Frogbert - Early stages

Hey all!

It's been a while since we posted something, so I figured I could share a bit about the concepts that Frogbert went through, from the initial idea to the finished concepts we worked off to create our entry.

Concepting the beginnings of Frogbert

01.png When we read the theme, we tried out best to put down some ideas. It was fairly hard to come up with nothing, but while we were writing down ideas, our concept artist, Giraffalope, was drawing some cute frogs. Because who doesn't love frogs? Eventually she ended up with this chef frog, Frogbert. All of us on the team love cooking games and restaurant management games such as Overcooked, or Cook, Serve, Delicious!, or Diner Bros, so we figured, OK, let's do something like that.

You, Frogbert, start from nothing. Not even your chef hat! And the idea was (is?) to build up your restaurant, to upgrade and invent new recipes and continue adding new cooking stations and difficulty, going from your humble beginnings at the pond to a fine dining establishment. What we've made is a slice of that pie. But how did we want to present it?

02.png At first, we were thinking literal conveyor belts - much like those in Overcooked. But it didn't quite fit our theme of a frog from humble beginnings.

As we continued to develop the concept, we exchanged the conveyors with streams of water with lilypads holding the ingredients. Giraffalope continued fleshing out the idea of the kitchen, adding the different elements, from customers to utilities to UI, which we then discussed amongst the team to figure out the scope of it and if we could do it in the time frame. This is our first Ludum Dare, after all! 03.png 06.png

At this point, we still hadn't quite figured out how we would start the whole thing. Because it didn't quite fit the theme of "you start with nothing". And perhaps it still doesn't really, but at least we made a bit of an effort! So we thought, OK, what if you don't even start with the hat? 07.png Perfect.

While Giraffalope was doing all these concepts, I was working on making all the 3D elements and setting up the environment in Unity. Our programmer, mathemagician, was making progress on the prototype. 6124d831da29595b0fb11805518b9351.gif 3D.PNG

From there on out, Giraffalope was drawing all of our UI elements, many which we couldn't even get around to implementing with the time constraints and our inexperience with Unity!

Here are the finished concepts that we basically made our game around. Unfortunate that we couldn't implement a nice system for the day cycle to move from morning to night. That's something we will likely want to implement later. FrogDays.jpg

My Ludum Dare Video!

My video about Ludum Dare is finally out. I would love if you checked it out and gave me feedback! It is the story of how my first Ludum Dare was a DISASTER!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ofNCCKaC-sM

"Dogville" movie as aesthetic reference for "Dear Diary"

Have you ever saw "Dogville", from the danish director Lars Von Trier? If not, I recommend it a lot! It was a really good movie, with a really good story.

When the theme was revealed, I admit I was very happy because it was the theme I hoped for. I already has the idea of the empty space and the scene is being revealed when the story is developing. But at the beginning I was trying to do an white scene, like the Assassin's Creed loading screen.

First I modeled all the furniture and characters.

Props.jpg

But when I started to put everything in the game engine. I felt so sad with the result.

img-(10508).jpg

At this time, I confess there I had think in gave up, but instead I started to research some references and I found the Lars Von Trier movie and immediately changed the aesthetic of my game to it.

images.jpg

2019-10-19em17h08/em02.jpg

I think this is the best decision I make in the development of this game. At the end I found the game become better than I was planning at the beginning, and I'm very happy with the result.

Before - After

More and more time passes from the beginning of the jam. More and more difficult it is to remember how it all began. On the image below – first day prototype). What we got in the end - play and rate here!) before1.png

space rascals

I released the first post-jam version of my submission cakewalk. It is mostly a graphics update where the placeholder graphics for enemies are replaced by space rascals who are a fish, a shuriken, a flame and a cannon. There are also some graphics effects like a glowing line, explosion and warping level transition. All the updates are additions I wanted to make during the jam but didn't have enough time. They're meant to move the game away from a minimalist, abstract style toward something more substantial which I think makes more sense for the game since it already has a main character. And so now we know what the cake is up against!

