Low-poly modeling and how it was used in Drum'n'Ice.
Greetings, fellow Ludumdearers!
It is I, the Spirit of Groove! Coughs Or, the voice of the spirit, to be precise. xD Name's VenomousMouse and it's nice to meet you all here. This is my, and my teams, first time on Ludum Dare and we are glad to be here with you. I'm the 3d artist of my team and today i want to talk to you about our process of making low poly assets. For 3d artists that work in the industry it can be not a big thing to read about, but for those who just start as 3d artist, or 2d artists that want to master 3d, it can be interesting.
As for me, i'm working as 3d artist for 5 years. Worked on different projects, and had a chance even to work as a tutor. So, let's start! The main thing in creating low poly assets is to not overdo it.
When doing low poly asset, always check the silhouette. 2d artists also know how important silhouette is, and same goes for 3d medium. If your model from a far looks readable and recognisable, than you are doing it right. All edges that do not benefit silhouette and overall form can be discarded. And do not be afraid of making a tris. If you see a polygon with a strange shading, cut it in half and see how it looks.
Next step is adding detail to your low poly model. And for that part, again, silhouette is your best friend. If those details benefit overall shape and readability, than it's good. If not, better to discard them.
And last, but not the least, is how to add those details. Lat's imagine that you have a cylinder and you want to make a mug out of it. You want to attach the handle and you start to cut, or do boolean and so you will need extra edges to hold it together, etc. That's one way. Or you can just take a donut, cut it in half and move the over half to the cylinder, so it looks like a handle. And voila! If it reads as a mug form a far, then its a mug. Just don't forget to unite the cylinder and the donut.
That will be it for today! I was glad to meet you all, hope my post was interesting for you. And I will see you again!

P.S. We would like to play your games, so feel free to drop links in comments. Also, if you want to check our game, here is our link:
