LD16

A New Challenger Approaches!

What’s up, all you game design suckaz and suckazettes out there?

I come from a land where the word ‘SUCKA’ is term of endearment, and things that are ‘RAD’ are of the utmost importance. Radical dudes with attitudes are constantly abound, swinging from the hip with the tip of their fingers on the pulse of this cutting-edge badassery known as LUDUM DARE. Prepare for the pinnacle of our programming ponderosa!

My name is SonnyBone and this will be my very first Ludum Dare competition. I’ll be hanging out in the IRC and posting some bloggage along the way, so I’m sure we’ll see a lot of one another. I want to find enough time to fit in at least one custom song for my game, but I feel as though I’m already becoming too ambitious. Rookie mistake on the horizon? Perhaps.

Either way, we’re gonna see some awesome games next week, and that makes me very happy.

LONG LIVE LUDUM DARE!

… For What Could’ve Been

So yeah, I suggested 3 themes for LD16.  I ‘accidentally’ suggested POWER OUTAGE CALAMITY in a comment on the main news page. I don’t count that one, because I never actually added it to the Wiki myself. It just kind of ended up there somehow.  I suggested UNWANTED POWERS which came out on top in the first round, which is pretty rad.

However… my favorite suggestion didn’t make the cut, and I can only weep for what could’ve been.

RIP, best theme ever.

7 hour screenshot

I spent my first 3 hours designing the main character and coming up with an art style. I then coded the basic character movement and added a particle effect during the following 4 hours. Add in some playtesting, IRC, and blog reading and you’re looking at my entire Friday night.

I’m super tired, so I think it’s time to hit the sack. I can only hope that I remain this productive tomorrow.

Night 2 Update: UNCERTAINTY

I’m a Ludum Dare newbie, and I’ve fallen victim to that total bastard, Father Time. I had too many ideas and I tried to implement them all, and it has put me in a terrible situation. I won’t be able to complete this game in the way that I previously wanted. Instead, I will have to cut the story short and leave the player with a cliff hanger. Hopefully the story will prove to be interesting enough to justify this decision. I plan to keep working on this game after LD16 is complete, but I intend to get it to a solid, presentable state by the deadline.

The HUD system took the most of my time, as I planned to implement a deep collection of menus and inventory screens. The foundation is there, I just don’t have time to put it all to use, unfortunately.

While planning for LD16, I tossed around a few ideas that involved my suggested theme, UNWANTED POWERS, and the EXPLORATION theme. There were also a few themes in the list that revolved around a post-apocalyptic scenario, so those have been floating around in my brain for a while. It seems as though I ended up going with a Wall-E meets Fallout type of experience where your goal is to scour the land and figure out what happened. It’s kind of rad, but isn’t very exciting at the moment. You just kind of… explore. There are no enemies at this point, and I’m not sure if I need them. The theme IS exploration, after all.

Also… I was hoping to record at least ONE song for this game, but I don’t see that happening.

Here’s a quick screenshot to prove that I actually have something.

Soulspark is “done”. Time to eat!

OK, so I submitted the game with 3 minutes to spare, and I’m no longer a Ludum Dare newbie. But why do i feel so… BLAH? I need to get away from the computer for a while, I think…

My game didn’t end up where I wanted it to, but that’s OK. I still managed to create a great foundation that I can continue to build upon. The game has serious potential, I think. It needs more refinement, content, and story, of course… but isn’t that the case with all games? I wanted to make at least ONE song for the game, but I just didn’t have enough time. I don’t even have any sound effects yet. I had music constantly playing during the development of Soulspark, so I never really noticed until I played my ‘final’ version. It’s terribly quiet, so please… if you play my game… put some music on.

Since the theme is all about EXPLORING, Soulspark is a laid-back, no-action kind of experience. No enemies and no weapons. Just you and the world. OH, and your constantly depleting battery power that you have to recharge. Think Wall-E meets Fallout… then throw it head first into Metroid… and suck out all of the action. Does it make a fun game? Maybe not at this point… but like I said… the potential is there.

ISLANDS: The Game (featuring islands)

I want my game to look like THIS. Will it happen?

I want my game to look like THIS. Will it happen?

