity out of three was finished by the end of day 2 just before our first stream on Twitch

To make my emotional roller coaster even bumpier, Twitch throw a curve at us by unlocking our Affiliate status on our common channel https://www.twitch.tv/tobugis in the middle of the Jam. We will start testing your game live tonight by the way so stay in touch if you wish to participate.

Day 3 was a smoother ride. We slept a good night, at least according to my standard, woke up well rested. @burchyn created the last few model we needed and added animation. I finished the gameplay and then we started to work on the atmosphere: polishing the UI, color palette, adding sound fx, creating music with the help of ai to go faster, etc.

Then playtesting! We did so much test, spend a whole extra stream playing the game and taking feedback from Chat! Thanks everyone!

And suddenly: the game was done, we had 45 min left for the Jam and it was time to publish it!

How was your experience? Did you also took a ride on the roller coaster?

Ohh and did I forget to mention that we lost internet for the most part of the second day due to "issue on the network" from our ISP? Thanks a lot ISP, this was very helpful :D

New task: 6h left to play 120 times Date Night

There is 6h left before the end of ratings. Date Night takes 3 minutes to play, plenty of time to test it! :smile_cat:

If you didn't get the chance yet, we are searching for as much input as possible to potentially improve the game later!

Ludum Dare 49

I'm in and will stream my process

I’m so exited for this next LD! This year I plan try to stream at the same time as creating a game.

I really would like to try and create a game with twitch integration if the theme is fitting, but how knows? I will decide in 2h and 8 minutes :smile_cat:

As always, I try to learn new skills during LD, this time I will be testing sprite art with Aseprite. I'm not a designer but I can do pretty ok programmer art sometimes.

If you feel like cheering me up and check on me during the weekend, come say hi at https://www.twitch.tv/tobugis

I leave you with my practice artwork ^^ Meowgicat.png

Also, as per tradition, here is a wallpaper free to use :D I focused on an eye relaxing color this time. background.jpg
