Cat’s Heaven post-Mortem

head

So let’s talk about my secound Ludumdare. As the last time it was a lot of fun ! And it’s always magic to work with Phaser. BTW Richard Davey (creator of phaser) Posts a link to my game in the phaser website ! And he seems to like it ^^’. Link to the article.

This weekend, I had to work alone, not with my team. So it’s was harder, especially with the graphics that I usually not do.

What went good :

  • Good game mechanics.
  • I stick with the theme
  • I didn’t die to an overdose of coffee like last time ^^’

What went bad :

  • I was supose to dev the game in a team but I had to do it alone
  • The game can make you dizzy beaucause of the art
  • Some function in the code are juste ugly ! Realy ! Don’t look at it please !

I like the game that a produce so I’ll update it ! Make better art, more feedback for the player, maybe some animation ! I’m motivate ! So follow the game on Game Jolt !

This Ludumdare was magic and you will see my for the Ludumdare#33. The main => a multiplayer game !

My first Ludum Dare and what went well

My first Ludum Dare was a great experience and although I got a little side tracked on day 2 I ended up completing my game with just over half an hour remaining for the competition.

The LD Compo started Saturday at 1pm for me in New Zealand and finish Monday at the same time of course…

SO what is the most unconventional weapon? Obviously something that can easily kill you as much as it kills the enemies! And that was my initial thought, GIANT SPIKY BALL OF DEATH!

GSBOD

Play and rate here

What I wanted to add:

– Title screen (sorta did that)

– Game over screen (Check)

– Main mechanic (Duh!)

– Variation of enemies (Check)

– Some sort of score system (Did a timer)

– Tweet high score (Chose not to in the end)

– Difficulty curve (I sure hope so, spent a long time trying to make it work!)

– Music and sound effects (Sound effects im happy, but the music is average)

What went well?

– Have you see the list? I kept it simple

– I planned EVERYTHING then TRIED to made a simple attempt on the first night

– I talked with friends and got some other people online to test my game

– I planned to end 3 hours early, this is a big one as I ended up going about 2 and a half hours over the time I aimed for!

So I think my first Ludum Dare went very well, and i am proud of what I produced in a short amount of time and had one hell of a good time!

Move Them post morten

Two day ago I submitted my compo under the name “Move Them”, it was my first game ever.

What went wrong:

  • I didn’t know how to use most of my tools,
  • lake of experiences lost me a lot of time,
  • I was too tired Sunday night to correctly use the last three hours.

What went right:

  • I did a functional game
  • I found a way to port it to windows \o/

Tools used:

Next time, I have to use less time for learning my tools, less time for coding, and more for gameplay, sound and graphics.

Thank to Shiro Games for hosting me for the duration of the compo.

Post-LD Stress Disorder? Nope, just Tom-Catch

This Ludum Dare event has arrived to it’s end. I must say I can’t feel the post-Ludum Dare stress disorder, that I had last time. :)
We “finished” our game in a so relaxed way so I couldn’t be happy with that. Just uploaded the final build and grabbed a beer at 4:30 AM. I was so tired I couldn’t even think about what we did in the weekend.

But yeah, we made a simple game. Our take on the theme was to build the story around the concept of an unconventional weapon. This weapon is a giant robot dog that can finally terminate the war between the cats and mice. Obviously you can’t make a really big story in 3 days, so don’t expect too much of Tom-Catch. :) It’s a shame because I really like story driven games.

Tom-Catch Logo

The logo of the game in fact is a dog. Some people who’ve seen it thought that its a pussy-tom-cat. 😛 No, it isn’t.

The protagonist is Felician Squeakypants, who’s a dead serious bad-ass agent. Professor Quincy asks him to deliver some blueprints of a secret weapon. Unfortunately these blueprints got stolen by Orlando Whiskey, a bad-ass Cat agent. Now Felician has to chase him, and take back a papers.

Tom-Catch

As you can see there are many art styles of sprites in this game. It’s because all of us wanted contribute to the graphics. Which is good. I don’t think that I could do all that stuff myself only. We planned more features and nicer cutscenes, but there wasn’t enough time for that. You must think in small on LD. We can never think small. Don’t know why. :)
But fortunately we managed to make a complete game, even if it’s limited in features.

I would like to ask you to try it our.

It’s nice that it is a complete game, I like the retro feel of it, the cutscenes and enemies dying animation, First laughed at how easy it was, then died because running out of lives XD. I assume the logo (dog) might also be the boss! but I died before finding out,

😛 and yeah, my legs felt too sore to walk the whole road for a second time.

Hey, guys. Seriously… This game is like some kind of twisted 80’s tv show for children. I really like it!

The morning type

HELLO! 😀

I made a video game too! It’s educational! 😀

And it only takes about 2 minutes to play a round. I think I managed to include a few pretty cool little things, so it should be worth a play 😀

It's an anvil!

Play The morning type here! 😀

It’s over – time for resting…

Hi there,

it was a very exhausting weekend for us and we lost absolutely too much time debugging our game in order to fix bugs.
Therefore we didn’t manage to add as much content as we planned on the first day.

Nevertheless we managed to “finish” our game and submitted it a few hours ago in the jam.

This time we wanted to learn new things. and used for the first time HTML5 and JavaScript.

But back to our game:

We made up a tiny little game called “Luigi – Mastering Energy“.
You are Luigi and your task is to reach the next dimension trough an gate.
Therefore you have to use your “unconventional weapon” ENERGY to activate elements in the right order.