rascals.png

These are zoomed in versions of very small 12x12 sprites. I didn't want to increase the size of the enemies because I would have to change the design to deal with new collision parameters, so I just made very small graphics. I like them, but well, they are tiny, and therefore difficult to both see and make. They look a lot better than the original X graphic, though.

cakewalk_0.2.gif

The other graphics additions are effects generated by pygame code. The glowing line uses algorithmic generation to add a random gradient to the line each time a level loads. The portal and explosion are sprites built by looping through position and alpha parameters using ellipses. And the warp is a simple scaling effect that is generated at run time to avoid scaling a large image in real time.

https://youtu.be/cIOE2q2nspA

I started a dev log on itch (with basically the same information), and I also finally made a mac build for 64-bit OS X 10.14 (it should work on other 64-bit versions, but I haven't done a lot of testing for mac)! The OS X build is available on the jam submission page along with Windows and Linux versions.

Quest to Understand Smart and Classic Balance

Hey everyone! So, let me start by saying that this is my first Ludum Dare and it is a pure joy to take part in it :smile:

But on to my rant. I always endeavor to understand stuff I come upon. My husband even makes fun of me that my favorite way of interacting with the world is asking questions :wink: And I tried to understand this Smart and Classic Balance stats, believe me, I tried.

1) At the beginning I believed the provided description and assumed a simple correlation: Classic derived from the amount of ratings you gave, Smart derived from the amount of ratings you gave and the amount of Karma you got. But then I noticed that both those balances change over time with no additional data imputed (no additional ratings or Karma).

2) After analyzing this, I came to a conclusion that both just decay over time. Which would make sense if they are supposed to represent activity. And here I thought that I'm done, I finally figured it out!

But then I noticed these scary things: - High Classic Balance with barely any ratings given, example

high_classic.jpg

  • High Smart Balance with little Karma and quite a bit, but not that many in comparison to my other examples, ratings given

high_smart.jpg

So, how does the above examples compare to those that have many more ratings given, much more Karma and yet much lower balances? For example:

example2.jpg example1.jpg

Can anybody explain this to me? Where do those Balances REALLY come from? Are they simply alien entities beyond my puny human understanding? Will they take over the world when I'm sleeping? :wink: If anybody can tell me how those are actually counted, I will be eternally grateful.

Letter-Based Games

For the theme "Start With Nothing", @rose and I made letter-unlocking dating sim Nothing to Say. We felt pretty clever about our use of the theme: you both start with limited options and have to build from there, and you literally start with the letters NOTHING.

We’re not the only ones to have that idea. I love word games, so I was happy to discover there are lots of other great games about letters/spelling in LD45! Here's some recommendations, in no particular order:

Fantasy interactive fiction where you spell words to open new branches of the story. Cute and funny, and I love the achievements!

You start in a void with an armadillo and have to spell your way out. The game is packed with personality and is tons of fun to play.

A pure spell-as-many-words-as-you-can game with a really fun twist. I found it challenging and super addictive.

Progress through an intriguing fantasy story by manipulating a word to spell a new word. I appreciate that it has hints!

A clever puzzle game where you navigate letters into place to spell words (which become cute little objects!) It's short right now, but a great idea.

  • * Words With Foes * by @hyperscope, @julianbeutel, @KaiClavier, @graebor, and @MattWoelk

Spell words to attack enemies and earn more letters in this super polished RPG. Fun to play and full of great touches like amusing flavor text for letters and enemies.

I posted these recs on Twitter, too. Anyway, I just wanted to share the games I happened to find and enjoy - if I missed a fun letter-based game, let me know!

PIXELART TIMELAPSE

At last, I got around to putting together the timelapse video of my pixelart process for our LD45 entry BOB. In this video you'll see the art and animations of our game taking shape. As reference for my animations I often have a look at tutorials by Pedro Medeiros and Sandy Gordon, so be sure to check them out if you find yourself interested.

You'll also see the creation of various assets that did not end up making it into our game due to a lack of time. (Apparently the game has to work for it to be playable, so that meant less time for features - crazy!) I especially liked my shark sprite, which sadly ended up on the cutting room floor.

Tidepool Postmortem

keyshot.png

Our original Keyshot: To inspire the look we should head in.

