Bad Theme, Good Theme... Whatever We Shall Have Fun!

The dispute between different opinions during theme selection is always inevitable. In my experience I found that there are always two types of creators:

1) Coders - These people focus on the gameplay, they don't care much about the visuals or story, they simply want to challenge their coding skills. So they are happy to have a theme that creates a coding challenge for them like "You can use only one button".

2) Storytellers - These guys will make a story even out of pure technical themes. They focus on the mood/art of the game and their mechanics are not that innovative. They prefer open minded themes that are not too strict so they can use their imagination as much as possible.

Neither of these people are bad they are simply different.

Adventure Game Studio anyone?

Hey guys, I just wonder. Is there anyone Working in Adventure Game Studio?

Can Someone Explain This Theme?

This is not a complaint, I honestly don't understand what it means, and as someone who always interprets themes as stories (not gameplays), I wanna know what you think about this:

Each playthrough builds on the last

Too much art, no coding. Screw me!

If I spent my time on coding as much as I spent on animations and art, I would have made ten games now!

72 hours? 48 hours?! 24 hours?!! ... Pfff, I prefer 12!

What are the odds that my friend's wedding date is the same weekend as LD? Mathematically quite high actually... Anyway, I will probably participate but only on Sunday, so it gives me about 12 hours for work, when I take sleep, family matters and other stuff in consideration.

With me luck.

Anyone Making Point-n-Click Adventure Game?

Hello there!

I just wonder if there is anyone who is making a classic adventure game for Ludum Dare.

Do you think it is a good idea to make this kind of game in a jam that is mostly good for fast paced action/arcady games?

That is basically my only genre I do, so I wonder how others feel about it.

Let me know.

Suggestion For Admins - Previous Themes List

Hello there @pov and everyone,

I was thinking, it would be great if we had something like "List of previous LD themes" somewhere on the site, so people can see which themes were used in the past.

I mean, I don't mind doing anything, but I think it's more fun to see themes that have never been here before. I can't count how many times I've seen Floating islands (this is already a meme at this point), Small World, and so on.

I don't blame those who suggest these things, as I think they do so, because they simply don't know that these themes were used e.g. two years ago. If this was my first LD I would probably be also like "Oh yeah, 'Small World' sounds really cool!"

Comon guys...

Ok, I kinda understand when someone suggests a theme that was used five years ago... But last LD? Seriously?

I think people are just trolling at this point

Pseudo Wallpaper

Haven't been pixelarting for quite some time. Just something to easy the hype for upcoming event.

Amazing themes

I know this is highly subjective, but I love these!

Can't Wait!

Oh boy, it's Christmas again!

I wasn't able to participate in the last LD, so I'm hyped even more.

I will be using these:

Engine: Adventure Game Studio (AGS) - Probably the last person in the galaxy using this.

Graphics: Photoshop

Sound: Haven't decided yet. Any tips for someone who has literally zero sound/music knowledge. Something easy to work with.

I can't take it anymore!!!

More than fifteen hours to go. That's too long. I can't wait that long.

But what if I freeze myself...

Typical European Morning Anxiety

Aaah sweet Saturday LD morning. When you barely read the theme with you eyes half closed and there are people posting their cool prototypes already.

Well let's start working!

First Room Almost Ready

Well, it took me about 4 hours... I hope I won't waste too much time on this.

The Legend Of Sky Stones - READY TO PLAY

Hi guys, so I guess I'm finished.

A short fantasy story about a hermit writer who walks the land and writes books about legends. This time he goes to visit Highmountain land to write about the Sacred SKY STONES.

Legend of Skystones - to be continued?

As I was writing the story for my entry, I kinda had an idea of a larger world than just these three locations. So I wonder what others think and whether it would be interesting to have some sequel/prequel story.

I will be happy for any feedback given. Thanks.

Annual LD Theme Drama - HERE I GO!

As always there is this drama regarding the theme voting. And as always there are tons of "too specific" themes, "movie references" or "too shallow themes".

This year, however, we face this new trend of coronavirus overuse. Here are my thoughts on that: I personally don't want to do a game about this theme, because I simply am not interested in it. On the other hand flagging this theme is rather aggressive behavior, because if you think about it, those 1000 people suggesting this theme did not expect another 1000 people do the same. So just because you are angry for seeing the same theme over and over again doesn't mean you should punish individuals.

The most important thing is to have fun, so let's have fun no matter what theme we have.

(PS: but seriously guys, do we really want to have such restrictive theme such as "one specific illness"? Do we really want to play the same kind of game 100 times in the voting phase? Just something to think about)
