This time, compared to previous game jam experiences, I spent the shortest time in the "random brainstorming" phase and the longest time "refining the initial design document."
In previous LD processes, I would generally spend 2-4 hours completing the entire conceptualization phase. The result of the conceptualization might be incomplete, and then I would spend the remaining time quickly building the program while refining gameplay details. About half of those 2-4 hours would be spent in "random brainstorming." During this phase, I would constantly throw various ideas at myself or gameplay inspirations associated with them until I finally decided on which theme to choose, which required a considerable amount of time.
In this competition, however, I decided to create a "mercenary group simulation and development" game in about 30 minutes. This idea came up quickly, possibly related to my recent fantasy of a non-existent game where I imagined I could play anything, engage in real-time battles, and make a name for myself among kingdoms. At the time, someone pointed out that the "kingdom conquest" part of my idea might just be my imagination and would be difficult to make interesting (unless the game is very similar to "Mount & Blade"). In this competition, I decided to take this opportunity to create a "cultivate Troop" gameplay. Its goal is to build a basic cultivation framework that allows me to add storylines and, in the future, incorporate kingdom and city systems. Ultimately, it took me 10 hours to complete all the design plans and story scripts.
The progress afterward was swift, and in the end, I spent a significant amount of time playing the finished product and fixing bugs. If you're interested, you can try out this work.

I finished this game jam on the floor of an airport gate waiting area — but moving house wasn’t going to stop me from taking part in Ludum Dare 58!
I’m proud to present The Witch Chef 🧙♀️ — a project my sister and I poured a lot of time and effort into.
Grab, throw, click, and experiment to uncover all the lost recipes!

Hey everyone! 😊 Finished our Ludum Dare entry — we’d love to get some feedback! Feel free to drop and give some feedback!!! Here’s ours: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/58/embers-wildfire

I will only have time to play approximately 15. Stop on by and leave your game in the twitch chat! https://www.twitch.tv/bluepinstudio
I'll left details on how it's made, but here's the game to play:

I've finally found some time to write a post mortem, so here we go.

It was quite an intense weekend and I’m fairly happy with how everything turned out. I spent a lot of time redrawing the graphics. You proably can’t tell because they’re still kinda meh. But trust me, what I had before was much worse. You can still see the floor tiles which I originally had on the menu screen. But you can’t really recognize that there are supposed to be leaves on the floor and so I redrew it with the lighter version that is now in the level. It also took about 6 attempts to get a tree that was somewhat ok looking. I don’t really have that much practice with these things.
The sounds of the crows and the falling nuts were recorded on saturday in the local park. I am really happy with how the cawing adds to the ambience of the game and it was time well spent to find a crow that would let me record it. I also have some recordings of rustling leaves and subtle rain but didn’t have time do do anything with it. I would have liked to have the weather change as the game progresses.
Here is an image of the nut that produced the impact sound. The crow was too far away for a picture unfortunately.

The magic effect was a last minute addition. Originally I wanted just add a way to sprint with a stamina bar (which is why it is bound to the shift key) that you could replenish by eating nuts. However I thought it was too confusing to have a separate key for consuming the nut. I also didn’t like the look of a stamina bar in the UI. At the same time I wanted to give the players some way of defending against the crows. The squirrel already had the hat, so I decided to combine all of these features into the “aura” that lights up around the hat while magic is active. The brighter it is, the more ‘stamina’ the player currently has and the faster they move. I feel like this worked out quite nicely. Do let me know what you think!
Of course I also had many more ideas that didn’t make it in time.
Let me know if you have any more ideas or feedback!

Love you all ❤️❤️❤️