So… here’s what my art style will be. HA! Looks like I won’t be finishing my game.

AGAIN.

First Screen Shot

Savory Sea Hoss

Savory Sea Hoss

After hours upon hours of struggling to come up with an idea that satisfied me, I decided to go with SAVORY SEA HOSS, a high seas adventure about a radical guy with radical intentions.  You deliver delicious goodness to castaways hungering for tastiness. The only catch is… Sea Hoss has terrible aim, and he’s been known to accidentally murder the very people he’s trying to save. KEEP YOUR MURDER PERCENTAGE DOWN AND YOUR SAVORY SAVIOR PERCENTAGE UP IN THIS GOOFY ISLAND-THEMED ROMP STARRING A PURPLE THING WITH AN ORANGE VEST.

All stupidity aside, the game looks kinda neat with the ‘squigglevision’ / Crayola art style I’ve chosen.

It’s also funny seeing starving castaways getting pegged in the head with hotdogs and falling into the ocean.

I MAY ACTUALLY FINISH ON TIME!

WITH MUSIC AND SOUND EFFECTS!

MAYBE!!!

ON SCHEDULE

ALRIGHT! After a full day of work, I have the core mechanics down. They work, and they work well. I need to add a few little extras (pickups / powerups) along with some type of HUD, a few more island designs, a couple more castaway sprites, a title screen, an ending screen, and a song. I already have most of the SFX in place, but I want to record a few more tomorrow. I SHOULD be able to wrap this up, unlike last time, where I ended up with 10 percent of the ideas I was trying to implement.

The FINAL Countdown

teh savory

teh savory

Chicken Tenders + Garlic Toast + French Fries + Ranch Dipping Sauce + Cole Slaw + Boylan’s Birch Beer + Totoro Mouse Pad + LUDUM DARE 17 = A GREAT SUNDAY AFTERNOON

It’s the FINAL stretch, and I’m getting a late start today. I had to grab some grub and take my dog for a walk, where she proceeded to take her sweet time as I envisioned features and polish going down the drain along with the possibility of a good song. SO HERE WE ARE. STRAPPED UP ON THE INTERNET. TRYIN NOT TO FEEL IT TOO HARD.

LET’S GO!

SEA HOSS – Post Mortem / Comment Response

SAVORY SEA HOSS ended up being a complete success for me. I say this for 3 very important reasons.

1) I set out to make a game with an objective that could actually be reached (unlike my LD16 entry), and I wanted to include SFX and MUSIC (unlike my LD16 entry)

2) I wanted to make something visually and mechanically unique

3) I wanted to make something FUN / FUNNY

Screenshot-2

I knew these 3 things before the theme was even being voted on. I decided this after LD16, when I looked back at what I had done wrong. For starters, I completely ignored my GOOFY instincts and tried to make something SUPER SERIOUS. I can do that sort of thing, but it doesn’t come as natural, thus taking MUCH longer to create as I’m constantly arguing with myself over how to handle certain things. By using my naturally goofy / ridiculous initial ideas for LD17, I was able to crank something out at rapid pace, with little to no difficult decision making. Everything just sort of fell out of my head and I didn’t second guess it.

Secondly, on my list of things that I screwed up during LD16, I failed to understand what was truly possible in 48 hours. The game I attempted to create in December of ’09 was simply impossible. Sure, I got most of the very basic framework down, but what I had in my head was SOOOOO far away from what ended up on my screen. I seriously had about 10 percent of my planned content realized in the actual released code. I didn’t make that mistake this time. Sure, there were some things that I didn’t have time to implement, but my list was MUCH smaller and more realistic. Any time I seriously questioned whether or not I could fit something in, I’d either scrap it or find a way around it. I stuck to my 5 core ideas and saw them through to the end, and it left me with time to add extras. Very awesome.

Lastly, I totally postponed the implementation of AUDIO for LD16. I postponed it so deep into the competition that it became an impossibility. My game was silent, which was something I REALLY wanted to avoid. For LD17, I made sure to implement SFX during my second phase of development on Saturday. Then, at the end of the day on Sunday, I had time to make a quick song and wrap it all up.

So what about LD17? What did I screw up this time?

