Remedy of All is done!

Well this time I really feel like I made a neat game. This was my first jam. Did 4 compos before this. And extre time + graphics help really pays off.

After posting this I’ll write the description on entry page but here is my game.

Remedy of All: Experience Post

Here comes my long (I dont want to call these post-mortem) experience post about my LD game: Remedy of All.

The Timelapse

This was my FIRST JAM ENTRY. But I had 4 compos before. And difference is huge.
I got music, most of the text, and graphics from others and that time added to + 24 hours is just GREAT.
I did code most of the game cleanly and had enough time for coding conditionals for ending(s). I thank each one of them for their support.

I want to go step by step on each topic.

Theme

I did woke up to my alarm and looked at the theme. Which was kinda my favorite but also had no idea for a game. And returned to sleeping because 4 AM.
In the morning while waiting for my friend(graphics) to wake up I had a phone call with another friend of mine and he gave me the idea. If that didn’t happen I’d go for an JRPG and utterly fail to finish it probably. Then I dumped all of the ideas on a text file here (Which Is in our native language btw.). Then we decided on this idea. Sick people comes in in a window and you craft cures on another window. But at first the idea was making items silly and disgusting a bit probably. And had much more complexity. But I am happy we left those behind and finished the game as it is.

My first concept sketch thing. It’s pretty normal If you can’t read it.

Coding (ScriptableObject in Unity)

For my game I needed 3 editable data holders. For items: Name, Danger Level etc. For crafts: Items and waiting times in order, resulting item. For Ilnesses: name, symptoms, curing items.
I learned about Scriptable objects(how to create them, how to code custom editors for them.). And at this point I didn’t think much about UI. At least until before I stuart with sickness data object. A screenshot from those times. Only the UI and placeholders. Which are my spare time drawings btw. Just found them on the desktop and used for item images.

Total Gameplay (Still no graphics)

After day 2 code was almost ready. The thing left was coding the Lookup Book. At this point you can see the gameplay with paint.net drawn graphics. About this time I contacted Carlos for a background music. Which is the first time I’m asking someone to make music for my jam game. And another friend of mine helped by finding the sickness data and symptoms. Which also gave me more time to focus on coding.

Last afternoon

was the time where I started getting the graphics into the game. I replaced each placeholder one by one and made the UI look old-ish. My thanks for another friend who found the font Roman_SD, which looked great with this concept. I have no other screenshot because game looks the same after this point.

Endings (Spoilers)

My game doesn’t follow the theme directly if you don’t count the ending. Which is really COOL. At least I think that way. There are 2 different endings which you’re supposed discover the second one after finishing the game once. (Seen those Rods in the crafting book? They are about the ending which is the reason you don’t have the Crystal Gem at the start.) I wish we had time for some illustrations for each one of the endings but game only has some text explaining what happens after you actions. But to give an idea of what’s gonna happen here is a character from the game.

Ain’t he cool!

In the end I did code the ending ang got the background music packed the game and uploded. I’m pretty happy about this one and I can see my improvement by comparing this game with older ones.

I am in!

Hey, 6th time for me I think. Gonna use Unity. I might do this one with my team but It’s not certain. Good Luck to everyone! Just participate guys.

GOT THE IDEA!

It’s almost 12 Hours and I just found my idea. It’s like Wolfied but instead of enemies there is household items floating around and you need to cut out rooms with specific idems for each customer (Its a HOTEL!) in the line. I wish I could explain more but gotta go fast. Good luck to everyone!

All right. Turns out I have a problem.

I have been coding a bit reckless and now it turns out I need to somewhat rewrite all of that. COOL! But after a break.
