Great User elements in "Nothing"

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/nothing-19

So we made a little game called "Nothing". The core concept is an alchemy game to which everyone can add new elements and connections. Right now we already have far over 200 Elements created by users from the ludum dare community with new ones being added all the time. We were really impressed by the quality of the pixel art that is now hidden in our game, so we decided to showcase some of the ones we found:

20 Reviews! Thinking about releasing OST after results.

Thanks Everyone! I see that a lot of reviews are mentioning enjoying the soundtrack a lot. We had one guy on our team of 4 specifically do all the music cause we feel music is what ties a game together.

We are thinking of releasing the OST on Youtube or Soundcloud after the rating period if people keep taking note of the soundtrack and we get decent ratings in the audio department!

Procedural trees - post-dare dev

Since I was never happy with the ways the trees worked in the original, I thought I'd have a go at procedural / random generation of tree shapes.

Very trial and error. Anyone else done something similar? Did you use curves / smooth falloff, or just randomising?

I've yet to figure how to fill the gaps / recreate a similar style to the fixed trees. On the plus side, the collision will be consistent - so each 'chunk' of leaves will be a platform for some Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon style battles.

A few lines about I Have Nothing

Oups, maybe I made the INSANE difficulty a bit toooo hard. I can't even get past a score of 300 =)

I am considering doing a competition again like I did with Blot with some Steam giftcards as prizes. I was going to put it on the Insane difficulty but I think that might just be a bit too hard. I will do some more testing on Hard and see if that is suitable. I would be interested in what region of scores you guys can get on Hard and Insane.

Daedalus v0.0.2: Input improvements + bug/feature dilemma

I've updated the latest build for Master Builder Daedalus's on Windows and Web platforms with some bug fixes to the movement controls and tile visibility.

While I was sorting those things out, I also remembered one point raised by one commenter: Cancelling a block placement destroys the block. That behaviour was intended to add some heavy weight to the order in which you would reveal scrolls, but since you don't really know what scroll you're getting (on the first try) destroying the block forever punishes the player to the point of maybe losing the game just because they were unlucky.

Players can easily perceive this as a bug, so I was tempted to add it to v0.0.2. However, as I tested the change I realised it significantly improved the way to tackle a level: now a player could use it on all the reachable scrolls at any point to reveal the blocks and therefore be able to make a more informed decision. And of course, blocks will no longer get lost forever

Compare the destructive version destructive-cancel.gif

vs the non-destructive: non-destructive-cancel.gif

This, to me, wouldn't be so much a technical issue as iterating on a wrong design decision. The "fix" in this case would go beyond what would be allowed by the rules if I wanted to still keep this as part of the compo experience, so I've decided to stash it for an incoming post-compo version.

In any case, now I'm curious about your thoughts. Where do you draw the line in these cases?

Big comunity Project

Hi, I am thinking of releasing a big update for my game genesis1 after the rating is over with the help of the community.

To those of you who have not played my game: It is a god simulator, you create a world by a mix and match style selection of textures for the terrain, 3D models as trees and living creatures(some of which are animated) and 2d billboard style grass objects.

This can lead to hilarious creations like Jaguar fur textured beaches with lava textured mountains while there are forests out of swords, will smith heads as grass and roaming houses.

Check out some of the screenshots in the comments for reference: (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/genesis-1-god-simulator)

Now I talked with the creators of a few other LD Submissions and came up with the Idea of releasing a community version of the game with assets from all across the different LD entries after the rating period is over. I feel like releasing a game with contributions from maybe even hundreds of different LD creators would be something really special for the community.

I could use all 2D textures as terrain options all 2D characters and objects as grass options and 3D models as trees and animals.

Is that something you guys would be interessted in? If yes I'll come up with a way for you to provide assets and make some follow up posts about the procedure.

Please leave your thoughts on the Idea in the comments.

Leverage: I learned a lot! Thank you for all the feedback

This is my First Ludum Dare game jam. I really like how the system works here and compels us to rate and give valuable feedback to other games in order to get rating and valuable feedback for your game.

