I’m scared about the upcoming Ludum Dare, and don’t really know where to start

It’s upcoming only in a month’s time, and I’m shaking even now. I don’t know where to start! I’d love to prepare by using sfxr and making spritesheets in Paint.NET, but the rules say I can’t until the 48 hours start. I understand Game Maker. I know how it’s just like coding but put in a simpler way. But I’d like to challenge myself, and go more versatile with using C# or Java. I’d use ActionScript with flash, but flash’s amtlib.dll isn’t working, and I understand Java and C# better. Programming would be a LOT easier if it was put in a simpler way. It’s like learning a new language, you know the translation but you have to learn the language. I’ve dreamed of doing something like the Ludum Dare, but I need more training! Can anyone bring me to something that’ll help me prepare?

Ontop of all that, what should I use to program it? I have Netbeans, Eclipse, Microsoft Visual Express, Gamemaker 8 Pro, and (I haven’t used this in a LOONG time) Unity.

Thank you.

You can technically use anything that you have created before AND have made publicly available. So anyone could grab the resources you’ve released in the wild. They accept posts in here with links to what you’ve made as ‘released publicly’.

Ah, and I have slightly the same problem that you do. I understand Unity “well enough” but don’t know whether I should use that or something actionscript-based. I like C#, but I have a slightly hard time with 2D in Unity. Whatever you use, I highly recommend that it be playable on the web.

Unless you really know what you are doing or want to take crazy risks, always do a compo or jam in the language/libraries you know best. There’s enough challenge in bringing a game to completion in a compo without throwing a new technology on top of that.

Don’t be scared! Its good fun, the last Ludum Dare was my first one. There’s nothing to worry about, just enjoy it when it starts. As for language, Batch is a nice and easy one to use for game jams as it sets yourself a challenge on what you can make using it. :)

Before the first time I entered Ludum Dare I wanted to do some preparation as well. What I ended up doing (and what helped me a lot) was to actually port an old Nintendo Entertainment System from scratch using my language and tools of choice. Specifically I ported over Dragon Warrior, or at least partially (you could play thought the first hour or so). What was nice about doing this was the graphics and sound can be easily downloaded, and there are tons of documentation out there on how these games work under the covers. Given this I was able to concentrate on getting used to the tools I was going to use and solve much of the basic game issues I would need to solve like loading level data, drawing sprites, etc.

A little scared, but up for the challenge!

I’m determined to make a game! I’m hoping that I’ll be able to make it in HTML using the applet code… Hope it works!

  • IDE: Eclipse (Maybe NetBeans if I change my mind about Eclipse)
  • Language: Java
  • Framework: Java (Duh?)
  • Graphics: Paint.NET, and maybe MSPaint (EDIT:) Almost forgot Pyxel Editor! Might use, it looks interesting (:D)
  • Sound: SFXR, Maybe Audicity if I need it, and not sure about music yet.
  • Environment: Anything that can run java (I think)

This’ll be my very first Ludum Dare. I’m just starting to learn java, but I know some C# and Unity which runs with java, so this should work out great.

Wish the best of luck to the others!

Changing my submission a little…

I’ve decided that in order to make a good game that not only the public, but I would enjoy, I will have to change.

  • Language: GameMaker
  • Graphics: Game Maker (built in sprite maker), Paint, Paint.NET
  • Audio: sfxr, Possibly Audacity, Maybe my voice recordings, I might try BFXR
  • Drinks: Water, possibly Lemonade =)

Also, can I use music from the following?

Other Videogames (IE Pokemon ETC)

Online Album (IE Cor Metallum, Cavestory, ETC)

Because I can’t find a descent music maker that makes music of my liking.

If you are entering the compo, everything (including music) must be created during the 48 hours. If you are entering the jam, you can use outside content but only if you have permission to use it. So you probably can’t use music from other video games, sorry.

Thanks… I’m doing compo, though. Do you know of any decent music maker for:

Bosses

Levels

Maybe Menu?

Those are the 3 I basically need. The compo’s in about 5 hours 13 minutes, I’m a little scared, as I have no real decent music maker at hand yet.

And so the race is on!

Dang, I was hoping it wouldn’t be Ten Seconds… Of all the things… Well, whatever.

ATM it’s 10:48PM where I live, so I’ll sign off for bed at 11.

I’ll need my strength tomorrow! Also, it was kinda annoying how the LD started at 8:00PM or so…

I CANT FIND MUSIC ;(

Can anyone please help? I can’t find any decent music generating program! I’ve tried Famitracker and stuff, but I just can’t get the fast paced music I want! Can anyone please help? I’ve tried cgMusic and alot of other things…

Try NanoStudio – it’s free and a lot easier to grasp than Famitracker & co.

