Last time I ended having less than 10 hours to make a Compo game (which actually turned out to be a great challenge)!
This time though, I believe it's nice to have at least a simple boilerplate and prep myself even more for 2D/3D projects I am willing to take.
Unity boilerplate prep :tools:
- Check if TextMeshPro is working (last time I had some issues with fonts)
- 3D - Install and check Unity ProBuilder - great tool for prototyping and doing simple and mid-complex 3D assets which ended up being a main graphics/assets choice for One of my entries 🚢
- Install and check Unity Atoms - Tiny modular pieces utilizing the power of Scriptable Objects - so I can have my variables and events organised
- 2D - Check lights / shadows in a confined area. Re-check tutorials on glowing textures using shaders Like the one from Brackeys (uses older version of Unity, so with new one a lot of those options are already present now)
- Check connectivity with your IDE - I switched from VS Code to Rider when VSC decided not to cooperate. If you're a student, you can get a free license or you can try it out for 30 days!
Prep ideas on last voting spree :star2:
During the final voting spree, you're left with about 16 potential themes. In previous LDs, I used to wait with curiosity until the actual theme is revealed and then grab a piece of paper to scheme the potential ideas for a game. This time however, I would like to do a hot-seat idea generation based on every potential theme in the final voting round. That way at least I will be prepared even for the theme I don't feel comfortable with.
Understand your strengths and weaknesses :muscle:
After a couple completed LDs, I managed to get a brief idea on what am I good with and what I still lack on. I also cannot stress enough on how vital the initial time spend on generating ideas on a piece of paper is. That way, you're able to identify the potential scope of the game and quickly bury all the unnecessary features and tweaks before diving into the prototype.
Good luck to all :fireworks:
Remember, no matter if you finish or not.
Whether you go with Compo/Jam/Extra.
Whether you pummel down in reviews or get 5 stars in every category (I wish to all to get them at one point haha).
The sole reason you decided to come here and participate is a success on it's own!
