LD19 December 17–20, 2010

Engine

Decided to go for the top down game.

The game now has playable stuff.
null
The player (currently identified by a blue square) can move around and place dynamite (yellow square) to blow up walls (white squares). The exploding isn’t pictured, but all you’re missing out on is a red square and disappearing white blocks.

Next is to add the ability to die, and possibly some fancier graphics.

Game design plan:Espial

You play the role of Espial, a blob of a newly discovered element who escapes containment. He then explores the world. The game will be in 2D, but it will be possible to switch point of view and move in 3D anyways.

You will control the blob by clicking on the map, and he will follow your points.

There will be a story mode, a randomly generated world and a world editor.

Some objects will be possible to interact with.

player

Here is the first model of the player.

This is a little ambitious, but I’d rather aim high and make sacrifices than aim low and miss out on stuff.

Sat, 5 AM, 2/48 passed

I’m planning to make a screenshot every 2-4 hours, which should result in 10-20 screenshots (at least if I’ll get some sleep over the next 48h). Some history:

Actually, Scarab of Ra was one of the first games I played, on a Macintosh SE/30 under the Apple System 7 OS.

So I’m going for a simplified combination of these two games.

Amazing Labyrinth:

Scarab or Ra (now that’s a cool monkey):

Wow, Scarab of Ra is bringing the memories flooding back. My brothers and I used to play that on our Macintosh Portables!

First compo, first idea, first screenshot

Hello mates !

To tell the truth I don’t like this theme. Also, this is my first attempt to any game making’s jam. I hope I’ll find a way to make my game :)

I have plenty of food, coke and coffee. So I’m ready. Here’s my idea :

I’m taking the word ‘Discovery’ as what happen when you Explore & Stuff. So it will be a Space RTS gameplay where at start you control a “home world planet” bound to a sun with (fake) gravity – I sucks at physics things. On the journey, you’ll have fight in space battles against (scary?) aliens. Your goal is to expand, control the solar system(s) and eliminate all the aliens…

Rotating planets :

By the way, the game is in Python2.6, using pygame (SDL) and pycairo (Cairo) library. Currently on GNU/Linux, I hope Windows version will be fine.

Nice choice of idea and tech. Looking forward to see what it ends up as!

Two hours and twenty minutes later…

… and I finally have a font (the twenty minutes was due to me having to make a puts function).

lols

Next task: Actually make a GAME. (After I’ve made a tileset and a spriteset, of course. Perhaps with a slightly more suitable palette.)

Bit More Stuff

Just finished off some epic lasagna @ 4am (UK Time) and came up with something interesting I’m going to try.

To make life that much harder for myself I’m going to combine elements of board games to my console based game.

I’ve seen a lot of good ideas floating about and some people have some serious talent and dedication…here’s hoping my attempt doesn’t go way off course

Game title – Chaotic Spread

I’ve decided to post the idea of the game for the Compo here before I chicken out of it.

I’ll throw all caution to the air with my first entry here, and start with a persistent world, online, multiplayer space exploration game! Also, I’m going to do the coding for a Jam entry, but as I won’t do much more than write the code, I can’t say I’m making 2 games this weekend :-)

I’ll be using this to start with:

Client side:

  • Flash CS5
  • SFXR
  • musagi

Server side:

  • PHP
  • MySQL
  • Apache

And now a question: Do you guys mind if I hold the source code for the sever side until the judging is done? With only < 48h to do it, I’m afraid someone will easily take the server down or wipe the database, even without the source. If I let them see what it’s running in there, it’s pretty much assured something bad is going to happen. So what do you guys think?

If you are in the JAM, you do not need to share your source code.

Now of course it requires some tweaking so that my game world does not end up being Waterworld, or Dune, but there you go. Oceans, plains and mountains.

Note that it wraps around in both directions, so my world is a torus. And there is of course lots of parameters that can be changed. (Understand: I’m going to play with the parameters for a few hours, and then discard them anyway.)