Teaser

You have an battery pack attached, which has a certain amount of energy to activate elements.

This energy also represents you health, so be careful. On you way trough the dimension your environment changes. Everything speeds up and costs more energy. So don’t get destroyed too often and try to reach an high level.

In all we used XHTML, JavaScript with EaselJS, GIMP, BFXR & BoscaCeoil to create our game.

We’ll hope you enjoy our game and see you on next LD in august!

PHARBA!

We’ve completed our first ever game jam!

We’ve made a game, where your only weapon is a paint bucket. We’ve called it “PHARBA”, which means “paint” in Ukrainian :)
It’s a local versus multiplayer game, that supports 2-4 players. Every player controls an invisible man, who carries a bucket.

Your goal is to paint the world and your opponents before they do the same to you :) Let’s the splatness begin!

Make art & colors! Play & rate it!

BARELY SUBMITTED IN TIME!!! Amass Assault (more like amass stress, fun, euphoria and all nighters!)

Hey guys! This is my first game jam (my team mates have entered before), and oh man was it fun! So many hours sitting my bum on a chair and drawing (I’m the artist in the team) and never did I think my hips could hurt more but I’m so glad we got this submitted!! http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=53191

Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to complete it properly so this is a demo, however we endeavor to have it look more like this in the near future

You can follow our progress on this project by liking our Facebook page here: http://www.facebook.com/StudiousGames

There will be plenty more to look forward to, including collectibles, more compact level design, traps, enemies etc in the next version and it will continue to grow from there. Our team consists of only 1 artist, 1 developer and 2 composers, so with more time we can make this game beautiful, with your support.

Thanks for reading! :) Good luck everyone, and congrats on making it through the long nights! 😀

“A nice Day in the Park”

So for this jam I wanted to use the motion capture system Perception Neuron. Because I work at the company who developed the system it was my goal to see how well it worked for recording animations and what I could get done in 48 hours. The rules I set upon myself turned about to make the jam a lot more difficult once the theme was announced. I spent a good amount of time trying to pair game ideas with motion-capture, the time and resources I had available.

The idea of having a recorded motion and then disabling the animation to turn the character into a ragdoll turned out to be really easy. Unity’s animation controller is pretty straight forward with this as you can use one invisible character with the recorded motion and then use another rigged model as the visual component driven by the animation controller. When you turn off the animator component the ragdoll becomes active. I was surprised how well this worked. This allowed me to use the recorded motion without any data cleanup or anything else in Unity. Simply exported as an FBX file from the tracking software and imported into Unity.

The resulting game concept from that was pretty straight forward. Prevent dude A from reaching point B by dropping stuff on his head.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.

My Game, Daifugo

It was definitely a wild ride, enjoyable too!

Daifugo, its a game that I’ll be continuing to work on. So many things cut near the end but It’ll be improved upon tremendously in the coming days. Here’s to a first and not last Ludum Dare

Gangster Block Manager – Submitted

Hello guys! this is my first Ludum Dare,  I had a lot of fun creating this game called Gangster Block Manager. In this game you are a gangsta (from the block) controlling a bar with your Fellas.

You have to resist, pay wages, pay taxes and complete your mission. A double economy will help you to expand your control on the block!

Here is my entry :  http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=51739

I hope you will have fun playing Gangster Block Manager (Web) or Gangster Block Manager (Win)

Check out my game crash bomb. :)

HERE

Crash Bomb is a game about using clones of your original bomb to blow your enemies to bits, and hopefully not yourself in the process. By shoot clones, they bounce around until they hit tnt or an enemy. The levels are filled with TNT though, some of which the enemies place down, so avoid them, or your explosions may end up killing the original!

Just saying, some of your games have been incredible, well done everyone. :)

Hi, everyone.

I didn’t participated this Ludum Dare because didn’t feel enough confident, fresh and motivated to complete it, but want to share my idea, cause maybe someone would find it interesting or helpful for himself.

It’s side view. Platform is tablet or other mobile device, controls is your finger (but should work on PC with mouse pointer). You’ve got some kind of tribe village in the left of the screen and invader army forces coming from the right. Being some kind of shaman, you could use forces of nature to defend your village. You could make a wind by swiping in air, or even initiate a tornado with coil gesture. You could hold or merge clouds to make them storm ones and then swiping it down release lightnings and heavy rain. By holding and shaking ground you make an earthquake, and grabbing missiles you could turn and throw them back to enemy.

New links :)

My entry is now everywhere.
And by everywhere I mean GameJolt, Newgrounds and itch.io 😀

Straw poll: your OS & how you’re playing

I’ve been super disappointed that I’ve hit game after game that only has a solitary Windows build, as I’m running OSX. Alternating between Chrome and safari as needed (webgl runs like poo on safari it seems, but I like that tabbing away from a unity web player game puts it to sleep or something, the music goes off).

Then I read Unity’s own stats puts Windows web players at 98%. Dayum.

But then I realized that specifically among game devs, especially in #LDJAM, that number might not be so high, so I thought I’d ask here.

  • Which OS/browser are you running primarily?
  • Are you having any trouble playing this crop of games?

I’m playing on a Windows PC but trying the Web version for any game that has it (and some games I’ve seen only had a web version). Running Chrome, opening Firefox for games that used Unity Web Player.

Mostly not having trouble playing games.
