Meet the new and real Life Merchant

While creating life merchant, the "Salesman" wasn't supposed to be a tent, it's supposed to be a person, thus the name "Life Merchant". Due to lack of time, I only had a tent in my assets sheet and ended up with that. I'm currrently working on improving the game. So! among other things, I introduce you the freshly drawn (and animated!) Life Merchant, In all its glory!

Wrapping Up: The Final Update is here!

![bannerUpdate.png] (///raw/5d1/3/z/24f55.png)

Hello everyone!! This has been a super interesting month for me. It's the 3rd time I try to compete in Ludum Dare, but the first time I actually managed to finish a game. It's an amazing experience, I never thought that the real fun began after finishing the game and entering the rating stage. Getting to play all of your amazing games, and not even reaching 10% of them is overwellming and beautiful at the same time. The amount of feedback and kind words I received has no price, and I apreciate it deeply. I promised to keep working on my game, as many of you suggested. So, I kept my promise, and here it is, the final update. I really took more than I expected but I'm pretty happy with the result. With no further introduction the changelog:

Fixes and changes

  • Fixed a bug where the player was able to interact with the merchant during the fadeout animation
  • Fixed a bug where the player got stuck inside the skeletons when they moved to the same spot
  • Fixed a bug where the player was able to move after finishing the level
  • Fixed a bug where the player was able to buy the Life Merchant more items, making him go 1 year old
  • Player can no longer push rocks trough open gates
  • Skeletons can now be killed using the gate (That one's for you, sadistic streamers)
  • Player can no longer stay over an open gate, It'll be jumped and move to the next spot

Adds and improvements

  • Added fullscreen
  • Added constant moving holding movement keys
  • Added new mechanic press-plates
  • Added 3 new levels
  • Added an intro cutscene explaining a bit of my background idea
  • Added a proper ending cutscene to close the humble backstory
  • Some levels were reworked to complain with the new mechanics
  • Added Life merchant animated Sprite
  • Removed merchant tent
  • Some levels were redesigned to look better
  • Fixed some visual bugs
  • Added new messages

This was a great experience, I thank you all again, And see you next Ludum Dare!!

PS: I'll try to write a post mortem later!

You can play it here!

My grain of sand on duplicates

Hello everyone,

I've been reading about this duplicates issue so I tried to add my grain of sand to the problem. I ran some deduping of the full themes list and it seems that out of 6327 theme suggestions, only 927 are exact duplicates, which is below 15%.

Anotación 2020-04-07 200713.png

The thing is removing duplicates is not an easy task, because you have to find: + a) Exact matches + b) Semi-Exact matches: themes that are the same one but misspelled or with a special symbol like a "." at the end + c) Themes that are extremely similar and can be clustered together

C is not as simple as removing exact matches. I think, since LD is Open Source, we can do something about it.

So, if we are going to add something for future jams, we should probably think about preprocessing the themes list.

IMO Preprocessing should:

  • 1) Remove exact and "Semi-exact" matches but keep the number of appearances
  • 2) Cluster similar themes under one unique entry +3) In the UI:
    • 3.1) Show themes along with the number of appearances
    • 3.1) Show clusters of themes that are very similar under one unique entry

This way no theme is removed and all similar ideas can be approved or denied all at once.

It's just an opinion, let me know what you think

Cheers!

Edit: If anyone wants the full list as an spreadsheet here it is

I'm in for my 5th time

This is the 5th time!

I'm going to participate, but from the previous 4 I only made it in 2. First time I participated was LD 38, and it was a complete mess, I was part of a team of unknown people from different countries with really different time zones, it's a complete mess. We tried to make a city builder on a shrinkable island.

The Second time I tried to participate was the one where the theme was mix two game genres. I tried to make a tower defense fishing simulator, but I ended up having too little time that weekend and never finished. From there I started actually finishing, LD 44 and LD 45 where my officially finished LDs, and my games were:
