Anyways, that is my game ergo. I would love it if you would give it a try :). Read on for a little bit about my experience this jam.
I had this cool "Hotline Miami meets the quicksilver scenes from the X-men movies" idea for this theme, but Friday night I was just not feeling motivated or inspired. So I pivoted my goal from making a game that would test all my skills and time management to making a simple game and focusing on gamefeel.
If their are any Spyro fans in the room, this game is inspired my a puzzle from Ripto's Rage. A grid of tiles, where if you switch the colour of one tile, it flips the colour of all adjacent tiles. I took the basic mechanic of the puzzle and remixed a bunch of ways which was really fun. I wanted the game to have a relaxing feel so I incorporated the theme so that every 10 seconds random tiles would turn to their correct colour. This mechanic might actually take away from the game, because although it is intended to help you, often it doesn't or you are just waiting too long for it to help you.
Overall I am happy with the game. I find clicking the mouse really satisfying. I learned about Gamemaker's effect layers which are pretty cool (I have an unhealthy obsession with visual noise). I am also happy with the interactive tutorial, I made it last minute but I find they can be very important for gamejam games. If I do a postjam version it would include colour schemes, more puzzles, mobile support, and a mode with the 10 second mechanic off.
If you made it this far thanks for reading :) To keep up to date on my games you can follow me Twitter @retrowillgames or on itch at https://retrowill.itch.io/
It is always hard to know how to tune the difficulty for a game jam game. Often we get both comments that the game is too hard from some players and too easy from some even though they are playing the same game.
What do you think of this one?
