I’m in (are we supposed to say this)

Hello there. It will be my first time here. I will use unity as engine and Photoshop CS2 (yeah old but does the thing). And how do you guys make sound anyway. I will probably use some open-source jam sound stuff. I hope I’ll be able to make something playable. Could someone give me some tips? Like do I have to register to somewhere before the theme reveal? And stuff for beginners will also appreciated. Thanks!

Streaming as a Newbie

I have decided to make a stream on my first ludum dare jam attempt. I have used unity several times on very little projects but have strong programming knowledge. And i can draw simple characters with my tablet and photoshop. It’s lonely here :(. Right now i’m making some random art. It would be awesome if some people come. And i wish good luck to everybody with their game!

Need help with pathfinding in unity.

The navigation stuff in unity is for 3d. It can be used in a 2d project but on internet people says that to do that i should turn my entire scene so the camera will be looking down. Only idea i could come up with is create a copy of the obstacles in 2d into a hidden 3d map only made for pathfinding and pass the transform values of the agent into my 2d world character. But baking is made before game starts so if i am gonna put it that was i must place each 3d counterpart of the normal obstacles manually. And it hurts B(. Can someone help about it?

I was trying to solve this problem too but then I found that I don’t need pathfinding in my game 😀

Or yeah maybe i should change the idea a bit so i dont need pathfinding.

We had exactly the same problem for LD 30. Since unity offers a lot of features, at least I do not know of any that could help you with that.

Bird as a Weapon

Well this was not the best ide i had but like the best one i could possibily finish.

Main idea is you can send the bird to direction. If hits an enemy it will like peck or something. Idk yet ill decide while adding animations with detailed sprites. You can call the bird back if there is no obstacle between you etc. I am planning to make a maze-ish game after im done with enemies. If you find idea it could make it more original please leave a comment B). And good luck with your games.

What should i do about web player thing?

Game is not totally finished but yeah. I want this to be on a website. Im using unity. On here it says i can build with HTML5 but ihave no idea how to do that. Thanks!

Go to the build settings and select on the right html5 or WebGL. WebGL is still in beta i think.

I probably was wrong. WebGL is not supported by most browsers. So i am clueless.

Do what Twixtor said originally and go into your build settings, then change it to WebGL/HTML5. It’ll take a long time to build, so be prepared to take a break.

Thanks ill try when im done with game.

Problem with WebGL building

It doesnt build on my pc. It gives a long error that i dont wanna spam here. The error. http://paste.ubuntu.com/10853911/ When i googled it where was a blog says in 32 bit you cant make builds for WebGL in unity. So could someone help me? Is there a workaround. Or if someone can just build the thing for me and send the build? Thanks for help!

What should i do about hosting?

I have complated my game for compo and submitted the widows version and source. I hvae managed to make build for WebGL on another computer. My computer was 32 bit. Huh. I have no idea what to do with this build can i place it on a dropbox or something? or is there better places? (Using unity BTW)

Sign up for an account at itch.io. They can host WebGL games (and other builds, if you’d like to publish any).

Yes, you can use Dropbox.

Blurry images on web player

My Compo here

Windows build works fine screenshots in the submisson are from it.

When i build it for Unity Web Player sprites gets blurry like this B(.

Anyone know why? And i want to thank entire community for the help they made so far. It was my first ludum dare and had some hard times.

Yet another experience post!

Hello everyone! In this post i want to talk about my experiences on Ludum Dare #32: An Unconventional Weapon. First of all i am new to this Game Jam things and have a little bit Unity3D experience. By experience i mean i have made a succesful Doodle Jump clone a year ago. My only big hope source was my huge knowledge of C++. I have learned so many stuff while Compo and after it so ill talk about them in time order. Here goes the story of Bird Quest!

Before the Ludum Dare

I was just looking around. Checking twitch chat and other stuff. My fault was not having a look on old ludum games. Like what people does for menus and stuff.

An Unconventional Weapon

Well, what a theme! It’s just too relax! You can do anything! Well, no. After 1 and half hours i had 3 different ideas.

1) Light as a Weapon

You guys know Alan Wake right. Think it in 2d platformer style. You have a flashlight and dark creatures haunting you. This idea was not possible because i dont have enough knowledge about collision detections. How can you check if flashlights light is colliding with enemy or not?

2) Money as a Weapon

This one was fun to think. You are a rich man. Very rich and greedy! An angel comes down to earth to punish you. Your punishment is you can only use money as a weapon! And people you have hurt before are attacking you. Gameplay is simply gun upgrading. Imagine a gatling gun made of dollars firing quarters! Too many pixel art and illogical backstory made me give up on this one.

3) An animal as a Weapon

Robot Wants Puppy is a game that fits too well into the this theme. Check it out.

When i remembered this game i decided i could make something with a bird instead of cat.

So my journey began!

How to Find a Path!

After implementing the bird. Throw and call back stuff. (You’ll see what i mean here) I made a simple enemy for testing birds attack. My first plan was enemies being guards as you are kidnapped by pirates or something. So if someone notices you he will chase you. For that i needed a pathfinding system. Unity only have pathfinding for 3D. But you can always use 3d things for 2d games right! NOPE! In order to use Unity’s built-in navmesh thingy things must be on X-Z plane. Not unlike Unity’s built-in 2d stuff which uses X-Y plane. So i was going to either flip everything and spend more time on future things because i will be using 3d colliders for a 2d game etc. or find another pathfinding system. (Incoming bad pun) On internet i learned that i need “a star”. But i havent used asset store before. And never going to pay for a algorithm. Also i am 17 years old now so it doesn’t make sense spending my dad’s money into something i may end up not using. So i placed a post here. Thanks to community my blog got a help comment. About a free A* package. Haven’t tried it though. I decided to stop spending time on this pathfinding subject and make my enemies just walk to player foolishly when they see the player.