5dac98280b968933600707.gif

The final look of the game

So how did we get there? What went right and what went wrong? Well, first we needed to actually program a working prototype. This involved giving they player the ability to move, direct the camera and grab things:

5dac9870b50a6852434347.gif

it was very important to us that the movement feel very fun and that the crab claws behaved in a silly way. This did make the crab a bit difficult to control, which i feel hurt the game in the end, but overall I'm happy with how it turned out :)

Meanwhile, as I programmed, JoltJab was hard at work creating the crab model, rigging it and animating it. woodish modelling.png

After building the prototype, I began work on the environment. Building Environment.png

The lighting was a difficult challenge, because the Unity shadows simply were not behaving in the way I'd hoped. The result was either and extremely dark scene or very janky shadows.

As a solution, I implemented a directional light as the sun with faint shadows and another directional light facing directly up to illuminate the ceiling in purple tones. I set it to not interact with the crab, however. environment2.png

Additionally, I created a shader that made all the objects in the scene emit their own light, so there were no pure-black shadows.

YouSpinMyHeadRightRound.gif

After getting the crab model in and making progress with the environment, we had to squish some bugs where you could climb at super speeds and get out of the hole in the ceiling very quickly, as well as some issues where the crab would turn into a ceiling fan. ;P

Afterwards, everything was working pretty well. I got Jolt's music in, Elysia's seashells and many other fun objects to liven up the tidepool. 5dac9eb5ccc3c705726071.gif

However, there was...

One final issue:

How do you climb on things that you can also drag?

My solution was that large objects could only be dragged by certain points. However, this led to a lot of confusion when the jam ended and it was released. I had to put up a warning for the Jam version:

where to grab.png

As well as a post-jam version in which it was fixed as well as some crucial camera fixes.

Overall, I'm happy with Tidepool. It has its flaws but I think it went very well for someting produced in a weekend. ^_^ If you're interested in trying it out, please head over here:

Neon Void Ratings

Iconem2/em00000_00000.png

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone who's been rating our game! The awesome feedback we're getting will definitely go into the final version!

Also, we've been playing some incredible games, and we can't wait to continue checking out what all of you guys made! Cheers!

Unlock Everything Dev Article #1: Shader-based Transitions

So normally around this time I'd be clamoring for more ratings, but somehow Unlock Everything has already accumulated a whopping 137 ratings despite me not having made many posts about it. So uh...wow. A huge thanks to everyone who played, rated, and enjoyed my game! I guess it's at least eye-catching?

Anyways, as a way to show my appreciation, I'm going to instead kick off a series of write-ups about various aspects of "Unlock Everything". We're starting off with this nifty diamond-based screen transition effect that I implemented using a pixel/fragment shader:

shader-based-transitions.gif

Screen transitions are an important part of making your game look polished! In all of my previous games I've used simple fade-to-black transitions, but I wanted to try a fancier effect this time.

Transitions based on diamond shapes are actually pretty common among games, particularly with an 8-bit or 16-bit aesthetic. Some examples you may be familiar with include Tower of Heaven, Pause Ahead, and A Kitty Dream:

tower-of-heaven.gif a-kitty-dream.gif

I was inspired by these games to try my hand at making a similar effect. I think the end result really adds to the sense of polish that you get, even when first booting up the game.

...

Read the full writeup explaining this transition effect on my website: https://ddrkirby.com/articles/shader-based-transitions/shader-based-transitions.html

Akaban crew is BACK with some post-jam action!

So, we've been reading your feedback and seeing the same few notes again and again - increase the walk speed, make the wires more intuitive, wasn't sure what to do at first, etc - and kinda scratching our heads as to what to do. We know how to fix it, but are hands are tied ... or are they?

Enter the POST JAM version, JAM-PACKED with fixes and little quality of life improvements, while still being fundamentally the same game we initially submitted.

So, come on by and see what you think!

Tricky puzzles await you!

Artwork for Memories of Eleph

Header.png

Hey guys! We are really glad you liked the mood and the art of the game, so we decided to share with you a little bit of the process of the artwork! If you haven't played our game wet, please, check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/45/memories-of-eleph! (and be careful, there are the spoilers below!)

