EFTToED – Post Mortem

A short Post-Mortem on my third try at a Ludum Dare compo. I made 3 level long adventure-puzzle game called “Escape From The Temple of Eternal Dooom”.

Click to try out my game!

What went right:

  • Preparation / Tools  - I knew which tools (engine, media creation / generators) I wanted to use, and kept the weekend appointment-free.
  • Theme – While not as instantly-inspiring as some other themes, it was a bonanza compared to the last theme. (‘Minimalism’)
  • Sound - I am not a sound engineer, or even that musically inclined, but had good fun creating a simple but effective ‘dun dun duunnn’ background tune in SunVox, and recorded my first ever sound effects (footsteps and a whip sound). I did not have sound in my last LD game and that was a major flaw, so glad I improved there.
  • Humor - I like to be funny (or pretend to be), and I had a lot of hooks in my game to reference silly things and have fun with the theme. (a pseudo Indiana Jonesy setting, with a snarky hero)
  • Art - Inkscape has been a excellent tool for me in the past (drew fun detailed DnD location maps with it). It allows me to do a ‘simple but effective’ style that I can do a lot in with not much time. And scalable stuff rules!
  • Concept - Loved my base mechanics and concept (you plan your hero moves, each move costs time, and you only have 10 seconds to reach the next door, or be reset), I could easily expand into whatever I wanted.
  • Planning / Time Management - While not perfect, I stuck to my planning of having the ‘concept’ done on Saturday and polish on Sunday. ‘Polish’ here being ‘adding two levels’. But I did not spend too much time on unnecessary things, stopped trying to perfect ‘ok’ things, and moved on. Could still be improved, but hey, what can’t?

What went wrong:

  • Difficulty – Allowing the player to discover and slowly get into the mechanics of the game would have been best. But I started off rough (you really had to ‘get it’ all for the first level), and it kept at that difficulty level while introducing new elements. I fear that not many got to the end. More hints, more playing, gentler curve.
  • UI – Not necessarily the graphical part, but I was missing some functionality for the players. A ‘remove all actions’ button was oft-requested. Making it very clear that you can pause the game during move repeats would have been good too. Maybe add keyboard shortcuts.
  • Physics Not Pausing – I used Unity’s physics engine to do collapsible floor tiles for room 2 of the game, but due to a short-sighted ‘oh they will get past that if they try a few times’, the physics kept running during pause. That breaks a game rule I set up in Room 1, and makes it more difficult to boot.
  • Lighting - Not from my own experience, but people were complaining that it was too dark. I think it was an important part of the game to keep it really dark, and have light be a proper resource, but I fear that technically, the lighting might look different on peoples rigs. (environment, monitor, OS differences)

I really enjoyed making this LD entry, and I think the results are an improvement over my previous efforts. I am still quite enthusiastic about the premise and concept of the game, and am seriously considering turning it into a ‘real’ game project.

Daring to Play once again~!

Lets get in on this thang again~

Weekend is reserved, and Jod will be joining again too.  (for two solo compo’s)

My tools:

What I want to do better / try:

  • Maybe try out the new Unity2D stuff (gotta test that before)
  • Condense my ideas to a smaller concept – try going for a strong core, then expand
  • Set aside more ‘playtest’ time
  • Pray for a good theme

I leave you here with an image from a Post-Compo version-in-the-works of the last Ludum Dare game I made! :)

Post Compo LD#27

Europe Awakens…

*yawn*

Goood morning!

*looks at theme*

Noooooo, thats not what I wanted~ *arrrrr*
I was hoping for something with, you know, actual flavour. Not just a mechanic.

Hmmm ok, time to engage inspiration zen-mode. Take the theme lightly, as a hint. Make whatever you like… chase the ideas!

*stares at monitor*

I need more coffee…

A rush & A game : Azimuth Zero

A long rush in the end… trying to make too much game in not that much time.

screen2

So meet Azimuth Zero!

Happy with the look, less so with my planning / the resulting gameplay.

