First Ludum Dare

So this is my first time really putting myself out there and challenging myself to become better at game development. I’m very excited! My only goal is to finish, so I’ll probably be keeping it very simple – maybe overly so.

I’ve worked on a few of my own personal projects in the past, but I’ve only ever completed one. Hopefully this competition gives me a chance to see what I’m made of.

Good luck to everyone!

Edit: After reading some of the other posts, I thought it would be a good idea to share more detail about the tools I’m planning on using.

IDE/Engine: Game Maker 8

Music: I have a keyboard hooked up to my PC so I”ll hopefully be doing some simple custom music.

Sound: I recently purchased a snowball microphone, so I’ll be using that to record some sound effects and do some basic editing with Audacity.

Art: Trying out either some hand-drawn art using a tablet (Auto-Sketch) or just drawing basic shapes, depending on how much time I put into the mechanics.

Ludum Dare 27 – Let’s Keep The Games Rolling!!

And we’re back!

This will be my second Ludum Dare entry, and I couldn’t be more excited. I’m hoping to perform even better this time around.

I”ll be using GameMaker: Studio 8.0 as my engine, as well as InkScape for art and Audacity for audio editing.

Good luck to all!!

Ludum Dare 28 – Changing things up a bit

This will be my third Ludum Dare weekend, and I’m changing things up a bit.

I’ve had some experience with HTML 5 game dev in the past, so I’m going to see what I can do with it in a jam environment. I would love to do something multiplayer using ajax and a PHP/SQL backend, so we’ll see how the time constraints work out.

I”ll be using HTML5 canvas, JavaScript, CSS, as well as InkScape for art and Audacity for audio editing.

Good luck to all!!

Ludum Dare #31 – Much Unity Has Been Learned

Greetings fellow developers!

I’m more excited about this Ludum Dare than any other. This time I’m more prepared with better knowledge and more experience under my belt. I’m ready to give it my all.

Tools: Unity, Inkscape, Paint.NET, GIMP, Audacity

Good luck to everyone!

I’m in!

I’ll be using Unity and Inkscape once again. The “Unconventional Weapon” theme could produce some wacky results.

I finished just in time!

I managed my time fairly well this time around, focusing on the core mechanics before investing too much time into art or sound. I managed to finish all core mechanics and also have a game play loop that doesn’t involve restarting the game!

Found a clue in the planter!

I had a lot of inspiration from the board game Mystery Mansion. It’s quite old at this point but still worth checking out. The general idea was to provide the player with logic clues to find so they could work out the mystery through process of elimination.

Please check it out and let me know what you think! http://ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-32/?action=preview&uid=22088

Late Start, But All In!

I’m joining in a bit later than usual this time, but I’m as ready as ever to get started.

Good luck all!

Here we go again!

I’m very excited for this Ludum Dare! I’ll be trying out a new ECS framework for Unity that I’ve been wanted to implement for awhile. Here are the tools I’ll be using:

  • Unity 5
  • Inkscape
  • Audacity
  • Paint.NET
  • MonoDevelop

Good luck to all!

Just Starting Now

Although I won't have as much time as usual, I'm still giving this Ludum Dare a go. I love the theme this time around.

Good luck everyone!

Here we go again!

Ahh I always look forward to Ludum Dare weekend. This time I'll be utilizing some new knowledge about Unity architecture practices that I've recently researched (using Scriptable Objects). We'll see how that goes!

Planned Tools: - Engine- Unity 2019.1 - Sound Effects- Bfxr - Art- Inkscape and Paint.NET - IDE- Visual Studio 2017

Third Party Tools: - DoTween Pro - Rewired - PlayMaker?

Getting back to Ludum Dare!

I'm so excited to get back into Ludum Dare since my last time during Ludum Dare 44. The plan is to use this wonderful jam as a great excuse to create a prototype for one of the game ideas that have been bouncing around in my head.

I'll be utilizing Unity 2021.1 and the new code architecture knowledge I've been studying for the past few months.

Good luck everyone. Let's finish some games!

I've just finished Unstable Equilibrium!

Wrest control of physics out of the hands of mother nature and into your hands, which are holding a physics-manipulating gun!

This is a prototype for a project idea I've been wanting to expand upon. Originally intended for the Compo - other priorities won out and I missed the Compo deadline, but I was still able to complete it for the Jam. I'd greatly appreciate anyone's feedback.

Thank you for your support!

I'd like to thank everyone who's given feedback and constructive criticism for Unstable Equilibrium thus far. I've begun to expand on this idea with the intention of making it a full-fledged game! This community is so awesome and supportive, and it's a pleasure to be a part of it.

If you haven't played Unstable Equilibrium yet, you can try it out here!

I'm Back For More!

It's been awhile, and I'm excited to finally have a free weekend to take part in Ludum Dare! This game jam has been a huge part of my game development journey over the years.

This time I'm going to try to get back to small concepts and ideas, focusing on making the play experience fun and polished over everything else. Let's get motivated and finish some games!

Ready to dive in!

This is my first time back to game dev in over a year. I'm ready to get back into it! I'll be sticking with the tools familiar to me (Unity and Inkscape). Best of luck to all!

Day 1 progress of my spelunking game

The main mechanics are all there. You can swing back and forth, attach anchors, ascend the rope, and descend the rope. The rope also interacts with the terrain and bends around corners!

ABSEIL is complete!

I got done most of what I wanted to, with the notable exception of audio (gets me every time).

Spelunk down into a cave, placing new anchors and swinging yourself to go deeper.

Try to reach the bottom while hitting as few walls as possible!

Play ABSEIL. I'd really appreciate it!

Some tips about playing ABSEIL

I've added some notes and tips about playing the current version of my game, ABSEIL. Check it out!

NOTE If you’re wondering why you can’t place an anchor, it’s probably because you are either too close to another anchor, or moving too quickly. Also, holding A and D do not swing you, only pressing those buttons while the swing is off cooldown will give you a boost.

Strategy I’d recommend only placing anchors when you have to. It’s easier to reposition yourself horizontally while swinging on a longer rope. Placing an anchor is permanent (in this version of the game). Don’t get stuck!

ABSEIL's Results!

Here are my results: ABSEIL_results.jpg

Overall I'm proud of what I was able to accomplish with this entry! ABSEIL

I do have one question, since I submitted for the Compo, are these scores only compared against others who submitted for the Compo, or are they also compared against those who submitted for the Jam?

I'm in! Going small this time.

I always make something too big. It's time to be small and concise for once! I'm going to use Godot and see how that goes. The thing I'm most concerned about is the web build, so I'll be testing that first, hopefully before the jam goes live.

Best of luck to everyone!