My game is a Manual Tower Defense Game where the player have to flip all the levers and defend them from the bots by clicking on them (yeah, no towers). Each lever will empower the player: New Visuals, New Area, New Ability.

leverageGIF2.gif

Play my game. Rate my game. Link here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/leverage-1

During this post-jam period, I enjoyed playing awesome games made by others. Some of those games made me think, "I wish I had that idea", while few of the games made me realize that my own game isn't that bad.

I did my best to give an honest and valuable feedback to those games. And in return, I received the same.

Here is the list of things that I received via feedback. I have added my perspective to the points as well. I think it would also help you to make better games in the future by considering these points and comparing them to the gameplay of my current game.

-> Very slow gameplay in the beginning. - by @tero-pulkkinen and @storrs-steelers

-> Abilities menu seems very optional i.e a part of the screen should be dedicated to them instead of right-clicking to display it. Player can play the entire game without ever noticing the abilities menu. - by @orpartlu, @danie, @landosystems and @zachary-shah

-> During clicking the bots to destroy them, you can always click the lever by mistake which can be very frustrating. Although I have considered it as a part of the challenge, having a seperate easy mode without this frustrating feature would make the game more accessible. - by @keithdae

-> Bots immediately flip the lever OFF when reaching the lever. It is not a bad thing but having a small delay with a visual indicator would give the player real survival feeling upon destroying that bot (you know the feeling, 'oh that was real close!'). - by @oneki

-> Player can play the game forever without ever reaching the win screen/completing the goal. In order to activate the challenge, the player needs to flip ON all the 10 levers. But there is no indicator to tell the player that a lever is not flipped ON (or a lever is flipped OFF). - by @humphreysmedia and @barracudadisaster

-> The arrows that lead to different areas, are not aligned. They are not in the same place which tends to create friction between player actions. Going from area 1 to area 3 isn't as simple as double clicking. I tried aligning it but there is this bug that, if the player wants to go from area 1 to area 2 and clicked just once, there is a probability that player will reach area 3 instead of area 2 which is even more annoying. I introduced a smaller problem in order to get rid of a bigger problem haha. - by @humphrysmedia, @danie, @storrs-stealers, @nisovin, @sorlok and @honey-pony

-> Taking the same area arrows into consideration, it would have been much better to have the keyboard up and down arrows used for changing the area or even better, using the scroll wheel for this purpose. - by @nisovin and @amerigo-gazaway

-> A scrolling camera would have made the game much better as compare to the area-to-area camera. The player would have a better sense of space with a scrolling camera and he/she would be more able to differentiate between different areas. - by @honey-pony

-> Even though the abilities are self-explanatory (for me only, duh), having tooltips for them or some kind of basic tutorial would have made the game more accessible. - by @storrs-steelers

-> Upon hovering over the minimap, it shifts to the other place on the screen. I did this to make sure that player can see bots or walls that are obscured by the minimap. But this can create confusion. Having a fixed minimap will do the job. A better solution would be to make the minimap more transparent upon hovering. - by @kuviman (during his Twitch stream)

-> Minimap should indicate which area the player is currently looking at. An outline rectangle on the minimap covering the area that is rendered by the camera. - by @oune

-> There is a lot of shadows in the areas which makes it hard to differentiate between roof and the paths. Having more atmospheric lights (and just better lighting) would make it clearer. Or a simple solution would be to increase the contrast between the roof and the floor. - by @psiv

-> The bots' pathfinding is buggy. They all tend to go towards some of the levers (distance doesn't matter) instead of going towards the nearest ones. - by @kuviman (during his Twitch stream)

-> The challenge/win condition is very rigid. Having all the 10 levers flipped ON in order to have a countdown means that you already have all the powers (visuals, areas, abilities). Now, all you have to do, is to stop the bots from reaching any of the levers for a certain time. Now, here's the problem: (1) any mistake would be unforgivable i.e if any bot reaches any lever or if you clicked any lever by mistake, you have to do the challenge again, from the start which can be very frustrating. (2) value/essence of all the abilities is the same i.e it doesn't matter if player prefers a particular ability more than other abilities. Having 7 to 8 levers flipped ON instead of 10 levers for the challenge/win condition would make the game much more flexible and the player can have much more interesting decisions. - by @yaen