First of all, I got a late start. I didn’t do a single thing on Friday night but sit in the IRC chat and try to come up with an idea. I sketched some junk on paper, played some games for inspiration, listened to some reggae, and basically wasted 4 good hours. I was seriously stumped, so I just went to sleep with serious doubts. I woke up the next morning, walked my dog, got something to eat, and sat down to look at my concept art from the night before. You see, I was going about it all wrong on Friday. I was making concept art and trying to think of a way to turn it into ‘game art’. HOW STUPID! My ART was already right there in front of me! So basically my concept art BECAME my game. That’s when I came up with the ‘Crayola’ / ‘Squigglevision’ art style for my game as a way to CHEAT. I could have a character with very little frames of actual animation, but the art style made it look 10 times more lively. WOOT.

So I drew the main character and some scenery, then I tweaked the player movement for several hours until I was satisfied.

But that’s all I had. A purple thing in a orange vest on a leaf floating in the water near an island.

I had NO IDEA what the actual gameplay would consist of until my brain muttered something about the “meat and potatoes” of my game. I immediately drew a potato and created a quick and dirty mechanic that allowed me to toss infinite potatoes into the air.  For basically no reason. I then added some gravity, randomized the TOSSIN’ angle / speed, and created the water splash sprite. I didn’t even have time to really stop and think if it was even a good idea. It was already decided. My game would be a bout a purple guy in an orange vest on a leaf… in the ocean… near some islands… throwing food into the air.

AND SO SAVORY SEA HOSS WAS BORN

It made no sense, but I giggled the entire time, and I had a friggin’ blast. I learned a A LOT during LD17, and I can’t express how grateful I am that this entire thing exists. Ludum Dare is the single most powerful learning experience I’ve ever had in game design. It’s almost magical.

No, fuck that.

It IS magical.

Thank you, Ludum Dare.

NOW…. ON TO SOME GAME COMMENTS AND RESPONSES

crackerblocks says …

a tour de force!

Coming from YOU, that is amazing. Your LD16 entry was HANDS DOWN, my absolute favorite. It was pure genius. Hilarity at my fingertips. Most LD games get one playthrough… TWO if they’re lucky. I replayed EL DORADO like 40 times in one night. And as for your LD17 entry, I recently found out that I REALLY like hockey, so I couldn’t have been more pleased with your game. I hope to see you around for LD18 and beyond.

dgfitch says …

EPIC.

LOL

I wouldn’t describe my game as EPIC at all, but I’m thrilled that you did. Thanks for playing and thanks for the comment.

Tyler says …

Love the art style. I really wish you had more levels/gameplay, but the art certainly compensates.

Yeah, I have some GREAT ideas for where I want to go with this game, and it definitely includes MORE MORE MORE of everything. I’m glad you dig the art so much. Thanks for the comment!

Jonathan Whiting says …

Completely and utterly nuts, but in the great way.

Now THAT’S what I want to hear. Speaking of nuts, I had an idea for one of the castaways to yell, “HEY! PEANUTS!” and then you’re suddenly wearing a red and white striped outfit and you have to toss bags of peanuts at him for bonus points while the background randomly changes into a baseball stadium. Kind of like a MIRAGE type thing. Yeah. NOT POSSIBLE IN 48 HOURS. lol

Diet Chugg says …

Forget logic kill all the survivors! Simple and Hilarious game. I had a feeling it was going to be funny just by reading the instructions. The music was great would of loved to see some humorous sound effects added.

SIMPLE and HILARIOUS is certainly what I wanted to achieve, so I’m really happy that you say that. I’m glad you also liked the music. It was not easy trying to crank out a song in under 30 minutes to fit this type of theme. The one thing I had to cut from the game that was pretty high on my EXTRAS list were the hilarious sound effects. It’s certainly something I’ll be adding in the ‘final’ game.

If you haven’t played my game, I’d love it if you’d do that right now. And comment. I love that, too.

Alright. I’m off to play and rate some more games. Thanks for reading/playing. See you guys in that FYOOOOOOCHA!!!

Dead Internet

Well, thanks to some stormage, I haven’t had an internet connection since yesterday afternoon. I just now saw the theme. Internet is still out, so don’t expect any updates from me during the compo. I may not even be submitting a game if I can’t find a way to upload in time.

