LD31

(Late) First beginnings

Hi all,

Well. I’m starting this jam a bit late, aren’t I?

 start

Humble beginnings

I’ve thrown many ideas around today and one definitely stuck. My main shtick is the whole screen being filled with a map but running in the background is a first person emergency-escape-spaceship-labyrinth-hell-zone.

As the player, you will only see the map on screen and will have to navigate yourself with the mouse and keys by paying close attention to the positional sound (and the markings on the map which correspond with the sound). I’m working on ideas to make this more interesting than just an a to b (and less of a maze) but won’t spoil too much at this point. I’m looking to flex my sound design muscles as much as possible here.

I remember an indie game from some PC Gamer disc having a similar concept (guiding yourself using sound on a completely blank screen) and really enjoying that. If you made that back in 07’ish (I think) and are reading this, thanks for the inspiration!

I’ll be using Unity / Wings3D and Logic to create this thing. I’m not sure what I’ll use to make the graphical map yet!

Oh Dear

Well, as much as this post sucks to make, I won’t be able to submit my entry for this LD.

The main lesson I’ve learnt is: book time off work in advance and manage time effectively! I left too much to do on the last day. I felt like every feature I wanted to implement wouldn’t complete the package unless a lot of other stuff was done first. As this was officially my first LD, I didn’t want to release anything that didn’t represent the quality I would be proud of.

Nevertheless, like my other comrades (looking @ the URL (compo/2014/12/08/oh-dear-8/) have 7 other people used the same title today??) whom have failed to submit in time, I have not suddenly lost all work I put in; I still have ‘half’ a thing made! So this jam was beneficial in motivating me to try new ideas and I’ll continue to finish this game as I’ve enjoyed working on it so much.

Looking forward to playing all your games tomorrow!

You still have 2 hours. Anything you can cut or simplify to get it in?

I would have had to cut too much, until there was only a shell of an idea :-(.