-> There is no feeling of progression. Player can immediately flip all the 10 levers ON. These should be some delay between flipping the levers. That way, not only player will feel the progress but the player will also notice the change due to flipping the lever ON, test that change and try to use that change to his/her advantage. I wanted to implement it but I didn't have enough time to do so. - by @yaen

<<< THANK YOU FOR THE AWESOME FEEDBACK AND FOR RATING MY GAME! >>>

Interior design with Mr Raccoon

Drawing rooms can be a long boring task, but I wanted a believable cozy environment for Mr Raccoon. Fortunately it was a minimal one because Mr Raccoons, as we know, hates clutter!

I started by finding the perspective I needed and traced the main walls. You can do this by creating a perspective grid or by downloading one. Something that looks like this: perspective-grid.png

Then I draw the walls: I make walls with 2 layers: one for the texture, one with the colour, I put the colour layer in multiply mode so you see through but still can change the colour whenever you want. stanza1.png

I used a wood texture I simplified a bit for the floor and made sure to transform it so that the perspective was ok.

stanza2.png Then I looked for some furniture. I use photo references and I trace on them. Sometimes if they have a special texture I use some filter to cut out the extra colour, as in the case of the cushion he meditates on.

For the shojis, the japanese doors, I built one and duplicated it wherever I needed it. If you are using photoshop, the smart object feature lets you create templates so if you have to change something later, every window you made will change accordingly. stanza3.png With time you can create your library of furniture to speed up your interior design process.

stanza4.png

At that point everything was still a bit messy flat and random colored. What I did next was: Arranging the furniture where I needed it Adding shadows: mainly shading the corners of the room and all the edges between the walls.

Next I added the outdoor scenery: a garden that I modified to make it look bright, saturated and a bit blurred.

You see in the pictures above the final colours, but this is how everything looked like before I...

stanza5.png

chose a color palette. This is an important step. I wanted all the colour in the scene to make sense. There are different palette generating tool you can use. I like this one: https://coolors.co/app

I decided that my main colour would be the red of Mr Raccoon’s kimono and so I chose the other colours accordingly. Then I saved the palette and went back to my room trying to adjust the hue of everything so that it fell into one of my colours. stanza6.png The final result was so much better this way!

King of nothing gets soundtrack

A rhythm game with just the ticking metronome and without music is.... Weird right?

But time was short, and we don't have the skills to make music. The king was upset.

'Shadowy Monster Land' development time-lapse

I used Chronolapse to time-lapse record the development of my game 'Shadowy Monster Land' (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/shadowy-monster-land - Please rate!).

Here (https://gofile.io/?c=RNPotJ) is the resulting video - 2.5 days of development squashed into 4 minutes! One screenshot every 30 seconds, then a couple of long periods where nothing happened deleted.

And here (because why not - let's call it art) is the average of all frames: Average.png

HEARTSCAPE: working on a post jam version

title_LD.PNG

I'm working on adding new cards, levels and elements for a post-jam version of Heartscape (play it here!). I'll update the game once the rating period is over, but here is a glimpse at the new cards:

new_cards.gif

The Bubble, the Balloon and the Thorn Bush! They were half-coded during the jam, so I cut them before the submission. I still have a few ideas to bring the total to around 15-20 different cards in order to have more diverse deckbuilding options.

"The pain’s always the same.”

An interrogation room. Sitting on one end of a table is a woman. On the other is you - a detective tired of asking questions, but desperate for answers.

Who is the woman? Why is she here? What has she done?

The only way to find out is to talk. Every conversation topic giving new leads to chase down. Some worthwhile. Others not so much.

Follow the rabbit hole until you reach the truth.

Click to investigate.

5 games I really enjoyed

I've played a lot of really good games this LD. Now that I've played a bit over a 100 - here's 5 that I enjoyed a lot as each does something (or many things) really, really well and which may have flown a bit under most radars.

In no particular order (click on game's name to take you to the game's page):

S.W.N

A tight precision platformer with a full level editor included.

