Ludum Dare 56 October 4–7, 2024

I've some assets

And an idea of the view of the game. Capture d’écran du 2024-10-05 11-43-51.png

Inkscape 1.4 rc1 works perfectly good. I can't say the same for my mouse. It's time to open Vim.

Thoughts?

(It wasn't meant to resemble Kirby, I'm just a terrible artist and the best I can do is blobs)

Tiny subjects for a big King

Working hard on the theme ! Our team is currently finishing the overall concept, next is Level Design and Programming imageem2024-10-05/em115106411.png

not going as fast as I used to in LD, but still on track with high spirits!

I've ended up with one of those strange times where I've done a lot of code without anything particularly gif-able, so...

Godotemv4.3-stable/emwin64_juUk0mM2J9.png

have the tiny Godot code minimap instead! I love looking at it every time I make something in Godot, it's such a joy to see all the little shapes and colors.

Anyway, I went from "i should take a nap, but I can't stop coding" to "My brain is as dead as it can possibly be and nothing makes sense anymore" so I guess that's that for day 1 for me. 12 hours of doing more work than I have in a year, even if a lot of it was super distracted and a lot of writing in my sketchbook to sort out my thoughts on code structures. I'm having an absolute blast with this LD, and that's really something I've been missing. I was worried I'd never enjoy LD again!

Good luck and goodnight, all! :smile_cat:

(also as a minor engagement: to those who publish their games page early when the game isn't made yet, what's good y'all??? you're missing out on the boost you'll get from followers being notified that you published when the game actually exists lol)

First Ludum Dare!

My first time Ludum dare! Wanted to make art for video games all my life. Started a little late but oh well.. So excited to be part of this!

~4 hours in

This will be the story of a blob protagonist. The final boss will be a tardigrade, fought in an MMA (microbe martial arts) arena.

Happy with todays progress.

Hi Everyone, First update for today. I've been wanting to do another Ludum Dare for the last couple of years, but i keep missing them or have other things on when they are on, so this time i planned months ahead of time and of course after all that planning i get sick this weekend. We're working with a team of 2 programmers and 1 artist (myself). The theme was the 1 theme I had spent the least time thinking about, so that was a bit of an unfortunate curve ball for me. We discussed a few ideas, but ended up settling on a wave based game where you play as the tiny creature Mr Wallace the mouse fending off all sorts of creatures. So far I've spent most of today setting up the mouse model and a few additional props the player can pick up.

I've included some of the WIP shots from the art side. I started with a very basic block-out, i then moved onto the head first and built out a very basic grey box version of the mouse. I then went back over and added the details like hands and shoes after i had the main block out done. Once the general shape of the body felt right i started giving the mouse some clothes. After a bit of discussion we thought the face could be cuter, so i made a few adjustments to the face to make him look more friendly. I did the textures and set his colour to a yellowy brown, after a few revisions i settled on white looking more friendly. Hoping to get a couple more tiny creatures done tonight, then fingers crossed i can get some sleep. Looking forward to seeing everyone's entries.

Ephyra’s first float

Baby jellyfish Ephyra is ready to start exploring the ocean! After some animation assistance that is.

It’s my first time animating sprites this way. I’m working on a 12 frame animation to be ping ponged. So made a quick gif to see our progress and how it looks. Hopefully it works in the game too!

Tiny troubles ahead

Amazing how much time goes into making something very crappy and making it just a little bit (!) better

(6 hours for some art and 'only' 3 hours for all the code so far)

Developing for the Quest, on the Quest.

First day of work on my Ludum Dare compo entry is done! It's not a game yet, but it's running and building just fine. Editing and working entirely in VR for hours like this is a fascinating experience.

Very impressive of the Quest 3 to be able to keep up with this. It's 256 individual physics objects, each are about 5k tris. Terribly optimized, with each one having ~4-5 draw calls. Only a few dropped frames when the largest section of the crowd is in view!

Oops... those creatures are not so tiny

This is my second jam, and the first one I am doing solo. I don't have the full weekend this time, have to wrap up on Sunday afternoon, so my goal is to make something simple and not to overshoot with the scope. I think I am on the right path, just need to make those creatures a bit smaller :)

Larva dungeon crawler (pun intended?) in a tree

Living in UTC +2 I went to bed after having read the jam theme. When I woke up I got this idea of making a Snake game where you move between apples in a tree, and if you miss you fall to your death. :snake: :apple: :deciduous_tree:

My main approach for this LD though is to have a clear goal in the game. I thought that just eating apples and getting longer felt uninspiring, so the idea evolved into a dungeon crawler. You would start in an egg, move about as a teensy larva, get bigger and more agile, form a pupa and then finally becoming a butterly or something similarly beautiful! :sparkles: I've always been drawn to dungeon crawlers so hopefully I can create something that at least feels like one.

So far using Godot 4 and Gimp. Aiming to make something pretty in Procreate. :paintbrush:

I haven't worked much with terrain and polygons in Godot, so this is good exercise.

Putting ideas on paper usually helps.

Brainstorm completed

We just had a fun brainstorming session for LD56! Check out some of our quick sketches and ideas for games about tiny creatures.
