Team SWI-Prolog does it again

So if you had this crazy language that could reason, but was invented in 1972 and had no graphics libraries, obviously you'd enter Ludum Dare with it? No? We're a group of crazy programmers who intend to enter LD Jam using http://swi-prolog.org Prolog! If you're a writer, programmer (you don't need to know Prolog), or artist, we're looking for more team members contact anne@swi-prolog.org if interested

Team SWI-Prolog is IN!

We're pre-par-ed for Ludum Dare! 3 programmers, 2 writers, a musician, an artist. Going to write another game in SWI-Prolog! prolog.png

Perchance To Dream of Being Finished...

Our entry is coming along nicely!

We have a complete, playable version of our game, Perchance to Dream...

https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/48/perchance-to-dream

up. (It's still early, we're still working, we're doing Jam! Don't judge us yet!)

It's been a wild ride. The writer crew has been amazing. Programming suffered from time zones and the usual confusion of a game jam. Wrote an entire IF authoring system in a weekend.

Team Trans Rescue

We're Trans Rescue, a small Dutch NGO that helps transgender people escape from places of danger. Most of what we do is deadly serious. This weekend we're taking a break to have some fun and maybe educate folks about the risks trans people face in many places around the world. https://transrescue.org

basic framework up

so, our basic framework is up - late, but we're doing it

We're Trans Rescue

We get trans people out of places where it's dangerous to be trans. It's hard work, so we like to kick back and play sometimes. We're entering LD Compo 59.

Want to do a bit of good with your game jam time? We'll be putting a link to Trans Rescue's donation page on our close screen. So maybe we'll do something for a trans person who needs it.

Know git and some subset of Unity, Blender, texture creation, sound design, C# programming, game design, and/or dialog writing? Drop an email to annie@transrescue.org to let us know you're up for it, with your Github handle and Ludum Dare handle. We're on Unity and probably making a 3D game.

Team Trans Rescue Seeks Members

We're IN for LDJAM 59 We're Trans Rescue- A Dutch NGO that helps trans people escape places it's dangerous to be trans. We work hard, we play hard, we're doing Ludum Dare 59. Want to join? We're on Unity, we figure, but otherwise it's all up in the air until theme time. We might do 3D, lots of us can do that. We work in lots of interesting places, we might try to fit some of that into the theme. We're fairly organized, we have a starter project and such . We'll probably put a beg for Trans Rescue on the endscreen. So joining us would help save trans lives. Want to join? email annie@transrescue.org

Our entry was to be a 3D multiplayer Unity game where you play as a wandering trader in the Western Sahara. It's an area we're familiar with, some of our clients and volunteers come from there. It's loosely based on the real life story of one of of our passengers who escaped an abusive family by crossing a large section of the desert. We were in the terrible situation of trying to help someone lost in the desert when, weirdly, he had a cell signal and could talk with us. He did find his way to the city, and is now living safely in another country.

The idea was to make an unusually large terrain and turn on fog, so you're wandering about. You have a cell phone, and if you're near enough to a village/oasis you can talk to others about what you're seeing. It was to be a multiplayer game about cooperation and trust. We've all been disoriented in an open world game because every inn uses the same interior model and there's only 4 trees. That's commonly a defect, but we made it part of the game play.

As of this writing we're planning on finishing it after the jam.

We didn't finish because we were plagued by ongoing tech issues:

  1. Unity has real issues cooperating with git. Git doesn't properly merge Unity scenes. Lessons learned - make a starter game and insist everyone make a small change to it, practice cooperating as a team.
  2. Unity on windows does NOT like projects coming from Linux. It triggers Windows' Security issues, and is a mess. Don't figure this out like we did during the game - we have one team member who literally doesn't have a working unity environment as of this morning, things are so broken.
  3. Survey your team member's skills, and make sure you have more than one person with each skill involved. I someone doesn't have a lot of relevant skills, find them a role they can do with their skills.
  4. Don't go down rabbit holes. Spent way too much time trying to debug IK on a 4 legged camel
  5. Team members need to communicate. We lost a lot of time because people were 'heads down'

We're team Trans Rescue - mostly volunteers from https://transrescue.org. We have rescued nearly 200 mostly trans people from some of the most dangerous countries on earth. If you'd like to support our work, our donation is at https://transrescue.org/donations/donate.

Thanks to everyone for a fun weekend.
