LD32

(I think) I’m In for my 1st LD!

Hi from São Paulo/Brazil! First time on LD here! 😀

For the last 2 years I kept telling myself that “will enter LD this time” and couldn’t do it because of real life events / (lots of) work.

I’m going for the Jam, because I’m too sissy scared of doing the compo (though the Jam also gives me the shivers >_<). Hope LD will be a good opportunity to level up my skills and get some nice experience with you all!

I used to work with advertising and had some experience with works on a tight schedule, but this will be the first time I’m on my own (and I have no idea if I’ll have a good idea for the game).

I’m still choosing the tools I’ll be using. But if I’m able to take part this time, it may be one/some of these:

– Engine: GameMaker, ClickTeam Fusion, Haxe/OpenFl (most probably this one, since I’ve been practicing the most lately);

– Art: Mischief, Photoshop, Paint.net, Graphics Gale, Aseprite, TileCraft, paper and pen (?);

– Sound: sfxr/bfxr, FL Studio, Sonar, Skale Tracker;

Good luck to everyone!

I’m (still) in for my first LD

Still in, didn’t back down since the “mandatory I’m in” post, totally afraid I’m gonna fail (most certainly will), but going for it!

Will go for the Jam, but with the spirit of the Compo (gathered some courage, and will try to do everything from scratch) so, if I finish it early, who knows? 😛

I usually have a small sandbox project with some helper functions, pseudo-code and methods, like a small notepad for reusable code, is it ok to use it for the compo? (I know you can use code base you may have, but it doesn’t hurt to ask and confirm 😉  ). Decided I’ll be using Haxe + OpenFl to develop, BTW.

Will try to do a timelapse (easiest for me now, as I’m too “shy” to go live ;P), will be on Twitter and try to setup a blog also.

Good luck for everyone in the Compo + Jam! I hope we can have a LOT of fun! 😀

Yes, for the compo you can use base code so long as you share that base code before the start.

Hmm…thanks!

It’s today, it’s coming, I’m scared as hell, but going for it!

Setting up some repos for LD32 and some code I use while studying (mostly tutorial and math stuff) on my github. This stuff is easily found on the web, but I’m sharing my versions/tweaks to stay in a safe zone in case I get to finish my project in time for the compo. Also, it could be useful (not certain) for starters (as I am) and lead to some discussions on improving this stuff. :)

For those who adventure in these repos (mostly “haxe-dump”), they’re pretty unrefined stuff (gotta do some cleanup later) and part of the comments are in portuguese (brazilian). But I made sure they are really basic and easy to understand stuff (so comments are irrelevant, I guess :P).

Gotta sleep a little bit before work and LD, but I’m anxious…>_<…

Also gotta prepare some snacks and drinks…

‘Tis gonna be a long day today, oh boy…=_=

Final preparations for the compo/jam?

Just updated my LD32 repo at github (https://github.com/yuigoto/LD-32) with a blank game project (Haxe/OpenFL project for FlashDevelop).

I also put some code for a FPS/Resource monitor and the code I use to draw my company logo.

Is it ok to use this for the compo?

Also…gotta clean up my desk and get some snacks! I’m shivering >_<

Last minute code base dump! :P

Just updated my reference code base on github at the last minute (http://github.com/yuigoto). Put some AS3 code from tutorials on web and somethings that might be useful (since is similar to Haxe). 😉

I hope this is ok for the compo :P…as I don’t have an idea on how to make the game for the theme! 😛

EDIT: Will aim for the jam, but if I can do everything on time and by myself, will go for the compo! >_<

FINALLY GOT AN IDEA!!!

YEAH! First LD, First Idea in the first few hours!

I wanted to have an idea ready as early as possible so I could tamper with programming and make it happen!

And, from what I see, I can execute this! 😀 Will try to do it as fast as I can, so I can submit to the compo but if not, will refine it enough for the jam!

It will feature:

  • Zombie fruits! (puuuuuuuuuuulp…o_O);
  • It will be a 1 stage survival-shooter (easiest thing I could think);
  • A fruit character;
  • A pun;
  • And an unconventional weapon!

Will build it in Haxe, using OpenFl! If not possible, will switch to Stencyl on GameMaker, but I feel like I can do it! And if I can do it, it will be my first “finished” game!

Good Luck for Everyone! /o/

Best of luck! I just got my idea up and running :) Exciting times!

