Graviteer (3 Different Game Modes)

I’m really happy with what I accomplished in my first Ludum Dare ever. And the game (Graviteer) got submitted with four minutes to go. 😀

I didn’t have enough time to tweak the Assualt mode, so it’s probably very hard and rough around the edges. But still, I aimed high (three different game modes, based on the theme, with three levels each) and I got very far, so I’m very pleased, to say the least. :)

I hope you enjoy the game as much as I enjoyed making it. :)

Almost Done! Still Need a Title Though

With 16 hours left on the clock, it’s time to turn in for the night and wrap everything up in the morning! The Ludum Dare has been an awesome experience, and it’s taught me quite a bit about game development as well:

  • Given a deadline, I can finish a game.
  • All-nighters are great, but only if you don’t have anything important the next day. Elliot (my partner) and I made the mistake of not sleeping between Friday and Saturday, and lost a bunch of productivity.
  • Preparation is key! Making the game isn’t hard at all once you make sure you know what you’re going to be working with. It’s learning to master the tools that’s the hard part.
  • Going cross-browser sucks. I spent 3 hours today just figuring out how to distribute on Macs (thank goodness I already knew what to do for windows, or I would kill myself).
  • Making art is fun! Given the right image creation programs (in my case, flash), it’s actually really fun to create something artistic for a game. Hence the showing off my art at the top of this post, I don’t consider myself arts-y so it’s kind of a big deal.

Back to the game though, it’s gonna be good. Elliot and I have been doing nothing but this for the last 52 hours and we’re still not sick of it yet, so we must be doing something right!

HELP: Is my game eligible for compo?

One of the comments says that it is not because of that graphics are not made by me, but are free to use…

So I can participate in the Compo or should I participate in the Jam?

My game: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-27/?action=preview&uid=27429

Thanks.

It has to be the Jam I’m afraid

Since especially graphics is an important part and one of the things that differentiates the Compo and Jam, I would say that this would be a Jam entry. You can see that there are some excemptions that are specifically stated for the compo, but graphics is not one of them.

LD 27 – Review

So I post it now cause I was wasted yesterday after those 30 hour of programming !

Here is my LD27 Entry : Test Chamber

It was my second LD 48 , and i really improved a lot in my knowledge of SLICK2D. I’m really impressed of the difference between my LD 26 and my LD 27 game.

I felt like the theme was great, I had multiple ideas right away , but the 48h restrictions hit me hard.

This time, i used multiple map, home made graphics ( even tough i’m really BAD at it ), better collision engine ( but not perfect ), included powerup / weapong / lever.

The good

– Better understanding in SLICK2D. ( But i will probably move on to another one, libgdx )

– Good planning ( but I was a little short )

– Level Design . I enjoyed making those maps so much !

The bad

– 48 hours is hard for me . I slept around 8 hours, watched some streams for 4-5 hours, barely ate but i was short in time ( I only made 10 maps, i wanted 20 ).

– Not enought Debug ( but i think it’s kind of ok ). But it’s not cool to find a bug a 1 am when the LD stops at 3.

– Graphics . It’s better than last time, but god i’m slow and not good at it … Lots of improvment to do here.

Overall

I’m pretty happy with my game. It’s something i’ll be proud to show to someone. This weekend was exhausting, but F*ck it,  it was worth it.

So if you wanna try it , here is my game : Test Chamber

Enjoy & a big thank you to LudumDare once again!

How far can you push a typo?

Players of my game all have a problem that “The mouse sensetivity is too high”. I can turn it lower with a single variable change. Can I still do it in the compo rules?

Really need to know , Thanks in advance.

Yes, I think changes made to do a better user experience are allowed, as far as they aren’t too big.

Simple, small fixes to make your game playable are alright, however adding/removing features or anything that changes the shape of the game is not.

Introducing: Time Ghost

screen1

IT’S ALIVE!!!
What an amazing weekend; It was hard but I’m proud to present you my first LD entry, Time Ghost (not a good name, but time was running out :P), a puzzle game with, well, time and ghosts 😀

I wish I had more time to add a couple more mechanics in it, because I couldn’t made any more levels with just these, but hey, 48 hours

I’d like to thank all the people in #ludumdare for the moral support and for the company, I hope you enjoy the game, if you are stuck fee free to contact me, and please rate it :)

This was my first Ludum Dare competition.