The theme is great, and I’m looking forward to playing the games, regardless of whether or not I can submit something.

Have fun!

LD20

The part where I declare my intent.

I missed LD 19. I bombed LD 18. I did well in LD 17. My debut was LD 16.

I’m going to turn this around and make LD20 my biznatch.

Something is different this time. I can… feel it. But I can’t quite put my finger on it. It feels like we’re going where the going is gonna be gone before we even get there. Maybe we’re blazing blindly towards a blank horizon on the backs of beasts of burden… oh so brazenly. Maybe this time… Maybe this time… things are gonna be different.

Or perhaps I’m wrong. Perhaps we’re all just milling about in an incandescent pool of transendental insubstantiation.

Either way, I’M IN IT TO WIN IT.

I have a full suite of tools and I’m not sure what I’ll be doing.
XNA, Unity, Game Maker, Python, Flash…
Maya, 3DSMax, Mudbox, Zbrush, Motion Builder, Photoshop, Gimp…
Pro Tools, FL Studio, SFXR…

See ya on the battlefield, suckaz.

Instead of Complaining About the Theme

… I’m going to twist it and turn it until it suits my personal fancy.

48 HOURS LEFT

AND I’M GONNA GO WASTE PART OF IT CUZ I GOTTA FOLD MAH CLOTHES

IT DANGEROUS TO GO ALONE! TAKE THIS FABRIC SOFTENER!

DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUN

Stayed Up All Night… Here’s What I Got

sonnybone teaser 1

I have my main character sprite MOSTLY animated. I have the runs, the jumps, the falls, the turns, the stops. Now I just need the fights and the swims. Then I have to draw enemies, the rest of the level sprites, create the sound effects, write the music, record the voices, then slap it all together with a story.

Yeah… that’s not gonna happen.

Now I’m going to sleep. See you suckaz in a few hours.

THANX ZDANIELZ

I screwed myself and wasted a ton of time…

Instead of just saying SCREW IT, IT WON’T WORK, I decided to mess around for nearly 3 hours trying to create a specific death animation/scenario for the enemies.

What a waste. Now I’m behind schedule AND I can’t make it the way I wanted to.

PRO TIP: If it can’t be figured out in 30 minutes, simplify it and move on! NO TIME TO WASTE!

BACK TO WORK!

Looks Like Another Unfinished Game On My Hands

I had a few crazy setbacks today and it looks like I’ll be falling short once again.

I’ll get a few hours of rest and then wake up and work like a dirty rotten sumbitch.

Ran a few art style rendering tests and I’m still not sure what to go with. Performance takes a huge hit, but I have a monster rig so it doesn’t reflect well on my end. I’ll have to turn the knobs down a bit before releasing it for the compo so more people can play at a steady frame rate.

See you suckaz tomorrow. I’m sure I’ll be there… at the deadline… with an unfinished game.

CURSE YOU, OH FOWL FATHER TIME!

TAKE THIS!!!

This LD48 took me to my limit, everybody to the limit, I said come on Fhqwhgads!

…ahem…

So yeah my ‘game’ is ‘done’ and ready to be ‘played’. You can check out the official LD entry page HERE and check out my personal site with game info, controls, and downloads HERE.

It’s a 2D beat ’em up with a twisted theme interpretation. The majority of your entertainment is gonna come from the audio and basic mechanics, as there is not challenge at all… since you CAN’T DIE. Or win. You just go through the rooms and then the game resets after the last room because I didn’t have time to make a ‘win’ screen or whatever. I prefer to play in full-screen… which you can do with F4, or you can manually change the game window size.

GAH I’m tired. Going to sleep now.
I can’t wait to dig into these games!

In It To Win It… Or Just In It?

Not feelin’ too sweet about this one for some reason. I wasn’t around for the last LD due to schoolwork. Now that finals are over… I just feel DRAINED. Been sitting at the computer way too much recently. Sitting at the computer for another 3 days straight? OH GAWD.

So maybe I’ll just jam a little.

Either way… rad games are gonna be made, and that’s always a good thing.

SEE YOU ON THE BATTLEFIELD, SUCKAZ!