Bird is flying

This is the only thing i have recorded while compo and i feel really bad about it now. I will probably just record some dev progress on next ones. Anyway as you see bird can fly, stop, kill enemy. There is no animation just simple sprites. It was my first time doing a grid sprite sheet and more importantly it was my first time using the animations in unity for animating a walking 2D sprites. I worked out better then i thought. But my art skills were worse then i hoped B(.

Last Hours

On last 4 or 5 hours i had no gameplay. Just enemies and the player with her bird. And no menu. That things done in a hurry. I used GUI buttons in Unity for first time. Made a shitty menu. Added a last minute second map. And i was ready to build.

You can’t build for WebGL on 32 bit

Apperantly B(. I still have this problem if someone could make a WebGL build for me it would be too awesome! Please, please leave a comment if you can help me with that! So i only made a Windows build. By the way end of submission hour was 5 am here. So after i uploaded stuff and took a shower so i could stay awake for a school day and leaved home.

Power of Community

Really, this place has a strong community. Thanks to everbody that helped me on any part of this thing!

I tried to play some of other peoples games on my linux computer at school. (Long story short we study for local informatics olympiads at school so i have a personal computer there) It just feels so good when some people just plays and comments to your game B).

There was no audio in my game. Because i really really have no idea how someone can make music. And time was limited so i didnt add any sound into Bird Quest. But ill learn about this stuff and add a music on my next projects. Even the music will be just 10-15 notes looping.

Bird Quest Compo Page

I did some minor changes on some sprites, added a tutorial and 2 new maps etc, and made a Post-Compo build. And also Linux and Mac builds. These arent tested i just clicked build here so please tell me if they work or not. I need to make a WebGL build my pc just can’t do it. Please someone help me with that. All i want is someone building my source and and giving me the build. Also i am planning to make a post about the nice entries i have found in a week. I don’t know maybe even some playtrough videos for them. So stay tuned! (Wow i did a post. It feels good.)

Something you can try to break!

Here is the prototype of the game i am making for the miniLD. Ill start building levels after some time. So please give it a try and tell if you can find bugs. The only control key is space(or mouse) which swaps your character between 2 layers. Animals will stay on their own layer and so colored blocks. R for restart. There is an end door you can reach but it just restarts the map for now.

And what are your ideas about the problem “when you swap while colliding with a block on the other layer”. Should i complately disable swapping while colling with other world?

Either disable swapping, or make swapping into walls kill you (if you want to go the hardcore way). But making you bug around and possibly glitch through walls is not the way to go, I think.

This is a really cool idea! Very excited for the full version. I was able to reach the exit without using any keys, not sure if that was intended. I think if possible it should push you to the nearest empty space when you swap, but that seems error prone. probably disable swapping. one thing you could do is add a physics effector to the swappable blocks that pushes things away from the center.

My game “The Walker” is done!

Link to the entry page.

Check it out. It is a one-button puzzle platformer-ish game with a story i made up. Which includes a cursed magician named Margus and some cute poor animals. I have plans about making this thing longer and make a build for android on this summer maybe. Here are some screenshots.

And my sheet. Forward and backward shots are bad because i dont use them in my game. (Sorry ! BP)

There is no sprite swap button in the game. Sorry I have tried but it didn’t end up well.

This is the second game I have made for LD. (My LD32 entry) On Bird Quest I had a good plan for story but at the end there was no story in the game. This time I added some dialogue boxes to each level even though the game actually not so related with that part of story. So tell me what you think about it. I will try to play all entries for this miniLD. Thanks for reading. Here are some map plans I drew.

I am out(Probably)

Yeah. I have only like 3 days before a holiday/family visit which will take all the time limit for this MiniLD. And i am not in a full time jam mood so i cant make a game in this 3 days. I’ll have no active usable computer there so i will not be able to make a digital game from pc. I will have my Lumia(Windows Phone) with 250’ish MB limited internet connection there and some spare time for studying and stuff. Maybe i will try to make something physical with playing cards/chess set or something to keep it real. It will not fit in theme or anything but i don’t wanna be out from a LD event. I am actually a pretty new guy here but Ludum Dare is the best thing ever.(Did LD32 and last 2 Minis) Any ideas on how can i make a game with my phone or a pyhsical game? I dont know maybe i can do something simple now to be able to make a game on my non-computer time?

Just tried it. Definitely understandable and fun. I would have preferred it if the fish ate the creatures though (and made munching sounds and stuff) but hey, I won’t complain I loved murdering them and their families.

The font is really tiny and hard to read, just a little big larger font would be great.

Game is ready!

Yeah! Check it! It’s kinda done. I might make some stupid music to make game shittier on the rest of time. And maybe animate some stuff. I don’t know I wanna stop though.

Made a demo for my own shitty dialogue system which uses XML. On here.

There are 2 characters. X to talk. Arrow keys to walk. Q to close game.

Any tips/experiences could help B).
