LD29 April 25–28, 2014

I’m in — Ludum Dare 29

Jeez, I haven’t been able to do a Ludum Dare game in a whole year. That changes now, though! Because I’m most certainly in this time.

Tools:

  • Unity Engine, or Python and PySDL2, depending on how I’m feeling at the time of the theme announcement.
  • Blender, Photoshop, Aseprite as needed for graphical assets
  • Sunvox, Bfxr, Audacity, for sound needs

Last time, I did an SFML and C++ solution for a one button tower platformer. SFML is messy and icky and I will not use it again. So if I choose not to go down the Unity route with something 3D, I will make it in SDL2 directly, because I love the SDL API and I have been itching to do some serious Python code after I spent a few weeks toying with it.

I have also been spending a lot of time learning Sunvox and Blender, the former in particular, and can now produce some programmer-level assets in all fields of the game’s development. Which means not only programmer art, but programmer sound and music too. Is this a good or a bad thing? I am not sure.

While I’m on it, Unity’s 2D support in 4.3 is bad for a few different reasons, so if you’re planning on doing 2D in Unity, I’m going to advise you to stay away from it unless you have a hand made physics solution (something that just uses box colliders would be ideal) and a reasonably well optimized tile map system. Neither of which are difficult to implement on the spot, but it’s a pain in the butt that Unity’s own support for physics is bad and there’s no editing grid let alone tile mapping at all.

I’m in for the second time \o/

After doing better than expected during LD28, I hope to place even better this time.

I will most likely use phaser.io as my framework, GrafX2 and Gimp for all the pixel “art” I’ll have to make and sfxr and llms for sound and music. Depending on the theme I might deviate from that a bit though.

I hope it will be as much fun as last time!

Update, strike that. I’ll be using löve2d 0.8.0 (why not 0.9.1 you ask? Because the new versions are not yet available on most Linux distribution’s vanilla stable versions. Sad but true.) and probably parts of the following lua libraries:

  • https://github.com/rnlf/lust (my own collection of tools and some higher level stuff)
  • https://github.com/rxi/lume (rxi’s great tool collection)
  • https://github.com/rxi/flux (rxi’s equally great tweening library)

For graphics, I’ll probably switch to Gimp after all.

Less than a day until LD29. Excited \o/

Need a topic!

Hey guys! I need to practise for my first Ludum Dare. Could some of you guys give me a topic to make a practise game this week end?

Here are five suggestions, all given by the Ludum Dare Slaughter:

Warmup 29 – Double Dusk

So, I intend to do a little interactive fiction with Construct 2, using arrays.

I red recently some Dashiell Hammett novellas, played LA Noire and had watched Chinatown for the 5th time, so I’ll write a small hard-boiled/crime story crime story, in the 1920s 1930/1950s Chicago (cf. old maps of Chicago). And, why not using some old jazz music found on archive.org (1920s/1940s music, so probably public domain/CCO, right?)…

No graphics, just a nice titlescreen (like these old awesome movies titlescreen from ansas), and (of course) an (corny) old movie look.

I’ll probably spend more than few hours on this game (… I already work on the title screen mockup underneath for hours XD) writing all the story so it’s not really a warmup… it’s more a personal challenge: English is not my natural language, so I’m forcing myself to write a lot of stuff. And of course, you’ll see some horrible mistake/misspells!

2nd Ludum Dare

As the title suggests, this is going to be my 2nd Ludum Dare, and I can’t wait for it! This time I am going to be working with a few friends. I may or may not stream on Twitch, if not I will create  a time-lapse video of my progress.

Tools we’ll be using is:

Framework: Unity (most likely using the 2D part of it)

IDE: Visual Studio 2013 Pro for C# coding.

Graphics: Paint.net

Sound: Logic pro 9, and Bxfr

Good luck everyone! :D

Proposal

So you know how there have been unofficial, secondary themes in previous jams, like Potato and Kittens? I propose that we should implement Pepsi Consultant into our games somehow, just for fun.

Hopefully have time this.. time

Hi All,

I forgot my GoTeamBob password, so decided to make a new account under this name, last year I entered my game ‘You only get 1 banana’.

I’m hoping ill actually get time this year to do this, ill probably just make a game with a friend.

The tools ill be using are:

FlashDevelop – Flixel

Sounds – SXFR

Graphics – Paint.NET

Music – Otomata

I’ll probably go down to Cambridge and see if anything is going on at the usual CB2Indies meet on Saturday.

Lee.

Hopefully a better theme this time around…

If I remember correctly this is how you enter Ludum Dare! So let’s do it!