(because I had to cut some things, and had no real time for balancing)

One-day Jam~

This LD weekend I do not have much time, but I am still going to try to get one day in. Considering that I made my ideas too big the last four times, a one day LD will be a supreme challenge!

The theme-possibilities look awesome this time though.

My usual tools:

Sprint-Dare!

cb76ec7a60891c0f7d5aa37efcc4c145Sooo, going to try to make a game in 14 hours, from now on end. Theme is good, no time to waste – wish me luck! :D

GL to ye all already daring, and GL to ye all who might still enter!

Sprint-Dare: 3 Hours in

Quick check in for my 14-hour LD sprint

  • Concept was fleshed out in half an hour – thank you inspiring-for-once theme!
  • First graphics smashed on screen
  • First UI bits added
  • Title thingy added. Cus titles matter, yo.

Onwards, quickly – only 11 hours remain!

screenshot-1

It is done. 14 Hours is possible.

Pfew, 14 sure is less than 48, but still got something done, even with a crash that made me remake stuff for an hour or two.

I introduce “Dig or Die” a somewhat dark/somber post-apocalyptic game:
Survive in the bare tundra, after the rest of the world has nuked each other to pieces.

Game mechanics / UI clarity not 100%, but ok enough. Music literally made in a few minutes.

Now sleep.

Mini-LD 53 – Team JoDa will compete!

In the last bunch of LDs, me & my bud Jod have both been making our own solo-games, but doing so in the same location/room for social support & pressure. Cuz we like doing our own thing.

Yet we wondered how a Team effort would work out, and agreed to try that next LD, with a tryout to see if we would not bash each others (creative) brains out in such a process. 😉

So lo-and-behold there is a Mini-LD planned next weekend! Great fortuitous batmans!

Re-LudumDare #2 – Build, Raid & Rule

So I have been doing my second Re-LD (doing old LD themes in LD-comp time), an this is my progress on #2!

Theme:
Construction / Destruction

Concept:
You are a starting barbarian ruler, and you plan to build a grand castle!
Who has to pay for the expenses? Well, time to squeeze the peasants & raid the neighbors!
But at the end of the year they will come for revenge. But your castle should withstand that, no?

Mechanics:
2D Terraria-block craftyish, placing structures over blocks (throne rooms, doors), or outdoors (soldier tents).
Mobs/soldiers move in clumps and fight whatever they bump into (opponents, doors, etc) – if they get to the throne room / command tent you are dead!

Progress:
Started yesterday afternoon (CET, about 24 hours ago). Doing well, a bit short on time (I have got about 3-4 hours to go, maybe 8 if I shuffle some).
Engine: Unity3D, primarily in 2d mode. Most art is mine, only the wood/stone textures are free stuff, and NGUI for UI.

Todo:
Finish basic fight mechanics, balance them a bit. Then hopefully add some archers / more complex opponent units.

MiniLD53 – Team JoDa kicks off!

This is the first time we (Jod & I) are doing an LD together, been doing compo’s separately, but decided to kick of some real Team Action!
Also the first time that we participate in a MiniLD, but that shouldn’t matter much. We’re keeping to Jam-rules within Compo time.

Concept:
The theme is pretty OK! Unlike some LDs I saw good possibilities immediately. But with two people it takes more time to crystalize one. We looked to combine our strongest points: Storytelling (Jod) & Simulation (Joror).
We settled on a time-travel game where you try to prevent a worldwide apocalypse! You can make three small changes to the timeline, and see how that impacts the world over a 100 years, hoping to prevent the Bad Stuff(tm). A mix of simulation of world-powers & storytelling events to steer the outcome, and a protagonists’ perspective to boot!
So what happened 100 years ago? Well that was when the first human Awakened.

Work work work:
First thing: time is limited, ideas are grand. They collide. So we work hard and cut where we can at first. And key to that is a good work environment! Did I mention it is over 30 degrees (86 Fahrenheit for the imperialists ;)) over here and we’re in a loft appartment?

