I’m In! (Second Time’s A Charm)

This will be my second Ludum Dare. My first one was LD27, and I didn’t exactly make it. I had a game roughly done, but it didn’t follow the theme and wasn’t that enjoyable to play, so I didn’t submit it. But this time, I WILL! It will be my first official Ludum Dare where I follow the rules, and actually submit something.

If all goes well, I will be streaming the whole thing here: www.twitch.tv/I_Am_Spencer. I’ll also be doing give aways of various games, and I’ll have a Play-Your-LD-Game After-party! So feel free to check it out, it should be fun.

Languages: HTML5 and CoffeeScript

Art: Photoshop and PyxelEdit

Sound: Unknown (probably bfxr or something similar)

Is this fair?

I found this online text-to-voice app here: http://www.ivona.com/us/

I wanted some narration for my game, but I’m am not sounding the best at the moment (sore throat) so I was wondering if using this was against the rules in any way.

Thanks for your help, and good luck!

I’m pretty sure this is perfectly okay. The rules state that all “content creation, and development tools are allowed. (3dsmax, Photoshop, Flash, etc)” Thus, I am guessing that using a text-to-voice program would not be a problem at all. Good luck to you too.

i think it’s ok, too. or you could just use google translate and record the voice there :)

Beneath The Memories

About a week or so before Ludum Dare started, I was going through my collection of games and came across Thomas Was Alone. It was very fun, and inspired me to make what I made for this Ludum Dare.

My game Beneath The Memories, is a short platformer game with a story told through narration. It’s probably pretty simple, but I had a lot of fun making. Hope you enjoy it!

Also, thank you to everyone who has already played it and left feedback, I love your comments and I will be sure to play everyone’s game!

Game Template For Phaser Users

Hello everyone!

As it’s coming closer and closer to Ludum Dare, I decided to make a simple ‘Game-Template‘ (for Phaser) which allows the programmer to skip all the basic stuff, such as setting up their index page, getting there classes worked out, and even let’s you have a very basic character that can move up/down/left/right.

As per the rules, I am releasing this template, and the art in it (which was created by me) for free over on my github page.

If anyone who uses Phaser (which is an html5/javascript game framework, check it out if you haven’t) would like to use this simple starting template for the compo, feel free to. I would recommend that you are comfortable with Phaser, and using the state manager, however if you have any questions about it, I will be more than happy to answer them here on this post.

For any Ludum Dare veterans who see a problem with this (such as I made the template include to much, or something along those lines), please let me know by leaving a comment and telling me what the problem is. The art that is included in the template, is not intended to be used during the compo, you must make your own art/sounds/assets in order to follow the rules. The art is just there to show you it works.

Also, to any Phaser programmers, if you see anything that can be improved with this template, please let me know. I do not consider myself a ‘pro’ at Phaser in any way, so I’m sure I must of done something that can be done simpler. Thanks for the help, and I hope this benefits you!

Good Luck To Everyone Who’s Participating!

ideas…

So I surprisingly got an idea quickly this time around, I just hope it’s not too crazy to finish. Basics of it are all the menus are on the screen at one time, and you must go find buttons to put them back into a nicer looking u.i., but I would like to add a big ‘story’, but most likely won’t have time.

Also, this is my first time doing updates, I’m usually too busy with the game, but I’m eating now so why not :)

I’m still figuring some small details, like the art. I’m not sure if I will be using pixel art or not. Might go hand-drawn for this one. Who knows, maybe I’ll scrap this idea all together and do something else.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

Progress Update

working title: Great Nation

So, I got my idea rather quickly this time around, and I’m trying my hardest to make something “simple” [scope is important boys and girls].

Here are a few screenshots of my progress:

#1 Just A Mockup [1 hour & 20 minutes in] –

#2 Basic Visual Mechanics [3 hours & minutes 28 in] –

#3 Basic Gameplay Mechanics [5 hours & 6 minutes in] –

#4 More Gameplay Stuffs [16 hours & 56 minutes in] –

Screenshots #3 & #4 don’t look like much of an improvement, but that’s mainly because I was focusing on code and not art [also I slept in between them].

It’s fun tracking my progress like this, shows how slow I am haha.

That’s it for now, hope to see the rest of you at the finish line,

good luck everybody!

It’s On Like Donkey-Kong, and I’m In Like Winston!

See that? Two monkeys in one title. That’s the kind of talent I bring to this hoo-ha.

Anyways, LudumDare is back baby! Let’s do this all proper-like with a post about the snazzy tools I’ll be using this time round:

SUPERPOWERS HTML5 – Game Engine

ASEPRITE – Pixel Art Tool

GIMP – For Any Non-Pixel Graphics

AUDACITY – Audio Editing

Bread for food, possibly water if I’m feeling adventurous.

Hope everyone has fun this time round and makes something cool!

Gooooooood luck everyone :)
