When you look at the stars in the sky...
...it becomes clear just how small our world is.
I want to make a game about looking at the stars. Here's a mockup.

The stars glide across the sky... or am I just standing on a spinning rock? GIF
I have a spinning planet and stars implemented in Unity. The player can look around using the arrow keys. Exciting!
Seagazer is a game about looking at stars.

I just want to say thank you to the whole Ludum Dare community, jammers and organizers. This experience has lifted up my mood considerably and it was a welcome change of pace from the everyday humdrum. I feel more optimistic and excited about not just game development, but other endeavors in my life, both professional and personal. Ludum Dare has been nothing short of magical for me.
I got around to making a gameplay video for Seagazer, my compo game about looking at the stars.

"You wake up in a cave. Your power indicator blinks red rapidly. Panic.
"Luckily, this cave is littered with energy-laden crystals which you can consume to replenish your power source. Find your way to the surface, and don't run yourself out of power!"
Some early concept and design work:

Rough sprites:

In-game movement:

You play as an android with a gun arm. Be careful with using your gun though, it uses a lot of power!
Our game has shooting

The game is really coming together now.

It's been a long 72 hours -- and we're finally here! It's over! Come check out our puzzle game, Phil.

Finally got around to making some gameplay footage of our puzzling puzzle game, Phil.
What's beyond that door!?

Nearly everyone who played our game commented to say that they got stuck near the end. I have patched the game to add a checkpoint feature, so that being stuck should now be easier to recover from. Thanks to all who have played our game!

I made a gameplay trailer for my compo game, called Ways of Being.

I feel more or less recovered now after the grueling weekend, so I decided to reflect. Looking back, I'm actually amazed at how focused I was. I've done a few game jams now, and I wanted to share a technique I used that I think was pretty effective.

What you're looking at is an hourly time table, which I maintained throughout the jam. Whenever I finished a chunk of work, I would write down a description of the work, and the time slot I finished it in. This worked wonderfully in two ways: (1) I now had a spatial representation of the time I spent on various tasks, showing me exactly what I've already completed, and (2) I have an intuition of how much time it's going to take to complete upcoming tasks.
When I'm in the heat of the moment, I find that the concept of time tends to slip away from my conscious mind, and my memory of even the last few hours is hazy, which stresses me out. I found that this technique of "mapping out" my time was immensely helpful in helping me stay calm and focused throughout the jam.
Hope this helps or inspires you for future jams!
If anything in that time table piques your interest, feel free to leave a comment or play my game!
I'm making a game about cleaning up, inspired by cleaning up real-life messes and trying to get organized in my real life.

I'm using PuzzleScript.
I'm done! If you're in the mood to play a short puzzle game, check out my compo game and let me know what you think.