Once we set the central ideia of the game, based on the concept of starting without memory, we tried to define what would be our main character. After some sketches and brainstorming we remembered about the elephant, an animal that have a great memory, and we thought that playing with this contradiction could be interesting! These are one of the first loose and not fancy sketches of the possible characters, and you can see our dear Eleph coming together!

sketchbook.png

The next step was to look up to references for the mood, colors and character design. This was really imporant to set the game art tone!

After that, a basic mockup was created with the first version of Eleph and some placeholder tiles. From this mockup I iterated some color schemes that you can see below. The team choose the third one, and then I modified it a little bit to better suit my taste hehehe

color test.png

Because I had never worked with pixel art for a topdown game before, I learned a lot during the entire jam. I had never created pixel art particles in Unity and I had never made a 4 frame walk cycle before. It was really challenging, but super fun! Here is Eleph cycle in his final shape!

ElephantemAnimations/emTILED.png

I forgot to say that in the beggining we built a list of the art to be done, and it was huge. So we focused on keep things as simple as possible, especially for animation. The enemies, for exemple, have only four frames, moves with an idle animation and are always facing down.

Enemy1_Tile@4x.png

I applied the same thought for the tiles and props of the rooms, but creating variety, corners and patterns got things a little bit confusing and overwhelming. Here is the final screen of the tilemap, props and enemy design file hehehe It's a big mess :sweat_smile:

Pixel Art Mockup.png

Once everything started to come togheter inside the game, we started designing the UI elements and the screens. It was pretty straight forward and fun to do! I searched for a good pixel art font(PixelMix) and aimed for a cleand an simple design, with a pinch of cuteness. These below are some mockups!

01.png

バクラウBloodless | Reusable Code

Hey folks. Hope you're having fun with all the games! I wanted to share a bit about our development process for バクラウBloodless, specially code stuff. Here ya go!

LV03-3Enemies.gif

I thought it would be cool to go over the libraries we used, as well as the modules we developed during the jam. I want to tidy up the stuff we built as separate git projects so anyone can use/contribute to them, but for now they’re all in the(not too tidy) jam repo. Let's go over all this stuff

3rd Party stuff

Unity

I guess I should include this, right? We used Unity 2019.2 . One weird thing about Unity is that it often requires you to build your own systems for stuff like audio, because it's basic audio system is weird. More on that later!

DOTween

For those who don't know DOTween, it's an amazing and easy to use code-driven animation library with a free version. Ever since I've known DOTween, I don't think I've ever had a project where I didn't use it. It's also especially great for jams because of how it allows for a lot of complex behaviours to be implemented super quickly by code, and it allows you to make all of that stuff be event-driven, which I found often leads to better code!

Code from previous projects

We used some code from previous projects, with tweaks to some of them

State Machines

State Machines are super useful(here's a really good text about them if you don’t know them )! I really like our specific implementation. It's pretty straightforward. Here’s what one of its states looks like ``` public class IdleState : PlayerStateBase {

    protected override void Begin()
    {

    }
    public override void FixedUpdate()
    {
        Player.defaultMover.DoFixedUpdate(Player, Player.DirectionInput);
    }
    public override void OnDashPressed()
    {
        ExitTo(new DashState(Player.FacingDirection));
    }

}

And the base class for player states looks like this public class PlayerStateBase : State { protected PlayerController Player { get => Context; }

    public virtual void Update() { }
    public virtual void FixedUpdate() { }

    public virtual void OnDashPressed() { }

    public virtual void OnNoHealth()
    {
        ExitTo(new DeadState());
    }

... ``` One nice thing about how we implemented the state machines is that it doesn't allow you to change, or even access states from outside. This leads you to isolate the state machine logic and communicate through events, which I find to be a good way to make the machine cleaner and easier to debug.

