LD19 December 17–20, 2010

Night of the Muglies 1.1

Updated my entry in-place with version 1.1. Changes:

  • Tuned gameplay a bit
  • Three modes: quick, normal and zen
  • Quick is pretty much the same as the 1.0 version was
  • Music bits don’t trigger quite as often anymore

This one’s final. I think.

Breakfast of the Monkey

Breakfast of the Monkey

Didn't have any bananas, sorry.

  • +10 stamina
  • +5 willpower

Code Monkey Set

  • (5-Piece Bonus): Look extremely nerdy

OK I’ll stop now. Have an alien voice sample I cooked up while I couldn’t sleep.

18 hours to go…

Yeah, srsly..

Day 2: Epilogue

And that’s it for the second day of LD #19. TIL Ludum Dare isn’t pronounced “loo-dumb deh-urr.” Anyway, I have a rudimentary map editor and a bunch of obstacles complete, and the last things to do are:

  • Set up the story progression (discovery)
  • Finish the game world!
  • Make some music

Tomorrow is a day for content generation, which will most likely be very easy to do provided my tools don’t bug out on me like they did an hour ago, forcing me to restart my computer and interrupt my timelapse! Ehm. Anyway, I’ve uploaded a new build of the game, which can be played at the usual URL. I’m gonna come up with a name and a story tomorrow. Night everyone.

This is not going all that well.

Behold a very lonely procedural world full of very empty procedural dungeons.

Oh, and hold Space to get through the emptiness faster.

Funny, holding RIGHT and UP at the same time works, but not LEFT and UP

Too true! Making a game in a group actually feels even more like this! :) Most important thing is to enjoy yourself and remain cheerful.

Especially when you forget that ludum is starting for a whole day, then find it, decide you wont do it because it’s too late and you have no ideas, and then while not thinking about it at all you suddenly have a great idea that you really want to do.

Okay… bed time for me

That it is… I think that I’ll call it quits for right now, and wait till tomorrow to finish, tho I’ll prolly only have a couple of hours left after I get done with everything that I was doing IRL that day…

Things that I have done:
Movement
Game victory/plot (not much of one, but hey, it’s there)
Dungeons
Inventory system that works
Combat
Leveling system (prolly a rather broken one, but hey)
Treasure to discover
Health/Stamina regeneration instead of health/stamina potions
A HUD

Things I have yet to do:
Graphics (least priority)
Enemies/Bosses (need at least one enemy, other than that, it’s a low priority)
Actually making the items in the inventory usable (highest priority)

All I’m using is my mind, and Game Maker 8 Lite.

Good nights, all.

HOMMage Progress and Belated Food Photos

Almost crashed without tossing a progress report up. Just came back to the PC to turn Chronolapse off, but the shame of getting a good night’s rest was too much to bear. Here’s the result of my guilt.

So we’ve got some basic movement in,  item collection, and interacting with your town (sorta). The social aspect is offically canned for now.The  AI, Combat and polish tomorrow should keep me busy enough.

I would have felt ashamed to toss up either of these as solo food photo posts, so here they are tacked on together, in all of their glory.

The greasiest of onion ringsThe greasiest of onion rings kept me going through the afternoon.

My wonderful galpal tossed together some stew, seen here with spoils we nabbed at the Bulk Barn.

So, still no “fun” in the game yet but I’m pretty happy with what I’ve got so far. What do you guys think?

Yesterday I forgot to say…

…that I have made an infinite (1.79e+616 pixels) universe.

Now just calculate how long it would take the player to get to the edge of this infinity 😀

Good morning ludum dare!!

It is already the second day, and my game is still not really a game, and I have no idea for the game, only got some features.
So here what I’m gonna eat before continue working on my game:
My second break fast
Good luck everyone!

D:

Bear with a Flashlight

First Ludum Dare I’m taking part in, going relatively smoothly despite the fact that I have to learn Pygame on the fly as I program:

By the way, that purple mess is supposed to be a bat of some sort.

Introspect: NOW WITH PLATFORMS!

Ugh.   Mouse-hand is breaking from doing all this level work.

Clicky on the image if you want to give it a try!

Warning: Some exits crash the game, because the levels they point do not yet exist!

End of Saturday Results

Pretty pleased with where I’m at. Since I was only able to start in full today I got a lot done. The RPG and Platformer bits are all working relatively good. The atmosphere is hitting exactly what I want. I’m not content complete as I’d prefer to be at this point, but I’ll just have to hustle tomorrow. There wont be as much time for polish.

The concept is about self-discovery and fighting through the various stages of needs to hit self-actualization. Working title: Super Maslow RPG.

Playable build available here: http://www.refrag.com/gamedev/LD19/bin-debug/LD19.html

Heading towards beta :-)

What I need to do:

  • Highscore
  • Titlescreen and Introduction
  • Sounds
  • Music
  • Particles
  • Background
  • Testing

Nameless Island – Progress Rewind

So Ive run into several phantom bugs with the code using Gamelab, and after 2 hours of debugging and testing I cant get any closer to success, so Im going to switch to using Game Maker for Nameless Island. Which means that I have a lot of work to do over the next 17 hours, but I reckon I can pull it off. It also simplifies some of my existing code quite a bit.

So here is what it looks like now:

Progress report

Hi all,

The demo can finally be called a game (sort of). You can take on the role of our friendly alien and explore the earth in search for the mighty elemental crests. In this case your task is to gather all of the air crests in the scenario.

Some context: Basically, our alien friend is a scientist with the task of collecting the essence of the four earthly elements in order to study them. Given the constraints of time, I am focusing on one element, and even so, I think I won’t be able to do everything I want.

I finally fixed the worst bugs (I think) on the physics side and built a mid-sized level. I would love to have time to add clouds to hide some of the crests and some adversities (giving the game some very much needed fun), to animate some of the stuff, to add sound and to implement some kind of dynamic background.

Right now, I am going for a sleeping session, much needed after a 22h run (with pauses for meals). I’ll decide my focus after that if I still have the time.

You can have a look at the demo here

While I know it is still lacking a lot, at least I learned stuff :)

Gave the demo a shot in both Chrome and Firefox, couldn’t get it working.

Big improvement

Next is to add enemies, and a way to advance!

I couldn’t resist…

Too soon?

Not soon enough, the controversy was weeks ago, that’s like 15 American news retention years.

Tick tock…

Clock is ticking.. starting to cutback features. Hopefully I’ll have a game by the end.

First Post, First Version.

I have been looking forward to this whole deal for a bit now. Glad to be taking part.  Here is the first version of my game so far. It is a real time space 4x wanabe where the only inputs are where the ships move and where the camera is. It is in java using an old version of the processing api that someone decalred earlier for rendering. First time using it and im not sure if i will use it again.

I would appreciate any and all feedback.
