Ludum Dare 51

When things go wrong , but fail successfully.

A quick recap of having to 'cheat' and use Blender for the animations instead of the pixel art, and somehow, it worked out looking okay.

Play / Rate HazCat ( web )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iYL_k2B930

How it started

It began as a Penguin on ice, but evolved thanks to Apple's OS update ruining the Photoshop save dialog and through shenanigans losing a bunch of art progress.

it's now a Cat in a Hazmat suit, in a sewer / nuclear power station.

Last day ~ ish

I forgot to actually publish some of the stuff I added, I guess soon :grimacing:

More wall-jump, more slime, new interactive stuff , and more retro 90's style title screens.

Play HazCat ( Web / HTML 5 etc..)

And since it's odd that , after adding all this other stuff to the game, he still doesn't have a tail, I quickly modelled, animated and rendered some frames out of blender so he has a wave tail that trails in the air when he falls/jumps etc.

Going for broke

This may fail on day 1 but here we go - 3d .

Day1.jpg

Dunning-Kruger effect in full swing.

I thought I'd be able to make something in Unity but am stumbling with most of the basics ( I can't even get things to import with the correct pivot points from blender)

Anyway - here's the first abandoned 10 hours or so!

Cake > Pie.

The rat is going stealth hiding inside a burger bun, but no time to explain.. titlecakeeee.jpg

Isometric tile traversal and orientation

Am working on a post-compo version that addresses the confusing movement in isometric. I my wife had to turn the keyboard 45° to get the hang of the movement.

I also plan to add mobile controls, a second rat, a title screen, a story etc.

On the grid

Figured out how to highlight line of sight to cake ( I'll make it look nicer , this is just the debug art ) , now to figure out the broken cake train, and add another rat behind the cat to pass the cakes to.

Rats

Finally adding the rat buddy on the floor, so it makes sense why you're pushing cakes off onto the floor.

Overboard?

Any other construct users out there? Has anyone else come up with a more elegant solution for pushing contiguous lines of tiles ?

Are you using arrays , or just collision testing within a loop?

Am currently working on a system to assign all tiles a binary # based on possible tiles that allow movement , testing if blocked or not, then another array to test move vector against that. Any that have input velocity impart that down the chain, and once a tile without anything blocking it is found, the entire set moves..

Am probably under/over thinking it.

Can share the .capx if anyone's interested!

Relates to this isometric ratburger cake pushing cat game:

One Step back for Two steps forward - Rat Burger Cake Sweeper v2.0

Thanks to R0J0hound for helping me solve a mental roadblock trying to figure out Cake Trains in Isometric. :sob:

Am reworking the game from scratch almost, to have a 2d layout that's rendered in Isometric 3d, as it makes more sense. I made a huge rod for my back with maths and converting between to do enemy proximity and stuff. If I do the calculations in 2d space and just RENDER to Isometric, should be a breeze!

Added some polish to the LD 52 entry

I rushed the actual compo version as I only had inspiration on the last day.

This is a more, fully realised version than that which I thought I could achieve in the last 16 hours of the compo! :id:

Hopefully the theme, intention is clearer than the original

I asked the chatbot to predict a theme based on the prior 57* themes

I tried pinning it down to one pick, but it would only give "Shelter" or "Limited Visibility" as it's most likely options.

My prediction is based on trying to pick the worst concept of the bunch, be-it something just specific enough to create a bunch of clone games going for the most generic interpretation , or something super specific, and therefore difficult to expand upon/be original with.

Uh oh..

Thanks to @jesus-gonzalez for the poll ( vote on it here : https://strawpoll.com/polls/NMnQ5RoA1n6 )

It now agrees with my pick  "Your health bar is more than just a health bar"

Yes, with the additional information of the poll results, my prediction for which theme will win tomorrow has changed. Based on the poll results, the top three themes in order of votes received were: "Your health bar is more than just a health bar," "Strange machines," and "Cartography." Therefore, I believe that "Your health bar is more than just a health bar" is the most likely theme to win tomorrow.

Actually 10 years this year :D

My first entry was into the Minimalism ( bonus Potato ) back in 2013 . I managed to make a timeline in blender to show each one over the years. I think since 2020 I've not missed one!
