You Have to Save Everyone but There Isn’t Much Time!

Here’s what a not-quite-final version of my entry looks like.  The game is fully playable and probably won’t change a whole lot now in the 8 hours or so that are left.

YHtSEbTIMT screem

You can try it here.

I also figured that a hey let’s playtest each other’s games mailing list would probably be cool to have?  link.

It doesn’t seem to be loading for me 😮 Are you using a progress event in the preloader, by any chance?
24. May 2009 · 17:28 UTC
Yes. Shoot, now I’m getting it too. I will try and fix that. Thanks!
24. May 2009 · 17:30 UTC
I’ve had that problem before too :/ You can just use the usual enterframe event to fix it though, and use something like this to get your percentage loaded:
24. May 2009 · 17:33 UTC
er, not that you asked, sorry :/ I just remember that particular flash bug driving me crazy when I encountered it…
24. May 2009 · 17:48 UTC
I think it’s fixed. There seemed to be some issue with my FTP program, making the file bigger every time I reuploaded.

Punch the Red Ones Only

Punch the Red Ones Only screenshot

I fortunately have no real experience with domestic violence, so it is more on my feelings about people treating the ones they love poorly.  Just general misdirected meanness.

Early today I decided I hated how the game was turning out and gave up.  Then later, a friend said something encouraging and I had to come back and at least get it presentable and post it.

I enjoyed the moment where I accidentally punched a green one because it was harder to tell the difference. However, the next play through, it became apparent that the red ones would die if you just walked into them, but the green ones didn’t. So that was a bit of a design flaw there.
30. Jun 2009 · 18:50 UTC
Hehehe, really clever actually. I like it. The more violent you get, the more likely you are to hurt those you care about.
22. Aug 2009 · 22:02 UTC
This is deeply, deeply fantastic. Of the entries I managed to play from this compo it’s by far my favorite — and yet, is subtly disturbing.

Brickplacer

Brickplacer screen

Well, I had the start of an idea, but then never really figured out where to go with it.  It could have come out worse, I guess, but I really feel like I should be better at this by now.

In the future, I think I will actually spend time figuring out how I want the game to work instead of going with something extremely vague and getting right into implementing something before I know what I want.

Live and learn, I guess.

I like that you can’t collect coins, you have to “guide” the other character into getting them. That’s a neat idea.

Some neat ideas, obviously could have used more design (characters that crawl up the sides of the bricks like slugs instead? I dunno.)

LD15

Framework for the upcoming LD

Looking over the rules here, I see that I’m supposed to declare my custom libraries ahead of time!

From the MiniLDs I’ve done, I’ve built up a little bit of a framework in Actionscript 3 that I think I’ll be using again for LD 15.

I’ve put it on Google code, so you can browse it online here or grab it from svn with something like this:

svn checkout http://meyermike.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/ meyermike-read-only

It’s not too fancy, but it has been quite handy for the kinds of things I’ve been making lately.  I didn’t make any documentation for setting it up or using it yet, but if anyone is interested in using it, just let me know and I can do that.

No time for thinking of a good title!

Oh my goodness there’s no way I can keep up with the amount of posts and comments this site is getting! It’s awesome that so much awesome is awesoming here so awesomely.

Awesome.

So my update.

TitleScreen

Looks way better in motion. Click it!

Turns out that Flash doesn’t really likethe way I am doing 2.5D, but eventually I got the framerate to be a consistent 30.

Postmortem of Saturday:
I’m doing it wrong:

  • Too much Mtn Dew.
  • Not sleeping when my body is telling me I need it.
  • Maybe concentrating too much on the visuals. I always spend a lot of time tweaking things like colors and animation speeds.
  • Normally I’d say AS3/Flex is great for LD, but I think that for this game concept I’d have been better off dusting off Code::Blocks and using some SDL/OpenGL.  A lot of time was lost to getting Flash to cooperate and the quality of the game is definitely suffering.

I’m doing it right:

  • Never seen a Flash game that looks anything like this!
  • Nap!  I seem to be like 10x more productive now.
  • Excited about the game concept!
  • It’s kind of fun!

Basically I am ripping off the Wario Ware Inc. microgame Ninja Pipe Cleaner. Which you can see a video of here.

You can see my last upload here.   I’ll be uploading updates there occasionally.

Framework declaration:

So you guys can keep me honest, I just put the current version of the crappy framework I’ll be using up on BitBucket:  http://bitbucket.org/excitemike/stego/

I’ll be using that, FlashDevelop, Photoshop, Sfxr, and maybe this.

I cannot wait to start!

Done…

I was really happy with my game from the previous Ludum Dare.  Not so much this time.

The idea here was to have a bunch of teensy games showing a variety of game mechanics and have them arranged in a big grid you can browse.  Unfortunately I didn’t get working on the actual games until very late in the compo.  Somehow I managed to lose a lot of time on the UI for browsing them even though it doesn’t look that complicated.

I guess I knew going into it that the idea was going to be terribly hard to pull off in 48hrs, but stupidly kept going with that idea instead of the others I had.

I guess I still finished a playable, silly platformer with five levels in 48 hours, and that’s still an accomplishment.  :)

I look forward to reviewing the timelapse once I put it together and take a look at how the time was really spent.  Should be educational.

LD16 MEGA DOWNLOAD

I will soon be spending Christmas vacation in a land where non-dial-up internet access is somewhat hard to come by.  So to prepare, I have downloaded offline copies of almost all the games.  Now that I’ve put that together, it occurs to me that maybe others would like that?  If one giant download of (almost) all the LD16 games would be useful to you, you can get all 327 delicious megabytes of it here.

I think there are only 2 games that I couldn’t get working offline copies of.  One was Linux only and the other looked like it would be nontrivial to steal from Kongregate.  For all the games whether I could rip them or not, the folder contains shortcuts to that game’s page on ludumdare.com.

EDIT:  Link fixed.  Thanks, Jonny D!

Precompo declarations, photos.

Framework:  This Stego AS3 framework thing that I’ve accumulated over the last several months:  http://bitbucket.org/excitemike/stego/

IDE: FlashDevelop. compiling with mxmlc.

Music: I’m thinking WarioWare DIY, then recorded and edited in GoldWave.

Graphics: A copy of Photoshop CS 1 which as far as you know was obtained completely legitimately.

Sound Effects: I bet you can guess this one.

Will be listening to: Switching Pandora between a DragonForce station and a station based on music from movie montages (on which the Transformers: The Movie (animated) soundtrack comes up often! :) ).

For timelapse: I will be using Keeyai’s Chronolapse on account of it’s awesomeness.

At this point I think I’m going to try a kind of offbeat movement scheme combined with grabbing and throwing things.  I’m not sure those things combine well, but I guess I’ll find out!

Declaring Framework

Hmm, I’m trying to make a blank project with your stego framework and keep getting errors. I already have FLashDevelop, Flex, debug player, and Python so I simply ran the makeproject.py script, and opened the created project with flashdevelop. Initially hitting compile gave an error because I had a Main.as file with class ProjectName. I renamed the file to ProjectName.as I then needed to change an import in SamplePlayer from stego.PlatformCharacter to stego.gameobject.PlatformCharacter. It’s now giving me errors about there being no SceneLayer when there is a Scene. Perhaps I’m missing something?
