Ludum Dare 47 October 2–5, 2020

LD 47 retrospect

With a week to spare I've got the ratings. Thanks everyone who got involved!

What started as a pre-jam coding exercise ended up being a pretty viable thing. Thanks everyone who +1'd theme :smile: (I voted against it precisely on grounds of having some code ready)

orboros-5x4.png

Now, how it went?

First things first. Was it fun? Yes, it was! A new game was born, more serious than the previous installments in my personal series of space stuff.

In the week before the jam I started to assemble a more refined Vulkan rendering library. After the jam I extracted some common parts back to the library. Next game would be even easier to start.

I wanted to stay 2D and use fancy shaders instead. That didn't fly. Drawing lines went good enough, but faking spheres with math got me only so much. And then there was problems with lines occluded by a square "sprite".

Capture d’écran de 2020-09-29 23-42-17.png

Reluctant to use model files I generated an icosphere and, after fixing all the usual problems with camera, depth and face orientation...

Capture d’écran de 2020-10-01 00-48-40.png

Next came the dread of amateur developers, the glorious quaternions.

Adding glitch to corruption, orbital elements calculation library used different coordinate basis and different math library (I made one myself to work specifically with vulkan coordinate system without jumping through OpenGL hoops).

Orienting things for linear motion is trivial(-ish), rotating frames require a few more tricks. Which I botched and, given the time constraints, decided to skip. That's why you see nice ambiguous spheres instead of nice pointy spaceships :sweat:

Capture d’écran de 2020-10-01 23-53-22.png

On the other hand, adding planet and background textures from cube maps was fairly straightforward. I even didn't have to assemble texture arrays myself, thanks to Vulkan API and KTX format.

Adding simple directional lighting was no sweat either. I considered adding a specular reflection to the planet surface, but then had to skip over it in favor of getting controls right.

Capture d’écran de 2020-10-03 23-01-04.png

The last jam day was appropriately stressful.

I spent first half on it making a proper Linux build that could work outside my own machine. Second half went to my day job. And then third half :sweat_smile: left to iron out remaining OS and hardware compatibility issues. Few close friends were recruited for build testing.

6 hours remained to take a walk and add font rendering capability. I went with simple font atlas, but due to problems with transparency in compressed textures I switched to SDF and slap-dashed a decent renderer.

It isn't a compo game, but the source is out there nevertheless. Go check it out, unless you wholeheartedly believe Haskell is limited to academia.

Or, you can take it for another spin: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/orboros

Big thanks for all the ratings, comments and plays!

Quick thanks to all my fellow jammers! Really it's been a blast so far! :skull:

If anyone still wants to check it, here's my HTML game 'Group Chat'.

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/group-chat

And here's a devlog I posted earlier about my 3D character process, hopefully I can make another one before the end that'll go 'behind the music'.

Here's a fun entry almost at 20 ratings, let's get it there!

Looper

This was one of the first games I played through and reviewed when rating began, and it pains me to keep seeing it in the danger category as I thought it was fun to play through, albeit it is quite a large download and I was fairly harsh in my original feedback. I also spent quite a bit of time trying to beat it, I suppose that has something to do with it as well. It is the nicest looking (in my opinion of course) 3D game I've seen yet, I really liked how all of the art came together and the gameplay, although most certainly limited by the universal nature of this jam, was fun and had a unique twist to it. Either way, the link is above if anyone is interested in giving that entry the ratings it needs, at the very least I enjoyed playing through it.

Need more Ratings!

Please help, I am in the need for a couple more ratings as I want more feedback as I am 12 and need to improve my skills a lot.

Please check my game out at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/loopamonium.

Thank you everyone! And good luck on rankings

Keyboard Cowboys Recommend...

keyboardcowboys.jpg

It’s that time again…

The Keyboard Cowboys have been hard at work playing as many games as we can this LD! Our lives have been crazy, but that hasn’t stopped us (too much)!

And we’re so glad that we’ve been able to play so many so far, because there are some absolute bangers in this pool this year. The bar for quality has definitely been raised, and there are some super talented people on here who are rising to the challenge.

In an effort to spread the love, we’d like to highlight some of our favorite games that we’ve played so far. We’ve consciously decided to order them from fewest to most ratings received, in hopes that the more underrated games get more attention, but we love them all, regardless!

So now, without further ado, heeeeeerrreee we go!

Terror of the Lazy River

@birdwards

lazyRiver.jpg

We’re honestly shocked this one hasn’t gotten more attention. It checks all of the boxes of a great LD entry in our opinion. Simple gameplay, a fun unique premise, pleasant visuals, and a practically bug-less experience (at least when we played). This one takes < 5 min to play and is just a great all-around package.

Stuck in a Drum Loop

@rodobodolfo

drumLoop.jpg

Speaking personally, I have a huge weakness for games that just sound nice. I’m sure you’ll find that to be a pattern throughout this post. Stuck in a Drum Loop is no exception, and it’s super novel to boot! I get really sad when unique entries like this don’t get more attention. :slight_frown:

In the Loop

@thegamerasd

circlePong.jpg

Speaking of novel concepts deserving of more attention, In the Loop is a super clever high-score single-player Pong game that is both easy to understand but super tricky to master. We highly suggest you check it out!

Universalis

@hawkin

universalis.jpg

Hey look, it’s another beautiful-sounding game. Not only that, but it looks beautiful as well! This is a fun little orbital sandbox toy that is well worth your time to play around with. Hats off to making this thing solo!

Chipperton

@atmctype, @popdaddygames

chipperton.jpg

Chipperton is a pleasant little experience where absolutely nothing bad happens. The two devs behind the game must’ve worked themselves to death to pump out this much content in such a short span of time. Go support their hard work!