And so I’m back

with my ridiculous game ideas! 😉

Anyway, this ludum dare, I will be participating in the actual compo. Crazy, isn’t it? I’m going to be working on getting MVC, time-based game loops, and good coding practice this time.

Since the theme is discovery, a giant wave of creative ideas came in my head. It all came down to this:

There is a scientist who creates a robot as his explorer basically. And he gets sent to Earth to search for signs of previous life (this is post-nuclear Earth btw, just because…) You then explore caves and find stuff. For example a cell phone would give the message “you found some sort of communication device!” etc.

Here is my sprite for the robot. (coloring will be put in when I after I make the walking animation):

Please tell me what you think in a comment. :)

Sounds cool so far. The robot is indeed cute :)

Looks a tiny bit like a skeleton as well.

Hmm.. wonder what a robo-skeleton would look like?

Good coding practice!?

Title: Compact Discovery

My idea is probably one you will be seeing a lot of: Roaming around in space, visiting planets.

I also want to add side scrolling level within the levels themselves for extra “Discovery”.

Also, as the title suggests, the planets are Compact Discs/CDs so I can have a little fun with that concept.

Right now I have basic overworld movement and collision with planets being detected – woot!

With the first 3 hours coming to an end

I’ve got an idea on the game I’m going to do, and started some primitive coding. If you don’t want to read a block of text, heres some quick bullets.

  • It’s in space, you own a space ship
  • Your foraging ahead into space over planets, the idea is that you defeat any threats around the planet, then you can “Explore” the planet, possibly discover somethings, new parts, more enemies, who knows.
  • Top down when your shooting enemies down, only able to move left or right, don’t let the enemies touch you.
  • You must kill all the enemies to make it through to the planet.
  • More planets will be unlocked as you gain more tech, or something to that effect.

I’m to tried to type about this anymore. I slapped together a crappy looking website before the dare, I’ll start posting things on there tomorrow afternoonish, I’ll hold out on giving the URL, still not working quite right. Well I’m off to bed, see everyone in the morning.

Idea formed up

I initially wanted to do something with JS and canvas, but I had an idea of a little game I wanted to do a long time ago which fits nicely this theme, but sadly, can’t be done in JS yet. So I’ll be using my ole C# and SFML2. Sadly though, I’ll only be able to put around 8 hours or so in it the compo this weekend. All I did tonight was try out the basic feature of my idea to see if it would work.  Here’s a mock-up, try and figure out what it’ll be:

JS can do a lot more than you think already….it just depends which beta browser used by a minority of people you’re limiting the final product to 😛

Livestream! Breakfast! Sleep?

Alright, for those that want to see somebody struggling with discovering game-making in 48 hours live (see what I did there?) – You can check out http://www.justin.tv/mirroar

Also, I just got up after about 3 hours of sleep, and I’ll be deciding on what game to make while eating breakfast!

Breakfast

Yum!

Timelapse is running and I’m looking forward to some nice games!

First screen (OMG)

It compiles.

Your pixels are delicious.

Some Astronaut Graphics

I don’t know what kind of game I’m going to try to make, but I just spent some time in Blender making an astronaut on Mars.  This is not actual in-game graphics, but a Blender render.  The actual Unity game will look a little different.

I’ve started my LD19 entry: Introspect!

And this time, dammit, I will have an opening title.

I’ve got some sketches of the weird main character. Let’s meet him/her now!

My design idea is discovery of both gameplay, and both of yourself (as the game character).  I’m starting out with something alien and unusual looking, so you don’t have any preconceptions of the story or what is to come.

I like the look of this creature. Tough, powerful… but also kinda loveable.

Lots of personality. Keep up the amazing work.

Take a rest

After some hours of work… I want to rest, got to work the game later.

Anyway, here’s what my game for Ludum Dare 19 looks like:

1st song Completed

Got my Song created. Now working on sound effects!

Sorry for being short but we are in the middle of the compo.