Not much progress…

I’m still stuck on music, but I’ve made a game over screen, etc.

The first room of my game… I’m going AUS style :P

The second room… this leads to a quite tedious level :P

This is just the start of the game. Soon I’ll add a menu :)

Dosage of Distraction

Every now and then I have to take my DOD (dosage of distraction) with my cats 😛

My Entry: Glutun’s Big Adventure

It’s not the best game, but I like it. It’s a cool platformer. 😀

I though the compo was about to end, and i was freaking out… and then I realized…

“1 hour till compo ends”

I was so relieved, but enough of that.

Download: Wait till the compo’s done 😛

Once in game, on the menu click the yellow button for the plot (It says plot on it). You’ll get the game so much more.

Omegah its a cave

Pics:

I knew the cave was a bad idea…

Jungle… Underground jungle?

I don’t think that liquid at the bottom is water OR blood…

Im joining the Shark Jammin Jam!

I mind as well… The more the merrier!

I’m not sure if I’ll be jamming with anyone, but my stuff:

Language: GML (Game maker 8 Pro)

Graphics: Paint.net, maybe Photoshop, Game Maker

Audio: Audicity, LMMS, sfxr, any program I can get my hands onto

Drink: Lemonade, maybe soda (Cola :P)

Initial goal… Find out how to make some more Water Physics, just because every game MUST have water, right?

…Right?

Shark Frenzy!

I hope everyone’s ready, because november’s upon us, and the shark jam is right next to it!

I’m exiting the Shark Jam…

I have too much real life stuff going on at the moment, and I’ve already lost about a day.

I’ll have to walk out of this one, guys…

Darnit! Missed Mini LD#48

Well, its 11:07 PM on the 11th here, and I just noticed that theres a mini LD going on at the moment!

I would’ve totally been in it!

Would I be able to get 24 hours extra?

EDIT: Unless of course, our time zones are different and it just started a couple hours ago. USEastern time here.

Preview of game “Explorer Run”

Hey guys, I’m going to demake Temple Run. Here’s a preview of the character:

Sorry if it might be a little small 😛

Explorer Run: Updates

Well, day 1 was REALLY successful! I got tons of mechanics in!

If you didn’t know, I’m basing my game off of temple run.

The reason I’m making levels is:

1) It wouldn’t be that fun walking infinitely in the jungle.

2) I’m OCD and love games with levels in them

So I leave you with 2 pictures of 2 levels. Enjoy!

NO THEY ARE NOT NAKED MEN.

Lucky Timing Much!

I was just sitting around thinking about making a new game, then I thought “Hmm, when’s the next ludum dare?” I checked and it turned out it was in 10 minutes. Wow. I’m really pumped.

Help! Will I be able to participate?

Okay, so I want to do the jam this weekend. Since I’m in America, the ludum dare starts tonight at 8PM. The day after, me and my family are doing a huge trip to goto another state where my cousins are for a week, and the drive will begin super early in the morning and last about all day. The next day, we’ll be busy unpacking more and spending time with eachother. Will I be able to shift the ludum dare acouple days late? I’ve been waiting 3-4 months for this!

Games cannot be submitted to the system after the official 48 hours.

Help with music?

I’m having trouble with making music. Before when I used to make music, it was easy, as I didn’t know much about good music and as long as it sounded fine I was okay with it. Now, I’m getting myself braindead trying to make up music with my OCD kicking in. Whenever I even make a small beat, I can never make up anything good to go with it, as LMMS doesn’t have much to offer. So, I move to Anvil Studio. It made some of my FAVORITE music (Including in An Untitled Story and Generic Man) so I decided to give it a try. It has lots of very good high-quality instruments, and is very versatile. A couple problems though:

1) I have no idea how to import my own instruments

2) The process of making music in it is very long and neck-aching.

I have tried FL Studio, but the free version had little to no to offer, and I’m trying to stay on a budget of, well, 0.00$.

I look at Famitracker, and it can make some very nice making music! (One of my favorites being Rushjet) But it is really confusing to make different sounds that I want, and in the period of a month I can’t cram in learning the 8-bit sound system whilst making a game and trying to get done school!

I would just make the game first and use that as inspiration for the music, but I’ve tried that 2-3 times already, and I just couldn’t make the right tune for the game! I don’t want a mining game with puzzle music!

I feel like all my ideas are drained, and it’s hard for me to make even videos now!

Does anyone have any tips on what I should do?

I usually go to the modarchive.org and listen to 30-40 tunes to get inspiration and also extract some samples (instruments). You can also import your own just by converting from .wav format Since I’m using Linux, I prefer MilkyTracker.

“I’m In”‘s already? Whatever, I mind as well.