Clockmaker

@cyphyrgriffon, @tristan-mansfield

clockmaker.jpg

Clockmaker is one of those “I could definitely see this expanded into a full game” entries that always seems to impress us. While the difficulty curve ramps up shockingly fast, the game has a level of polish and design focus that deserves more attention.

Goop Loop

@jitspoe

gooploop.jpg

I hate this game and I love this game. If you are at all a fan of Bennett Foddy-esque games, I guarantee you will enjoy this one. More people need to play this. I will be back to conquer it eventually…

Loophole Kingdom

@mateusboga

loopholeKingdom.jpg

We’ve seen a lot of “Groundhog Day” games during this jam, but Loophole Kingdom differentiated itself with some super clever writing and equally charming artwork. The fact that this was accomplished solo is beyond commendable, as well.

That Dream Again

@yossarian, @turgidharrier, @bokonon

thatdreamagain.jpg

Mmmmmmmmm, this one’s cozy…Such a pleasing art style and sound design. The team here really nailed the dream-like aesthetic. Just good vibes all-around on this entry.

Woofice Chair

@moski, @kroltan, @robinaite, @jorgegamedev

wooficeChair.jpg

You can always count on Whales and Games to put out some quality stuff, and this entry is no exception. Adorable art, a solid and unique premise, and some top-notch sound design. This entry really is the whole package.

Splines ‘n Shapes

@sharkwithlasers

splinesNShapes.jpg

This entry was like ecstasy for my ears. The rewarding cohesion of sounds that result from solving a puzzle are super satisfying, and the puzzle premise itself is both simple and super novel. Go play it now!

Grave Juice

@aditon, @firebelley

graveJuice.jpg

Now this is one damn polished entry! Everything, from the sounds, to the visuals, to the unique mechanics, all work great together. While it can be a little challenging at times, the undeniable charm of this game is more than worth the effort.

Divine Drifter

@aevek, @bongard22, @floppynub, @rhoka, @keenan-wulff, @quantumcaveman, @zebshee, @drsnowdude, @brood-machina, @enzar17

divineDrifter.jpg

Buckle up, this one’s a wild ride. It’s immediately apparent how much love and attention was put into this game. The music’s bangin’, the visuals are striking, and the mechanics are silly and fun to mess around with. This is one seriously impressive entry.

Singularity

@andre-sadie, @nsadie

singularity.jpg

Singularity is such a simple yet novel premise. It’s like some weird hybrid between a card game, puzzle game, and competitive 1v1 game. And it all just…works! We’re all a big fan of this one.

O O O

@rextgun

ooo.jpg

This game takes a super simple premise and pushes it to the extreme. It’s a testament to elegant design with how much the dev was able to squeeze out of such a straightforward mechanic.

Lily Pad Drifters

@mike09123

lilyPad.jpg

“Simple to learn, hard to master” is the name of the game for this entry. We love the unique concept here, and once you start to get into the flow, it feels suuuuuuuuper good to hop between lily pads and rack up a high score.

MonkeyVM

@znw, @micerkol, @gloomyfolken, @abvadabra

monkeyVM.jpg

We’ve seen a lot of coding games throughout this jam as well, and this one was definitely our favorite. The polish on this game, both mechanically and aesthetically, is super impressive. On top of that, the puzzles are cleverly thought-out and have a lot of meat to them (even if they did get super mind-melty by level 4…).

Amusement Shark

@no-grapes-games

amusementShark.jpg

This is one suuuuuuuuper clever action-puzzler! Navigating a maze with a constantly spinning avatar makes for some mind-bending maneuvers. Couple that with a super adorable art style, and you got yourself a winner right here!

Hyperloop

@onkel-mo, @m2u-84, @bastian, @leeloo, @mrpoopybutthole, @duke, @byzanth, @eweren, @kayahr, @pushking, @headcr4sh, @kuri, @zeenyoga, @thecoconutdream, @very-dark-lord

hyperloop.jpg

Entries like these make us feel like complete n00bs by comparison. Hyperloop does an excellent job of crafting a unique atmosphere with solid gameplay mechanics, an impressive amount of assets, superb lighting, and A++ sound design. We forgot we were playing a game that was made in a weekend for a few minutes.

Paper Planes

@samdemaine

paperplanes.jpg

Y’all have probably seen this one floatin’ around the front page already, and for good reason. This is a charming, simple little game that nails exactly what it sets out to do. I could see myself booting this up in my younger years to kill time in class, which I think is a telltale sign of a classic entry. :ok_hand:

…And there you have it! Those are some of our favorites that we’ve played so far. With less than a week to go, the clock is ticking for us, and we still have a lot more games to play, so if we discover any more gems between now and then, we’ll be sure to post additional recommendations!

Again, we are super floored at the level of quality this time around. Keep on keepin’ on, we can’t wait to see what y’all put out next!

‘Til next time. :pointright: :cowboy: :pointright:

Thank you for playing our game!

We would like to thank all the feedbacks we received, and to say that we are very happy with the results of our game! Everyone worked hard to deliver the most complete and polished game possible, with a very original story and responsive controls. If you haven’t played in a while, we’re waiting for your feedback!

Thank you!

How should I host my post jam game?

Hi, where should I host my post jam version as I don't want to host the post jam as another game on itch.io as I can't host 2 HTML5 on one page but, I want it to be a online game. Hope you understand my problem and as you all might be familiar to hosting post jams, where do you host them? And I know that it is too late to post a post jam as there is only 4 days left.

Please help us reach 20 ratings!

We need only 3 more! So it would be great if you tried and rated Memorial!