TOOLS:

  • ENGINE: Unity3D
  • LANGUAGE: JavaScript
  • IDE TYPE THINGY MAJIG (NOT SURE IF ACCURATE BUT WILL GO WITH IT): MonoDevelop
  • GRAPHICS: Blender (3D stuff (If a 3D game (Yes brackets in brackets))), Paint.NET (Textures/Sprites)
  • SOUNDS: SFXR

Also, this is my second LD so I am like totally a veteran now.

– Morgan Brown.

Rooting for another good theme – I’m In

Hopefully there should be another good theme this time round, hopefully inspiring to make something really different.

This time round I’ll be also making this game a full one after the compo, It’ll most likely be an android game…

Weapons of Choice:

  • Engine: Unity3D Free.
  • Language: C#.
  • Coding IDE: MonoDevelop.
  • Graphics and Modeling: Blender, Photoshop CS6, Inkscape, AutoTileGen.
  • Audio: FL Studio 11, NI Massive, Bfxr.

This will be my 3rd LD on the trot. so I’m pretty happy that I can keep on with these.

Also Good Luck everyone!

Lets do this!!!

Engine: None, I am writing boilerplate at the time.

Language: Java, as its the only one I can make games with.

IDE:  Eclipse or Netbeans (probably eclipse, because its better but netbeans just looks so good on mac!)

Graphics: GIMP.

Audio: SFXR.

Me: 13 year old game dev, pretty crap at it, but doing Ludum Dare to test my skill. I’m probably one of the youngest, so i’ll probably fail.

I might give it a shot and I’m 12 😀

Stencyl?

I am going to use Stencyl for my game, is it ok? I won’t be able to provide source code.

You must provide the source code for the compo rules.

However you can use the jam rules.
19. Apr 2014 · 12:19 UTC
All you have to do is provide the file(s) that Stencyl saves when you save your game project.

Yes, Stencyl can export your game into a single “.stencyl” file which contains everything required. Just use the Export Game option and you’ll be fine.

Slumber

Warmup weekend concept art. Going where the pixels take me!

treadlightly

Now to make a game around it. q_q;;

Hoping to have some fun next weekend! Using Java, LibGDX and artemis-odb, Tiled and Audacity. Prepping a little library too!

In once again.

Obligatory “I’m in” post.

Last time was fun, though due to internet issues I was unable to play peoples’ games, which was a pity. This time round I should have no such issues! Can’t wait to see what we get for a theme.

I’m in Lundum Dare! :D

This is my first ludum dare and I can’t wait to start making games!

Engine/Language: GameMaker Studio

Sound effects: SFXR

Graphics: Gimp 2

I don’t know how to make sound track for my game

if you know a free software that I can make music easy please tell me :)

Famitracker is fairly easy to pick up music maker. The benefit being anything you make with it will sound pretty consistent with sfxr. Also it’s free.

Take a look at the “TOOLS” page, it has some sound programs.

Doing great on my Ludum Dare Engine!

See the engine here: Ludum Dare 29 Engine

This engine is written in Java and so far has many of the main components required to make a game. The engine is open-source with a GPL v2 license, you amy use it for any purposes you desire. Enjoy!

Second LD48

Last LD I participated in was LD27 and I didn’t get to upload due to internet issues, should be fine this time.

Most likely doing an IF game based on the theme in Python so here we go…

Language/Engine: Python 2.7.6
Storyboarding and things: Twine 1.4.2
Compiling: py2exe

can’t waint for my second LD, woo \o/

Gotta catch em’ all

I’m a 3rd-year software engineering student with a passion for video games. I’ve been playing games all the time since I could hold a controller in my hands and I’ve been making small games for the past couple years. I’m looking to soon dive into a bigger project, outside of school.

This’ll be my first Ludum Dare :)

Tools: Unity (2D), C#, MonoDevelop, GIMP, Bfxr.

Good luck to everyone! I can’t wait to see what other people will make.

I’m (maybe In

So I’ve never joined before, but I’ve been following ludum dare for a while, and I think I might be ready to actually make something this time. I’m not sure if I’ll be busy during the compo so I can’t confirm I’ll be in, but I’d really like to…

If I do join, this is likely what I will be using:

Language: haXe

Framework: haxeflixel + some component and gameobject management code originally intended for my own engine (I’ll post it before the compo)

(I wish I could be using my own engine, but I’ve run into serious performance troubles, and collision glitches, hopefully someday I’ll be able to come back to it and fix it up, but I’m not ready for that yet)

Editor: flashdevelop

Graphics: Gimp or Aseprite

Sound: probably bfxr

4th time it is

So, it seems like this is going to be my 4th Ludum Dare (4th compo too). This time I’ll (once again) be using:

HTML5/JavaScript and pentagine.js;
GIMP for graphics;
Emacs <3 for coding;
sfxr for audio effects;

I hope it will be another awesome Ludum Dare with amazing entries from all over the world!
