Ludum Dare 45 October 4–7, 2019

Escape the Minotaur

LD45 07em10/em2019 22em14/em17.png This game is a Ludum Dare 45 Submission. It is progressing game, where you need to run from the Minotaur, and if you can possibly defeat it! You can progress over time getting more stronger, and it is easier to kill the Minotaur!

This game was developed by University students from S.A.E. London, for some this game is the second game ever developed, for some it is the first! It was a really funny experience, even though we couldn’t polish the game as much as we wanted and everything was breaking last minute. It was a good experience, and I hope you enjoy it!

We learned a lot in this project, which was what we were most looking forward to! Since this was everyone’s first jam, it was very frustrating but very cool to work so closely and the team kept motivating each other!!

Sadly we couldn’t put the game in the web sorry!

The controls are:

Right click - Bring torch up, can light other torches if close enough. Left click - Attack if you have a sword W-A-S-D - Move E - open chest, grab torch from wall

R - To withdraw Sword

Well .... been through some entries now - and enjoyed snooping

Will not go into too much detail... but here are some of my favorites...

Hellion - by @mad-brokli

Best one I have come across - not that complex, but well executed and the entry I had the most fun with (including my own  )

01_Hellion.png

Something - by @martynas

Well this one actually reminds me of my own - but I think it's more artistic and very well executed. 02_Something.png

Dr. Deckenstein - by @Quill18

And last but not least had fun with Dr. Deckenstein (sounds a bit creepy) :spiderweb: 03/emDeckenstein.png

Which ones did you enjoy?

:purple_heart: :dart: :frog:

The 3rd poster is completed.

Honestly, compared to the ones I made in the previous LDs, these are kinda lacking, especially compared to the ones I did for Ludum Dare: The Game.

Still, come try out The Persistent Thief please, and I hope you have fun!

Socks... the idle sock game... involving socks

An idle game no one asked for

A game made to fill a hole in the market... that did not exist.

A game developed for iOS, released on WebGL, then quickly re-released as stand alone

A game so intense, the sound had to be removed for your own safety

A game so big, it won't fit within your display properly

This is Socks... the idle clicker sock game... involving socks

Socks Screen Shot.png

The sizing issue has been fixed :D (notice the little magnifying glass in the top right of the screen shots!)

This is my second LD game. I had a lot of fun making it. The game does need a lot of balancing, but I'll have a go at fixing that after LD45 finishes.

If you get a chance to play, I really hope you enjoy it in some way or other :)

Time to play some games!

Now that my game is "done", it's time for the fun part of LD - playing games!

Post your games below, doesn't really matter what they are, but if you've got any building/crafting games, I'd love to play those in particular

Also, if you have the time, it would be great if you could check out my game, Robogon

The transition from dirt to grass in A Field of Flowers

I'm really happy with how this transition turned out even though it's not perfect. It's actually the first thing I did for LD45 before I had a real idea for a project. Finishing this animation sparked so many ideas!

Nothing In The Way

Nothing In The Way is a little puzzle/plateform game I made for my first ever compo submission. I'm a designer/programmer so the art work was a huge challeng. However, I'm really proud of my little game and would be happy to get your feedback on it!

Start from nothing then you Snowball

Ludum Dare is such a great community to meet people and work together to make something great or just have fun in general. Here's a game our team and I would like you to enjoy:

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/snow-ball

You start with nothing but a snowball and slowly consume everything you can. We need 5 more ratings and we get 20 ratings.

Also thanks to all those who made some really great games! Special thanks to those who left some really nice comments. You guys make Ludum Dare a fun place for indie devs, hobbyists, pros, casuals, etc. Keep up the good work!

A Retrospective On My First Game Jam

Banner.png

I think I started writing this expecting it to be more directly related to Frogbert instead of generally about the jam, but here's a little piece I wrote about my experience participating in a game jam for the first time.

My main take away? You have enough time that you don't need to crunch, or always be rushing. As a counterpoint: that doesn't mean you have time to add all the little touches you want. You need to be pretty ruthless about getting things done quickly and dropping things that aren't working.

I still like this poster

Poster 1.png

It's better than the 2 others I made in my opinion.

Come and play The Persistent Thief! And I hope you have fun!

A few unused screenshots

So we finished our first-ever jam game as a team! I mean, I (@wolfrug) have done a few before, but it was my first time doing the jam, and my compadres @vesper (story) and @joe-wright (art) were in it for the first time. And they knocked it out of the park, obvz.