260fe.gif

No Body's Problem

Another platformer but this one is all about puzzle solving, as a falling-apart zombie. 260fe.gif

Protoverse

A mini universe simulation with some amazing music

260fe.gif

A Brand New World

A card/board/simulation game about building a thriving eco system

260fe.gif

😊😢😠 (emoji)

A very cute and very polished little sandbox

The bug that took a week to fix VS the game that took 48 hrs

So having finished Slave: Unchained (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/slave-unchained) last weekend I quickly realised it insta crashed on most peoples systems.

SlaveUnchainedShowcase1.gif

First off why? Well turns out I'm a noob at GPU programming and (I'm assuming) I was using features that were not supported on older cards.

I was doing something stupid for my tile maps. I was storing all the texture atlas lookups in a big shader uniforms. Older cards have limitiations to how big these uniforms can be!

So I had to change the entire tilemap implementation. A bug that cauess you to restructure your entire backend? Those the best.

In the end I opted for using a texture as a lookup. The issue there is that openGL is pretty obtuse. I had to make sure that I understood properly what happens to texel values when it's offloaded to the GPU, and the kind of data I was sending was correct.

After wrangling that, I had additional problems. To not get too bogged down, turns out incorrectly using "flat" in shaders creates some odd behaviour in older cards but not in newer ones. Not fun.

This soon went from an afternoon fix to a substantial week long rewrite. Does that follow in the spirit of ludum dare? I dunno. I mean the game is pretty much exactly the same. It's just the behind the scenes, most of it changed.

All in all. Idk. Is it fixed on all cards? Who knows. Do I want to give up forever? Most probably :)

CyberTails have update

Hi everyone again!

First, thanks for all your feedback. I appreciate it and make big feedback-based update! A lot of changes were for fix LMB spamming and very fast gameplay.

Sooo, Chaaaange Looog :)

  • All bots are on 20% slower. Yes, i made it :)
  • Change the attack system. Now, you can attack only once. But when you move - you restore your vitality AND if you counter shot, you restore all vitality.
  • Add shield for enemies. Now you can`t kill tentacle bots until you kill red bots or enemies without shield.

So, with that, you can try spam red bots for counter shots, but tentacles bots find you and kill if you continue that :) Oh, and one new enemy for you with different AI and more levels!

You can try update and rate it on this page: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/ld45-cyber-tentacles

My game Game Concepts and Level Designs Additional

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/adventure-again

  • The concept of a level design for this game is that there's nothing at first, and then there's a level added as the character moves.
  • As the character moves, a new level is added.
  • But the level that was created in the past is either lost or modified.
  • That's an important concept of the game's level design.
  • So there's no help for character movement at first.
  • I want to know what to be moved by how the level of experience.
  • But I fixed this part. Now I've shown you how to move forward at each level.
  • It's a simple and easy game, but please play it fun. And give me some advice

Post-Jam Update, taking in feedback

cursorsyay.gif

Hey everyone, I've heard people having frustrations about navigating the levels in my game because it's hard to tell what you're looking for. I recently made custom cursors to hopefully relieve these frustrations. It isn't in the current version but I wanna update it post-judging period for sure! This was definitely in my plans during the jam but I didn't prioritize it when I should have oops :innocent:

Check out Small Town

Frogbert Hit 60 Ratings

bT97N5.gif It's hard to believe our first attempt at a Ludum Dare with our silly little frog game has been getting so much love. I'm really looking forward to making a post-jam version, and in doing way more game jams going forward.

Lets play!

Heavy post-jam update

Frankly, I didn't think to work on some postjam versions, but I can't stop making HONK a little bit better. And here is a heavy update!

LD45.png

  1. NEW MUSIC! Music by TeknoAXE:
  2. New balance. Ammo and medkits now drop less frequently.
  3. Some bug fixes.

Every system is back on-line

That was a very, very long road. But I managed to make it somehow. 3 days of making game - and a week of vicious bug-fixing. But today my game's got a big post-release fix.

big_screen.jpg

You may call it a "Gold Edition". I've fixed tons of bugs, locks, AI errors. I've cut down parts that was considered to be too unfinished. Now game won't freeze or fall, enemy won't send their units our of map and won't steal your turns. If you start it, all parts will hold together until final scene with 99% probability.

