Gday everyone. Or good evening to others.
today is my second LD and im pumped 😛 i have more than a 2 hour slot to create my game and hope to try out the jam first to be able to create a game under a good amount of time. Here are some of the tools ill be using:
Obs – streaming
Photoshop
unity3d
Cinema 4d and ZSculpt
youtube – mr suicide sheeps mixes
you can find my stream on twitch: aldian1
So good luck everyone! And have fun (:
I think the whole point of Ludum dare is to produce a game that is “fun” too play or interact with. Sadly to say i failed hard…..very hard. The fact that i had so much time annoyed me as well. So its time to break down what went wrong and why.
1. I didnt plan very well.
The idea was simple. Random waves of enemys that attack your base and get progressively harder. The “only get one” theme tying in with the fact that you only get one base. With multiple upgrades further along the way.
This is where it went wrong. Firstly i ignored the basic rule of programming. prototype to playable to finished. I skipped prototyping all together and tried to throw the game together in matters of minutes. Then working on the framework that was half broken as it was because i rushed and i didnt plan it.
2. I used a stupid system/framework
Basically i over used if and bool statements instead of enums and states. The fact that this happened meant the game was slow as every frame the script was checking for ifs and bools causing frame issues. I got stressed and just programmed the easy shortcut shit and tbh i deleted it all after ludum dare out of disgust.
– Music was good
– Finally learnt how to do gui resolutions.
– Learnt from my mistakes so that i can make an amazing 3rd entry.
– Learnt how to use z sculpt.
-Graphics werent too shabby this time.
If anybody would like to test my crummy game then please do.
So ill be happily entering this years Ludum Dare. For the first time ever ill be doing the 48 hr challenge which starts at 1am (in england) for me. Happy to say ive got lots of energy drinks and such prepped for this.
Ill be using:
Unity (engine) – mainly because im learning c++ atm but it is not good enough for a enjoyable game 😀
Photoshop for textures and art
Cinema 4d for models using a low poly isometric art style.
ill hopefully be live streaming or at least time lapsing my entry.
Cant wait to see everyone’s attempts!
good luck to everyone :))
wow
well that was quite an intense weekend. This theme was absolute incredible! I loved the idea of something “under the surface”.
My game is “beneath the monsters surface” and is about you trying to recover yours sister who has been eaten by the monster. IF you could possibly play it and tell me what you think that would be great!
Entering for the first time the compo. Super excited! and lots of interesting themes! You can follow me on twitter @Harry_Aldian to see my updates.
First update and probably my only till finish. The games theme sets you in a prison running some errands to earn enough cash to be able to escape. My twist on the theme was that prisoners are in some sense “monsters” themselves depending on how you look at it. (this isnt a generalisation though). Earn enough cash/escape to be able to finally come to terms with the man who did this all to you (bland but easy to make yay!). Of course a prison isnt complete without your stereotypical chain smoking group.
Just wanted to put in a few words from myself and to anyone who has stayed up for the end of the jam. Its 3:46 am in the UK but i just wanted to give my congrats to everyone who participated in Ludum Dare this weekend! Heres my finished entry. Ill be writing a post mortem tomorrow. Goodnight everyone!