I took a ton of screenshots for the game page, but realized too much is too much. But there is no such thing for a blog post, is there? Anyway, loving all the feedback so far. Come play our game! (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/beyond-the-veil)

I am actually a huge fan of how the "levitating" mechanic worked out in the end. Too bad I didn't have time to implement it in all that many places.

EPIC FINAL SHOWDOWN.

I wanted to have more platforming, but alas - time.

The making of Witches Beware

So, this was my second LD and my second completed entry. My team and I made a small dialog based game called Witches Beware, created around a grim but (hopefully) funny story.

We managed to publish with 44 seconds left on the clock. It was the first dialog based game for all of us, and while there are many things we didn't quite get around to, I am happy with the result. Our team of three were divided on programming, art & sound and story & dialog. We sat together for the most part, so while my role was primarily art & sound, I got to participate in both programming and story as well. All in all I had a blast.

I hope you will give Witches Beware a try. Feedback will also be very much appreciated.

There are some great games this Ludum Dare!

I've had a ball playing the games that people have produced this LD. A lot of creativity and some really interesting approaches to the theme. I've played survival crafting games, platformers where I had to learn how to move, text-based experiences about love and loss, farming simulators, universe creation simulators, games about trees growing faster than monkeys can climb and much more.

It's always interesting to see what kind of ideas a theme stimulates.

Thanks to everyone that played and rated my game. I've really enjoyed all of yours!

Added Web Version + Bugfix

Hi.

This Ludum Dare was tough on me, and I needed a couple days rest after completing. Getting on with the rating and feedback process today, so I thought I'd inform y'all that I have also added a Web Version of the game to the itch.io page and fixed a bug that potentially prevented you from finishing the game.

Graphics wise I never got around to fixing that - not much sound either. I had spent the first 24 hours on a completely different game and was just about to give up - realizing I would not finish that idea in time. This idea popped in my head and I thought I might be able to pull it off in just over 48hrs. Considering those circumstances - I'm not totally unhappy with what I got.

Check the game out! As usual - those who rate and comment on my game get top priority on the games I choose to rate and play.

Retrospective

We were 3 to create our Gameboy-styled RPG engine, The Reboot of the King

We have neither animations, nor music, nor an ending, but the main playable parts are here !

Myself on the engine coded in love2d, titeboule and kusanagi417 on level design, story, pictures.

screenshot1.png

My conclusions :

  • I think we needed more time to work separately and concentrate, instead of brainstorming the whole time.

  • It was nice to just work on one part of the game, and just let the others take care of the rest. I used to do everything and stay stubborn on small details in other projects. This time I just worked on my part, and the others just did a great job in their own way, the result is just fine. :)

  • Being together in the same place kept us motivated.

  • I think we should have started with an existing basic game engine (created earlier), to be able to put other resources (sound, pictures, dialogs) and play with them even while coding.

  • LÖVE (love2d) is a pretty low-level engine compared to godot, game maker, unity... but I already knew this, and I'm happy because now I have a custom working prototype of gameboy rpg engine, ready to be improved.

  • We should have worked more on the "marketing" part, I mean a better cover, menu screen, description...

Anyways, I'm ready for another game jam soon, as a team or alone. 💓

Population - My first Ludum Dare submission!

logoc.png

What a populus city!

POPULATION is a city-builder that focuses on the production of homes and (some) of what your people need! Use your available tools to create a sprawling hyper-suburban city that truely looks and feels like a dystopian council estate.

tools.png

Love this part of town

Construct roads, bridges, powerlines, solar farms, houses and plant trees. Demolish till your ~~heart's content~~ wallet's empty!

Save and load your city to come back to it at some other time, or just pretend you will - imagine that!

road.png

A true sim - witty!

Experience immersive terrain, with fully dynamic roadways and impressively blue water and oceans. Connect homes to power-sources with powerlines and keep that wattage up, or risk losing all power! Tragic!

road3.png

screeen.png

In all seriousness, this was my first Ludum Dare after being a simple spectator for many years. I did find it much harder than I thought and I'm sure I spent many hours laying on my bed and staring trying to come up with enough energy or ideas to push forward. Regardless, I think Population is a fun and hopefully different interpretation of the theme. I realised mid way through that a city builder is a very ambitious thing to try and produce in such a small time so I had to strip out some features from my original idea, but I hope this game still remains fun enough for you to enjoy. I didn't start till mid-day Saturday as I wasn't prepared to give up my Friday night, it's still freshers fortnight you know, so with that I hope you can appreciate this all a little more.