Character Movement

We used a rigidbody-based top-down movement code we had from previous projects. The movement is pretty simple, just a few weird forces that made the movement feel right to me, especially when changing direction. What I really liked was how the movement class is structured:

You create and configure a mover as following. Think of these as movements presets pasted image 0.png Then you Implement a simple interface public interface IMovingChar { public Rigibody2D Rigidbody { get; } public Vector2 FacingDirection { get; } } And you just call the mover every frame mover.DoFixedUpdate(this, input);

This makes it really easy to change the movement style of characters in different modes. We used this a lot with enemies to tweak their walk and attack movement speeds

Object Triggers

Because it's really common for you to have objects that trigger when they collide with an object of a specific type, we had code from previous projects for easy object triggers. You use it by extending this ObjectTrigger generic class and implement the OnTriggered function:

public class SimpleHazard : ObjectTrigger<PlayerController> { protected override void OnTrigger(PlayerController player) { player.OnHit(transform); } } There's also this functionality with the triggers where you can create "proxies", so that you can add "external" hitboxes that are detected as the class they proxy for. I really want to use this one day for a boss where it just has lots of spots where you can hit!!!

``` public class PlayerExtraHitbox: IProxyFor { [SerializeField] private PlayerController player;
public PlayerController Owner { get { return owner; } } } ```
Jam Made Systems
Audio
I always have a hard time using unity's audio system. I just find it super hard to do even simple behaviours with it, and there are a lot of recurring problems, like a sound effect increasing in sound if it's triggered multiple times in the same frame. For all of those reasons, this jam I finally built a little sound system. It's far from perfect, and not very optimized for a big scale game, but it worked pretty well for the jam!
Here's how it’s used: For each individual sound effect in the game, you create a sound effect asset like this. You can configure some stuff in it like what audiomixer group it outputs to, and a minimum play interval so you can stop it from triggering multiple times in a frame unnamed.png Then you add it to the audio database db.png And you can play it in your game either by id or by the asset reference
AudioManager.Instance.Play("transition_end"); Then in the game it just creates the needed audiosources audioplayers.png
Events
We built a nice event system for this game. It uses strings for event ids. I was a bit skeptical about using a system with strings for the events instead of just adding c# events to the each of the game's modules. In the end, I really liked how the string events allowed you to build stuff just through the inspector. I guess in the end both c# events and string-based events can coexist serving different functions!
TriggerManager.StartListening(EventName.OnBossSpawn, OnBossSpawn);
Final Thoughts
So those are the systems we used for building our game. Again, the whole code is available at the project’s repo on GitHub, so if you think any of these could be helpful, feel free to use them!
Unlock Everything Dev Article #2: NES Chiptune Music Structure
This is the second article in a series of writeups. The previous article covered Shader-based Screen Transitions.
I've gotten a lot of positive feedback for the NES-style chiptune soundtrack for Unlock Everything, so I decided to do a writeup breaking down the basics of how these chiptunes are structured. (It's a little easier to do this sort of writeup for chiptunes since they're so limited compared to more fully-featured tracks)
Unlock Everything Original Soundtrack (medium).png
The soundtrack for Unlock Everything consists of chiptune tracks in the style of the original NES. Here's a sample track so you know what it sounds like.
This is the music for the second level of the game, titled "Face Your Destiny", and is my personal favorite out of the entire OST. In this writeup we'll be dissecting the different components of this track to see how it all comes together, as well as discussing some arrangement techniques involved in each section.
pulse.png
Before I go into the actual sounds used in the track, I should point out that the first thing I did when starting this song was decide on a rough tempo to compose at. I settled on 150BPM for this track, because I wanted it to have a lot more energy than the music for level 1 (100BPM) but a little less than level 3 (180BPM). This would give the soundtrack a sense of progression that matched the intensity of the gameplay.
...
Read the full writeup breaking down this song on my website: https://ddrkirby.com/articles/nes-chiptunes-unlock-everything/nes-chiptunes-unlock-everything.html
On Dumpy, and his Glitchy Quest for Crap
We've been hearing that our game, Dumpy's Quest for Crap, has some movement issues across the board, ranging from moving too slow, to accelerating too fast, to getting stuck in the air if you stop pressing buttons.
That's not ideal, but what's done is done... and after looking into solutions, the things we've learned are going to end up improving all of our work going forward, so it's a net positive.
If you're curious what Dumpy's quest was supposed to look (and play) like, here's a quick clip I put together.
