In Real Madrid's last game, a disappointing 3-2 home defeat to Villarreal on Saturday, the biggest story emerged after the match.
Federico Valverde is alleged to have assaulted Villarreal winger Alex Baena as the player was returning to the team coach.
Villarreal announced on Sunday the alleged attack had been reported to the police.
The Athletic has been told by sources, who wish to remain anonymous to protect their relationships, that the pair’s feud dates back to a meeting between the teams in January in the Copa del Rey when Baena directed a personal insult at Valverde.