*You may try it, Captian: * https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/lost-flagship

Player made poetry

Hi folks Lately playing our last Ludum Dare entry we also noticed there is plenty of possibility for poetry creation inside its mechanics and we want to explore more of that in the future evolution of this experience. Also noticed that although we have a core message we wanted to convey, due to some buggy point and click mechanics not all players were able to enjoy the full message. The core idea behind the child like poetry we made here was to create a metaphor for the sudden deep sadness that sometimes comes out of nothing and searches for us, making a path of destruction were it walks by, but also offering an opportunity to find comfort midst the chaos and then learn a bit more about how we can cope with it.

Here is a piece we put together with the sentences we found in the last part of the game

Screen Shot 2019-10-13 at 3.11.19 PM.png

This is also an invitation for everyone to try this piece of work we made this Ludum Dare, hope you can enjoy our art, music and perhaps extract potentially interesting messages for life and what sadness means to you =)

Cool Ambient OST

Hello!

For all who are interested in music: meet our really good ambient OST from the game Los Cactus: Trip with Nothing, made for LudumDare45 . The soundtrack is available on Youtube and Soundcloud:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhPVv6h52As

https://soundcloud.com/polten420/los-cactus-ost

Devlog of the soundesigner's work:

1st Day of the Jam: "Ok guys, we are making game about depressed man with a scary hallucinations, who have to cope with all shit and START WITH NOTHING his new better life..." - it was our first idea of the game we were going to create. As always, I have already known that we will change it to something completely different , therefore I haven't try to make any sounds this day.

2nd Day of the Jam: "Ok guys, we are fcked up and there are no ways to complete this idea in time. SO, we need something dumb and funny, c'mon! " - 1 hour later - "OK GUYS, we are making a game about Cactus in the desert, who has nothing to start moving, because it's fcking PLANT, OKAY?". The last thing I remember - is wild laugh and that meant we have found a decision. That evening I just have taken my guitar , connected it to my DAW and recorded "Song of the Desert". In the process of work I have been thinking about all western movies I have ever watched, about Red Dead Redemption and other western-like stuff. I played guitar with my fingers to make it sound more deep and blind. Also I have synthesized the sound of desert's wind, using white noise , filter, flanger and different modulations with them.

3rd Day of the Jam: After a hard period of disputes and discussions, we have managed to make a full plot , where the second location of our journee was oasis. And 4-5 hours later the "Oasis Song" has been made. I have used downloaded sound of water and sound of palm's leaves for inspiration. Firstly, I have imagined a timbre of water and tried to make melody, based on similarity with water drop. Secondly, I've made a deep , viscous pad sound for background and that's it!

All the SFX were made in process of development throughout all LudumDare45 Jam time.

A big update!

First of all, thank you all for the feedback. It was very helpful and it allowed me to make Bodyville more dynamic, balanced, and fun than it was before.

What was changed: - Camera: it is now much faster, and it can move diagonally. - Units: I overhauled the selection mechanism. Now, you left click to select, right click to set a destination. - You can now select multiple units with Left CTRL+Click! - Macrophages are now moving much faster, and they are able to actually catch up to the invaders. - Macrophages can now chase an invader that comes too close to them. No more idly sitting around while an invader literally brushes them. - Macrophages now divide after eating 10 invaders. This was done to improve balance. - A wave of invaders is now 20 invaders, not 6, per spawn point. There are a total of 4 spawn points, you start with one, and with every wave, an additional one is unlocked. This made the game more intense, but beatable. - An in-game tutorial was added.

Play Bodyville here: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/bodyville. The original version is still available.

Bug correction policy?

Hi folks ... I recently saw that Ludum Dare rules allow for bug correction and then I wondered ... what is considered to be a "bug"? We have always follow the rule "no update after deadline", no matter how many bugs we got ... but apparently we don't need to be so strict on that ... what do you think, have you updated your projects to add bug fixes? We have lots of simple bugs that would take like minutes to fix, but decided not to update anything so far ...