The game is written in C++11, using only SFML2.1 and JsonCpp as external dependencies.
It is written using my personal SSV framework, written from scratch, which is free, open-source and available on GitHub.

I couldn’t manage to polish the game as much as I wanted to. There only are 7 playable levels, no gfx options, no key rebinding, et cetera.

Still, being my first Ludum Dare, it was a very interesting and learning experience and I’m glad (and surprised) I managed to create something (in my opinion) worth playing that could become a fun little game with additional polish.

Hope you enjoy my entry.

How to comment after rating?

I’d like to ask for some help about comments.

I already rated 2 games, and I also added my ratings to comments to epxlain my opinion. Am I doing right? Or I shouldn’t do it? Since every other comments I saw avoids telling the actual ratings.

There’s no rules, do what you want to do!

Just rate and comment how much you can. Don’t worry about style as long as you’re being sincere.

Seems that I wasn’t obvious. My mistake!

Well, actually I was finished 9 or so hours ago, but then it was 2am and I had to go sleep! About 5pm yesterday I was really flagging on the game, it wasn’t fun, anyway since then I got some audio in and gave the game bit of a difficulty curve and it brought it together.

In the end I really did leave it to the line and the result is that this entry is not as polished as I like, I know of a fair few bugs.

I’ll post a full postmortem later on in the week when I’ve properly digested the weekend, for now give it a go and tell me what you think!

Android Games?

So, I’m away from my PC, but would really like to play some games, so post your android games here!

P.s. Dear LD please make it so that entries can be tagged and browsed by tag so that we can easily find things like android games!

Just look for phone screen sized screenshots in the “View All Results” section. 😉

Total Spaghettification!

I am exhausted, I have a headache, but I managed to get my game in on time (woo). It is called Total Spaghettification and it’s about running, jumping, sliding and wall-grinding across a spaceship before it’s pulled in to a black hole.

http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-27/?action=preview&uid=20697

Each level has a time limit. You have two controls: jump and slide. No time for direction control when you’re running for your life!

The game is a love letter to Nikujin, an awesome game about clearing tricky levels, then doing it with finesse, then speed running the game! I wanted to capture the feeling of learning-to-mastery, hence the leaderboards and ever-present timer :)

Everything I learned doing the last Ludum Dare was poured in to this game, and I learned a lot from doing this too… mostly about pixel art! Post-mortem to follow… in the meantime, do me a tweet @unusualcadence if you like/hate/find a bug with the game!

(PS I think the difficulty of this game is ‘do-a-swear hard’. Sorry for any contributions to swear-jars around the world)

E.B.D.S – Honest and actually accurate postmortem

I finished my game. It’s called EBDS.

Here is a picture. People like pictures.

This is a post-mortem. I like post-mortems.

What went right :

I finished it.

What went wrong :

It’s not perfect.

On an unrelated note, here is the Wikimedia Creative Commons 0 picture of a squid. I like squids.

I’m back to say I applaud this game.

Over night

Well.. I’m not really happy with my entry this time. I loved the theme and was really excited about it, but didn’t do my best at all..

Here is what I made:

There is a lot of problems. It’s almost not playable.. but I learned A LOT doing it..

The original idea was much bigger: main character should have ability to travel in time and space to get to the places where some disaster happens and have only 10 seconds to prevent this disaster. Gameplay mechanics was inspired by Hotline Miami.. but I didn’t get even close to it…

Again.. I learned a lot. I will make games much better than this in the future.

To the Ludum Dare Jammers: Rock on!

To the Lone Wolves and Bands of Brothers working in that final day before the Jam deadine:

Kick some ass! Give us all some really awesome games to play, I’m looking forward to see what all of you are making!

Now stop reading the blogs and get back to work! :)

My ludum dare entry : 10 seconds to save the day

10 seconds to save the day is an adventure game where you play as a ghost.

You died in a terrible accident that made dozens of victims. You remember that for 10 seconds, you knew you were going to die… In the clouds, such moments are called “extra time”.
There’s a rule that if you have unfinished business on Earth you can give this “extra time” to another person. But who to give it to and can 10 seconds be enough to prevent the accident ?

10 seconds to save the day

Here’s the link :
Entry page of 10 seconds to save the day

I hope you enjoy the game !
I’ll probably write a post-mortem in the next few days. Meanwhile, it’s time to play some games :)