Population was written in C# with a custom engine written for this project. The whole game was written in the time from noon-midnight on Saturday and noon-midnight on Sunday, so I think that means it was written in 24 hours (weird flex, but okay).

I hope you like what I've made here, and you can follow me on twitter, instagram and github at @solwllms, visit my website or support me via PayPal if you really want.

Thank you, and have a good halloween :jackolantern:. Sol Williams.

BitterSweet - Halloween Simulator

bittersweet-title.png xmloXk.png

Come play our Halloween adventure, hack-and-slash, candy collector game!

WebGL build - https://nightember.itch.io/bittersweet

LD Page - https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/bittersweet

The curse and the blessing of this LD's theme (Making of our game - kinda).

logo kopia.PNG

First of all I think the theme was very generic. What I mean by that is almost every single game even triple AAA fills in this theme. Start with nothing is so vague, anything can work. RPG where you are Lv0 hero with leaky pants and a stick in your hand, in a strategy game where you have no armies nor resources, in metroidvania (which we decided to make for this LD ) you start with zero skills and no abilities at all, in FPS when you get more and more powerful weapons, survival games where you gather resources, racing games when you start with one crappy car, I think you get the point I'm trying to present.

We usually try to use the theme in the most creative way possible, but I'm not gonna lie, this time me and my partner, we didn't like the theme even one bit. So after quick brainstorming session we decided to do just do a regular game this time, in a genre we both love. We may have been over ambitious with what we aimed to achieve, but at the same time I think this is the best game we ever have done so far.

If you haven't played our game yet there will be spoilers below, so you read on your own risk from now on ;).

"METROIDVANIA, and how it starts with a concept."

When last LD have ended I really regretted my decision on cutting of some of the mechanics my main protagonist was supposed to have. Me and my friends, we ended up implementing maybe half of all the functionality we had intended for the PC when we realized we won't have enough time to create the rest of the game. So on Monday morning (UK time) we started cutting off content, and thx to that we barely manage to make it in time to submit our game. What we ended up with was half baked game, that could've been really cool but wasn't finished enough to serve even as a proof of concept. Many mechanics were missing, sprites were ugly and rushed, with one short level. So you think we would learn on our own mistakes right, we would've draw conclusions. Well let me show you something.

concept.png

This is our beautiful concept art, from the brainstorming session. We have BoBo our main protagonist, we have all 5 upgrades listed on the left, some map and environmental hazards ideas on the right. So we not only doubled the amount of the mechanics compared to the previous game, but we were one person short! Our team went down from 3 to just 2. Our friend had to attend wedding and couldn't join us. What could've go wrong right?

Robo.gif

This was the first GIF and design of the BoBo I've send to my programmer to hear his opinion out. I got greenlighted and proceeded to animate him. It took me over one day with him. I guess it didn't help that mid the process I got stroked by the genius idea, and decided that propeller on top of BoBo's head will be more interesting than just boring rocket shoes/jet pack. So I got excited and went ahead with my idea, and when I finished I reached my programmer again, guess what was the first thing he worked on and finished. That's right, rocket boots. Fully functional with propelling, fuel system and particle effect. We ended up using none of that, I'm a bad friend I know. But i felt it would be the best proof of going from nothing to something. Let me explain, but first check this out, ain't that ball cute?

propeler3.gif

When you start our game you play as a little limbless ball, that can only roll on it's sides. You are in a gloomy, dim, empty environment. As you progress through the game you unlock more limbs, you bring back the power to the place, and get new means to pass through the obstacles. When you finally get the final upgrade, the propeller, we cut you loose and let you go freely to do what you want. You can continue the game, you can go back and explore the entire map. I thought having this freedom would contrast really nicely with how little to almost nothing you had at the beginning. We even emphasized that feeling with the game ending but I won't spoil it here.

bobemsprite/emsheet kopia.png

Complete(I think) sprite sheet of BoBo. Some of these frames were never used in the game, even though they are implemented. Why? Because in the end I was forced to cut the content. But this time to make it on time I decided to forsake our level. My tile set was very limited, and I only got to building our environment and level 4 hours before the end of the jam. I had so many doubts going through my head when I started making it. I was angsty and angry that I spend all that time animating main character and it will go to waste. I wanted to quit jam, I basically started lacking motivation to push forward. I had to finish the entire map for Metroidvania game in around 2 hours, because my friend had to hook up and connect together all the mechanics, make levers I placed functional, magnets to move around, conveyor belt platforms to push you and so on. I manage to finish the map I designed in 2 and a half hours. Half an hour of delay, and believe me I cut out like 30% of the level I had on paper.

map.png

If you played our game this should look familiar. That's my mini map I've made for myself as a guide before I started building the level. But you can see that almost all of the middle section is gone and what we have in the game is very simplify straight forward corridor. Some other sections in the game also got simplified, and shortened. Even the last hall, room, is way different.