Basic player movement…almost nailed! :3

Started working the player mechanics…graphics will be the last part…

Almost nailed the basic gameplay mechanics I want for my game :3

Will try to release an HTML5 version together with Flash + Windows Native 😀

Gotta finish some basic player stuff today before sleeping (already 2AM here in Brazil :P).

dude, it was 3am when i began xD

Oh Damn, I Slept! :<

So, tried to nail mechanics before sleeping, in the end I slept! ó_ò…my timelapse will have a huge gap! >_<

Gotta make up for the “lost” time. 😛

Ended up napping a little bit

Ended up napping because didn’t get enough sleep…:P

First screenshot! /o/ And I think I have a small problem with health! /o/

I thought it would be easier…

I should have gotten enough sleep also…napping almost at any break I take 😛

Still didn’t nail 100% of the player mechanics. If I can nail player mechanics and basic enemy behavior, will be able to work on sound :3…

Will try to keep it simple…because I keep thinking about features when I don’t have time…

I’m watching these ideas and…

…I’m getting the shivers of seeing some nice things in here while my is on 150% prototype stage! 😛

Still on mechanics…must work at least 90% the way I want :)…then graphics + sound

Between programming and head hammering sessions, I’m drawing the characters for my game…so frooty…:9

Feeling your pain. My characters only exist as sketches for now…

Still working on mechanics…

I’m getting there…I think…almost…no…not yet…I’m scared! :(

This GIF is awfully recorded…:(…anybody knows a good capture app/software?

Microsoft Expression encoder 4 .. Free version can capture up to 10 minutes of video

Oh thanks for the tips! :)

Almost nailed the gameplay and camera the way I wanted!

After 8 hours thinking…finally something for my “arena” shooter :3…

Refinements ahead!

Sorry that FPS is really low, but Expression Encoder is making it this way… :(

Finally, better FPS! :3

Finally, FPS on native windows port is good enough (recording doesn’t show, though :<)! Gotta do some basic AI and graphics today if I don’t sleep. 😉

I think this game will have only one survival stage. Will do what I can to make it refined. First LD sounds more exciting now that things are going well. 😀

About the game, I still need to finish a few things, but what can I say is:

  • Is, somehow, I think, really, a family-friendly” zombie “arena” shooter where you don’t have control of the bullet direction;
  • The more ammo you have, the less you bleed;
  • The less ammo you have, the more you bleed (genius, yeah, I know :P) and health keeps decreasing;
  • Ammo and Health recover automatically when not shooting;
  • It’s about fruits!

I hope the end result will be fun and playable. :)

Wrapping up 1st Day

Wrapping up first day (3:47am already here in Brazil). :3

Got movement done, camera also done, very rudimentary AI (really, a poor man’s AI if I can say :P) and a basic UI with health and ammo bars. Lots of room for improvement, but will do basic stuff.

I’m particularly fond of the bars…influenced a lot by this nice nice post by r2d2upgrade.

Since it’s my first LD, I decided, for now, to keep it even more simple as planned. I was thinking too much and found out it would be pretty hard, since I’m doing it alone with some spirit for the compo. Besides, I can tweak it later and make it a better game. 😉

I’m certain my skills as a programmer improved (even if a little bit) so, for me, I already got myself a nice prize. 😉

Good Luck to Everyone! :) And Good Night! 😛

Rewriting and doing a lot of things…>_<

Soundtrack is ready, sound is ready…gotta finish character sprites and clean/redo code…

Main char is ready, though :3

Simple idea, simple game…but I think it’s good for the first time :3

Finally graphics!

Spent the night re-doing most of my project from scratch because of graphics (mainly the player sprites).

Turned out nicer than I thought and gave a little bit more motivation.

Simpler than I thought, but feels nice for the first time (at least for me :3).

Gotta finish those mobs, some screens and I’m done! 😀

And…yeah…my game is about a strawberry that spins and shoots at random 😛

Sorry for being inappropriate. But it’s funny that if you would do the same thing with a human, he would probably be ejaculating on the enemies.

Almost finishing…I think…now entitled “Berry | The last straw” and I’m REALLY sorry for this :3

Just decided on a title (been thinking about this one since the beginning, actually), and I’m really sorry for the ridiculous one. Can’t think of anything else, didn’t get enough sleep. 😛

Gotta finish the score display, time display, title screen and game over screen.

Once again, no sound in this video (still don’t know if Expression Encoder supports adding audio track).

Good luck for everyone still finishing stuff (including me :3).

Been looking forward to playing this one!

Whoa…finally made it! :3

Finally submitted my first “finished” game, for my first time on LD. Went for the jam with a “compo” spirit, so I did everything (art, code, music), and that’s why it’s crappy. But it gives a REALLY nice feeling of satisfaction (even though a little bit rushed).

It didn’t come out as I thought it would come, I did a LOT of mistakes, but that’s fine. It was a REALLY nice experience and will try to write a good post mortem later.

For now, just want to say thanks to everybody who commented, answered my noob questions and endured my rambling!

And, some self-promotion: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=50909 (beware of crappy game! I’m warning you! :3).

