My process might be wrong:
- Think about ideas
- Discard main idea
- Be inspired by some squiggles
- Start writing out the design, thinking about the tech
- Make joke in IRC
- Start making game based on said joke
- Program
- Design
- Sound
- Program
- ???
- Profit!
I wasn’t to thrilled about the theme at first, I didn’t have an idea that was at least 1/16th unique…So I spent the first two hours or so attempting to come up with an idea that didn’t involve escaping from a compound. My winning idea was: Escape from an Abstract Painting.
I wanted to have the “painting” generate itself at random, with a number of different lines and squiggles in a variety of colors that would indicate the difficulty level. I have four different colors right now, I may add more as I develop the gameplay tomorrow.
The Gameplay will be simple, the intention is that this would be an easy to play Zen like game. So…no fly mouse and keyboards while playing 😛
I’m participating in the LD and hoping to finish in time with a playable game I decided to change my original plan and focus on a game that will be fun to make and most importantly enjoyable to play.
My inspiration is RogueLike games but I want something that is not turn based.
Good luck everyone.
Technical details:
I’m using FlashDev and AS3.
Welcome to the world of audio. It’s really not all that difficult it’s just tedious if you don’t know where you’re gonna go with your ideas.
Currently have two pieces done for the game. Working on character themes for everyone and then onto actual sound design (sfx, etc).
Coffee is your best friend. MIDI is your favorite tool.
As I’m jamming, i’ve spend the first hour since waking just thinking about the idea and setting up a project, checked the art path etc.
Lightwave 10.1 used with a script to cut a 3D model into tiles for the isometric renderer
Haxe and FlashDevelop the lingo and IDE
Existing frameworkd (closed source at the mo) being tested
Now to go from vague thoughts to a full idea and get into it proper.
Time for my first break! After five hours of good solid work, I’ve got a great understanding of the story and some thoughts about the game’s visual style. Anyway, here’s a working prototype of my progress so far. That camera was a royal bitch, but gosh darnit, she’s a-working! Flash AS3 Profession IDE, CS5.5
So, I’ve gone with the cell puzzle. The idea being you have to get your prisoner out of each cell without waking sleeping guards and pushing the appropriate switches to open the doors.
Just paused the timelapse recorder to take a quick breather. So far, it’s going ok, my home grown graphics arn’t the worst and the game features list seem to be growing into something um… gamey.
After a bit of fiddling round with some viewport setting code (or lack of viewport setting code..), got my intermediate RT working, and got a simple texture working. I’m wanting to use this to render patterns to, and have the vortex render it back with some kind of kaleidoscope effect. No effect yet, but the framework is there. I think it’s time to start working on some mechanics, instead of being drawn into the graphics too much. I’ve still got procedural music to do yet >_<

kaleidoscope...without the mirrors.
I hope it’s not late to post this but I guess I’m in. I silently attended to last 3 LD’s under my own rules and time limit : ) . Let’s see If I can finish something tomorrow.
After hearing the theme I thought for a while about different kinds of escape games: escaping a prison, escaping a dull day through reading books, escaping reality… but in the end I decided on a simple falling out of a plane and then surfing style escape called SurfN-2-Sur5. I made a rough prototype of a similar game about a year ago, but never really did anything with it. Using what I learned from the surfing gameplay and adding the escape theme should lead to an interesting game.

Well, more than 5 hours into the competition and it’s time for a progress update.
The game will be a very simple adventure game called “Still Dreaming”. I’m mainly interested in creating a piece of art that also has game elements. This won’t be the typical game, but more something to just enjoy and maybe get a good laugh out of. My main goal is to create an atmosphere surrounding the game that sucks the player into the dream world.
You’re playing as a character called “Kyle” through a set of abstract / simple puzzles trying to escape your dream. The game will hopefully reveal how you got caught in this bizarre place.
That’s the basic idea. Oh dear, there’s much to get done.
Here’s a screenshot of my progress so far:
I spent most of the first few hours working out a game concept and then setting the visual style. The visual style is heavily inspired by the amazing Sword & Sworcery. I just fell in love with the style and always wanted to try something similar.
For now all you can do is walk around. That’s it
Now I just gotta turn this into a game. I need coffee.
I am going to be using my own PixelEngine in C++ which helps out for handling of objects and drawing of those. It is only in alpha, but it works.
Yeah baby, this moustache is all like, flying and stuff. He flies around. And he is a moustache. How much more awesome could it get?

OK, I waited for the theme to drop before going to bed, and fell asleep to the sweet tunes of an over excited cat trying to fight my face. (Which is one of the more violently cute experiences.).
Now I’m awake, and I think I have a neat idea, so I’m going to breakfast, go get a return on my keyboard (I bought a keyboard for LD, but I really don’t like the layout, which is a problem since I bought because I don’t like the laptop keyboard layout), and get cracking.
My (lack of) progress along with some sweet music will be streamed at www.livestream.com/drjarajski . It’s up, but I won’t be there yet.