It's 9 45 PM on my clock. Only and hour and few minutes left. My friends starts implementing his stuff. I think this is the best moment to tell you guys how lucky I am to have such talented, brilliant, and sharp focused friend. I may have witnessed a miracle. He finished his stuff in less then half an hour, and kept going programming some other stuff, implementing new features till the same end. 15 minutes before jam ended we didn't even had properly working sound. No music, no sound effects. nothing. I have no clue what he did and how he did it, but I think in the last hour of the jam he managed to code and implement at least 4 final features, scripted ending cutscene, hooked up sound effects to everything, scripted dynamic music and bringing on back power, and creating a tutorial for the players. He is an MVP of that project. He saved us both, and I am grateful to him for that. He also pushed me to continue working on a torch mechanic, when I was eager to drop it, because it seemed like such lame mechanic. Also thanks to him it ended up being my favorite one. Once again we made it, even though he had to drag me on his shoulder for the last hours of the jam.

LD45postmockup.png

In the end I'm really proud of what we achieved. BoBoBot I think is a pretty good game with a lot packed in it, specially for less than 3 days of development life cycle. And I think it wouldn't be possible if not for that theme. You see, even though I hated it at start it grew on me with time. Because we couldn't figure out anything unique and fun we could do with it, we decided to take more generic approach, but pour our hearts and minds in doing so. I can say one thing, from now on I will not judge the theme before the jam ends.

logo.PNG

PS. I love reading and watching making offs, and listen to other people stories abot their experience with game dev, so I decided to share this time mine. I would really love to hear about your experience, so go ahead and share it in the comments. No matter if you think it was boring or not, I love to read it all. Peace.

Memories of Eleph

In this game, Eleph, the small elephant, starts with nothing… including his memories. Face his fears, solve puzzles and collect his memories before it’s too late and he forgets everything, once again!

It’s was our first Ludum dare and we really enjoyed working on this! We hope you like it! If you haven't played it yet, come check it out and feel free to give us some feedback! :)

List of games from spanish devs

Hi there, guys!

I'm curious about what kind of games had been develoved by gamedevs of my own country (Spain). People with similar roots can create a lot of different things, I'm pretty sure!

There are thousands of games in Ludum Dare's Game section and I thougt of creating this list of spanish developed games.

Another 3 people and me created "InkTent", a new concept of platformer that I'm sure everyone of you will enjoy.

You can find it in the following link: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/inktent

Play the game, vote it and share your spanish developed games and I'll play and vote everyone of them!

I can't wait to see what my equals have created!

Cheers and happy dev!

Come play !

A reason to play Wobbly Scraps?

PreviewScrapsBanner.png

You can chase a fat mutant monster while riding a motorbike equiped with circular saws and lots of FLAMETHROWERS ezgif.com-gif-maker.gif

You have to kill a bloodthirsty monster starting with nothing!

But you can do it we believe in you! Just follow these few steps:

  1. RUN AWAY!!!!! ezgif.com-resize.gif

  2. BUILD a crappy war machine with junk dragging on the ground! ezgif.com-resize (1).gif

  3. And when you got enough fire power, FIGHT BACK AND TAKE THIS B* DOWN!!! ezgif.com-resize (1).gif

Flappy Bat - A Development Timelapse

logo_less.gif

Hello! We've created a development timelapse for our submission, Flappy Bat! It shows the evolution of the project from the humble beginnings of the jam to the final published version!

If you would like to play the game before watching the video you can find it at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/flappy-bat

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hERbgPB7syk

The game is made in GameMaker Studio 2, and this timelapse would not have been possible without using source-control (bitbucket and sourcetree). It really helped us (team of two) collaborate during the project! If not already, do yourself a favor for the next jam and get started using some type of source control! :floppy_disk:

Now with a WEB BUILD!

I had some comments about not having a web build so here it is! Five Finger Discount with a windows executable AND a web build.