I’ve also put all the code and assets on GitHub (https://github.com/yuigoto), so feel free to read a bunch of rushed things, messed code and poorly writen classes. 😛

And here’s some crappy art:

Now I can also play a LOT! Lots of nice bookmarks and I don’t even know where to start!  😛

How Berry came to be ~Some kind of a post-mortem

its-over-now-berry

Hi! I’m Fabio, developer of “Berry | The last straw”! :)

This is long, still didn’t sleep much, I might have written a load of crap, got confused a little and put some ramblings inside, you’re warned! 😛

For those who find it too long, the abridged TL;DR:

What went wrong:

  • Bad project management and planning;
  • Redoing everything from scratch two times to “improve” code;
  • Not thinking carefully instead of implement the basics faster;
  • “Thinking” too much looking at the screen/paper;
  • Bad sleeping pattern and posture;

What went right:

  • Albeit rushed, and with flaws, I found the game fun to play;
  • I really liked how the circular bars came out;
  • I liked how the character turned out;
  • Haxe skills improved (I think);
  • Liked how the soundtrack came out (melody got stuck in my head);

There are probably more points in it, but I didn’t put it because, although I said abridged version, I did it without writing the full text first :P. And, now, the main text.

Ludum Dare started, for me, on April, 17th, at 22h local time (I’m from São Paulo, Brasil, BTW) and ended Monday, 20th, also at 22h. It is my first time on LD or any other jam and the first time I make something for release.

As soon as the theme was announced I got a little bit lost because it wasn’t the theme I ranked first in my wanted list, but still I wanted to give it my best and do something.

At the time I was on the LD IRC channel and somebody posted an online spreadsheet for theme brainstorming. There were some pretty nice themes, some were a little bit too unconventional (I put things like “Gorgonzola Cheese Past Expiration Date“, “Nostrils” and “Hello, World!“), but still I didn’t get an idea.

I had an idea after looking into some food photos on my PC and seeing photos of berries and grapes, and I thought about this seed-shooting strawberry thing. I had made some comics about living fruits before (in 2006, I think, and it was called Frooty), with some zombified fermented grapes. Decided to mix this with the strawberry thing in the game, for a survival arena shooter. I was really excited about my idea.

While I didn’t have much experience/training with Haxe and OpenFl, though I made some prototypes on subjects I find interesting, the idea looked simple enough to be done and I thought I could complete it fast enough (code-wise) and do a good work with graphics and audio.

I did a few things and found some progress on character movement and other things, like the health bars, rudimentary AI and other basic stuff. But I tend (like a lot of people) to not be satisfied with the work I’ve done.

I put almost all the code into an “old/scratch” folder and did everything from scratch, to make the code “cleaner” and to try to improve on some calculations. This was the start of everything that made the project go slower.

Instead of redoing it (and I did it TWO times) I should have made it carefully from the very beginning. Instead, I wanted to have the basics working as fast as I could and forgot to properly organize code and rename things. I also wasted a lot of time doing other things and “thinking” while looking at the screen/paper.

The finishing of all screens was rushed and done with a lot of copy/paste from within the project itself, and I packed submitted in a rush. There were lots of things I wanted to implement that I couldn’t because I spent so much time thinking and working the basics.

Some of them are here:

  • Instead of a square arena, I wanted it to resemble a fruit bowl/have an ellipse shape;
  • More characters for mobs, a secondady playable character;
  • I wanted to make it more top-down 2.5d;
  • Obstacles placed randomly;
  • Better collision system for mobs/player;
  • Better management for full screen mode;
  • More refined UI, scoring system and a high score table;
  • Better controls on the Android port;
  • Improve stability and performance (Windows native is the most stable :/);
  • Better sound effects and music;
  • Work more on art;
  • HTML5 support;

But, while it has (lots of) flaws, I find the game quite fun to play and, also, it’s my first “finished” game, the first step on a journey I’ve been wanting to take for the last few years but couldn’t, so I’m quite proud of it.

I also liked the work I did on the main character, on the soundtrack (I get myself humming it a lot and put it on repeat a little bit :P) and some of the code I did, specially on the Health/Ammo bars.

Taking part on this LD helped me improve my Haxe/programming skills in general (I think) and made me realize the important of a lot of things during game/app development, how important and nice all the feedback is, be it good or harsh and how important speaking with people is (even if just on chat or social networks), because I tend to avoid discussions and conversations.

It also helped me give even more value about my real work (I’m a web developer, working with PHP) and work of other developers, since a lot of people I work/worked with tend to think that just by working from home, in front of a computer, my work is easy peasy, when it’s not.

Resuming everything: I did a lot of errors, the end product is flawed, but I’m proud of it because I made it! Taking part in LD has been a really nice experience and I totally want to take part in it again and also on the Mini-LD and other game jams out there. 😛

And, that’s it! Thanks for reading and sorry if I talked too much, talked a lot of crap or if my english isn’t that good.

I hope to have a lot of fun playing the games made for LD and have even more fun building my future games.

P.s.: I plan to expand on the “Berry” idea. I will try to make a post-compo version, but I’ll make a separate game for this improved idea and I hope it’ll be fun to do, without the time constraint, and fun for everyone to play! :)

P.s.2: If you’d like to give the current game a try, the page it’s here: http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=50909

P.s.3: I did 2 timelapse videos and will post’em here when I upload them. I had some problems recording the timelapse and also editing things (I edited out most of the personal stuff, like Facebook and E-mail, because of personal life and work-related things :P)