LD30

I am in! LD#30

In for my 6th Ludum Dare! My tools are:

  • Engine: Unity3D
  • Graphics: Photoshop / Inkscape
  • GUI: NGUI (or try the new UGUI in Unity3D 4.6 Beta)
  • Sound effects: SunVox / sfxr / Audacity
  • Music: SunVox / www.abundant-music.com / FL Studio / I-don’t-kn0w-music-is-hard…
  • Other potential stuff: Poly2Tri for lots of rasterization tricks, my mini Unity3D tool-belt class collection

Will aim for a Compo entry, but I got the monday off as well, so an option to slide to Jam is available if I need another day. 😀

Setsbacks & not finished! Making it a Jam~

This LD I had a very unproductive first day, which set me back and put a dampener on my spirits. I wasn’t satisfied with the looks and kept re-doing things.

But a good nights sleep & Sunday turned that around for me again – Still liked my concept and found inspiration in a slightly adjusted background & story which I could fit in.

Alas, even with a day of hard work, the re-hashing of the visuals cost so much time that I did not finish in Compo-time, so I am going to make it a Jam, and see how far I get.

Indentured Exile – Teaser:

You are sent through the gate with just some food and a scattering of tools. Criminal exile: it is an dump & forget solution, but they may be light at the end of several gates!
Survive in alien lands and keep your not-so-savory workers in line, while you progress through increasingly harsher worlds.

Progress so far

Mystery! Hexes! Colors!

Euro-belated ‘I am in!’ + theme grumbling

Time to execute!

Was already planning to join, but forgot to chime in – using:

  • Unity3D
  • Inktscape
  • Audacity
  • + usual suspects from previous LDs

Unfortunately my regular Ludum Dare pal Jod is inconvenienced the first day due to Sinterklaas~ hope he’ll join in with his own LD game tomorrow.
No such saintly-present occupations for me tho! So going in with LD for the compo.

The theme is… interesting. While I do not like mechanic themes in general, this one has some ok potential. In that sense it is a very light theme, mostly prohibiting certain type of ‘big’ scope game views – which is something that you don’t want to do in LD much either.

But to make this a bit more flavour-directional, I am selecting a sub-theme for myself from the other Final themes.
Thought of three game concepts, and picked on to execute on before 1200 CET, so kind-of on schedule. Subtheme of that game: Machines.

TIME TO EXECUTE!

LD32

Morning check-in

Semi-belated ‘I am in’ + ‘omg theme’ post:

As suspected ‘Companion’ & ‘An unconventional weapon’ made the top 3 – not quite in the order I expected, but I’ll work with it 😀

Current mood: Sadness – My co-LD-er Jod is sick today and can’t participate! I will miss our back-n-forth and idea-bouncen’ :'(

Current activity: brainstorming w/ caffeine

Weapons of choice: Unity 5, Inktscape, Photoshop & Mah brain

LD33

Progress! Nombeast in action.

Just 8 hours into the LD for me! (not much time on Saturday)

So I’ll keep it at this screenshot of my floating nombeast terrorising some poor people in their floating rock village:

Screen Shot 2015-08-23 at 14.23.49

Short term todo: Nombeast attacks, Villager behaviour, Complete village

Longer term todo: Add more clouds (refuel for your ‘gas’), add some birds

Wishlist todo: Mama nombeast giving you an introduction, non-violent quests, birdhunting

LD34

I’m in for a demi-weekend!

Forward!

This weekend I’ll have about 1.2 days of time to spend on le Ludum Dare! (woe me, never a full weekend anymore…)

I will try to compensate a bit by doing some one-day exercise games this week.

Tools:

  • Engine: Unity3D
  • Pixels: Photoshop
  • Vectors & art: Inkscape
  • Sound  & editing: Audacity
  • Music: always my weak point… will try Bosca Ceoil again I think (but looking for better off-the-cuff music makers/generators)
