Godot + Ludum Dare

TL; DR: Learning a new tool while jamming? I don't think it's a good idea any more... However, learning Godot was quite useful. :)

Let me share my experience about learning Godot while participating on Ludum Dare. Having a time constraint is frustrating by itself, but having a time constraint AND constantly bumping into minor annoyances is extra frustrating. I have been using Love2D for a long time (which is another excellent tool for LDs), but it's very different from Godot, so understanding the workflow here was a real paradigm shift for me.

I already had some experience with Godot from before (I've started porting my previous LD game, Long Distance Runner), but it looks like it was insufficient as I had to learn new concepts during the jam. Learning as in "trial and error... and cursing". :)

Once a new idea clicks though, it's a pleasure to work with Godot. Having a generic editor that helps creating tilemaps and levels, collision shapes, animations, user interface is a great plus in my opinion. I feel I can concentrate more on the content than on technical difficulties when making a game. The node system, the signals, and the "animate anything" are super powerful! Yes, there are tiny quirks here and there, but I think over time they will iron them out.

So my advice for You, and for my future self is: "On Ludum Dare, use the tools you know best."

The result of all these is a game with one level and an abrupt end:

Looking to play Oculus VR entries

I was able to find a few VR games last jam, and it was a joy to get them running on my Oculus Rift. I know it is hard to find playtesters for these games, so if you made one for this jam and are looking for feedback, or saw someone else's VR entry, let me know and I will give them a try!

Small update

As quite a lot of people mentioned it, our game suffered from a minor bug that made everything crash etc. I corrected it ! So you should be able to play it without any problem now.!

Raavblaa : Battle Report Day 3

By the gods!

And by gods I mean Raa and Bla, the tide of battle has swayed enormously in the past 24 hours. Screenshot 2018-12-05 17.14.51.png A healthy balance seemed to have been reached by mid-day yesterday, but checking in this morning things are looking dire for followers of Blaa Raavbla2.gif Raa takes the lead again with a massive 141,313 TAKEDOWN!

I hope to add a tracker in to tally the scores by the end of the voting period to determine who is consumed by the eternal hot hot very hot flames of the volcano and then absorbed by their brother in what is essentially the amniotic fluid of great mountains and continents, and by that I mean lava.

Blaa needs your lives!

Hello all creators

I am looking for games that I can play directly on the browser. After playing, I will rate all of your games. You can enter your games into comments and then you can rate my game "Bloodless"! :D

Thank you everybody for your feedback ! We are developing a post-ludum dare version of our game, Volgar.

Rating Some HTML/web games!

For those who were asking, this is our game: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/antlerman

Should I reboot?

My initial idea was to fuse "Right Click to Necromance" (which was also created during a jam! https://juicybeast.itch.io/right-click-to-necromance) and "Enter the Gungeon".

Though time was too limiting and I had to cut the scope. But people seem to enjoy it, do you think it's worth to reboot that idea with the full scope? You can try the jam-version here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/43/bloodmage-1

(Here's a gif I made during the jam when the revive-ability first worked!) GIF.gif

If you request ratings, give them yourself!

There are a lot of people begging for plays and ratings (myself included), but there are some who are asking for ratings but aren't giving them out. FOR SHAME! If you ask for ratings, have the common decency to play some games and give ratings yourself. It's very selfish and in poor taste to ask for ratings while not giving any. This is a community. Get involved, give constructive criticism so we can all improve our skills!

Whee~

To my own surprise, I'm still having fun when I play my compo game, Regain Power
