We are in!

Team blackquiltro is in! (me, my wife and 11-year old nephew)

This is our first game jam ever and our only goals are to have fun and finish the game!

Tools:

  • Godot engine
  • Inkscape an GIMP
  • BFXR
  • Imagination, chinese food and a long walk at least.

Good luck to eveyone

First 24 hours :)

It has been one day already for our first jam and I am very happy with the progress.

Our game idea is quite simple, but I think it has potential to be fun!

So far, most of the game mechanics are ready. Art are placeholders for now. Tonight I will work on AI, so far is just random (although it can work as it is). Tomorrow is mostly art day with the help of my wife and nephew! I will try to polish the thing the most I can.

I have been using GODOT for game developing. This engine is relatively new to me, but for this jam it has been perfect. Good luck to all!

Finally it is ready!

First game jam ever! and it was a fantastic experience for me.

I am happy with the final result. It is a simple gameplay idea and I hope you like it. I pass the test of a couple of 10-year old children that found it fun and interesting.

I need to improve in the art department. I took the character sprites from OpenCameArt and did not have time (or the skill) to make my own (so I opt-out for graphics)

Programming was done in Godot Engine. Very good, easy to work with. Had some problems with exporting he final result, so I could not test as I wanted. Please feedback is welcome.

A-maze-ing Monster Post-Mortem

Hello everyone!

As this was my first jam ever, this is of course, my first post mortem too :)

The good stuff

  • I had a really good time participating in the Jam! Great experience, and theme and time constrains really helped me a lot in focusing. Family was also very supportive, drawing, playtesting and composing sound effects!
  • I think I was able to express the gameplay idea I had in mind in a good way. The final product is a complete game, even if it is unpolished in some ways. I think it is challenging and enjoyable! Of course this is not a neutral opinion :)
  • The mood achieved was good. It was a hard decision to make a game that only shows an small portion of the screen but I think it worked. Sound effects worked great and fitted well (even if they are very cheap quality)
  • The AI worked fine. They are mostly simple algorithms but I think they are challenging enough. Most of it was based on the pathfinding capabilities of the engine used.
  • Godot Engine was great for this type of game. I had little experience using it but I was able to learn it fast. It is easy to use and performed very well. Also exporting to Windows,  Linux and OSX worked great. I develop on Linux and I think Godot has great promise to become THE best open-source engine for game development. And it is open source! You can check it out here: Godot Engine
  • Time management was well done. I did not killed myself, was able to sleep well and had a walk outside with my family. I think the jam is a good balance for me. Compo would have been way to stressful.

The bad stuff

  • I think the maze turned out a bit hard to solve. I would love to make random mazes and or different ones with scaling difficulty but did not had time.
  • Music fits well the game, but the loop I generated was a bit short and some people found it repetitive. I agree.
  • Graphics! I opt-out of this category because i did not had time to make my own characters. Maze tiles are made by us, but I think we needed a more coherent and polished style. Some graphics also turned out low res and did not looked very good. I had some good designs made by my family but did not had time to put them in the game!
  • Bugs! A bug passed that prevented the game over dialog to show when you loose. Also the switching between warrior and monster not always was smooth and the fog of war code was a bit buggy too. Nothing to prevent players to play it anyway.

I think I will perhaps expand this game to something more complete with different types of mazes and ideas I had. Also I would like to tell a story with it.

I would like to thank all people that had voted so far and also commented. Feedback is very valuable to me.  If you have not yet, you can play my game A-maze-ing Monster here.

We are in!

Team blackquiltro is in for its second Ludum Dare!

Hopefully we’ll do better than last time and had the same (or more) fun!

I as a designer/coder will be using Godot as game engine. I’ll start solo tonight but family will join for testing, designing, making art and supporting!

The family will use old school paper, pen and mic for art and sound! (At least that is the idea)

Good luck to all from Chile!!

Ludum Dare 46

Hi! I want to play some Linux games!

Hello, I am a Linux user, and sometimes it is a bit hard to find Linux games to play. Please leave me a comment with your Linux (or HTML) based games.

PD 1: I see some very interesting games that only have a Windows executable. I know we are an small minority but please consider uploading a Linux (and Mac too!) build of your game if you can please!

PD 2: Please play and rate (and comment !) on my entry Tomk.

Is a simple physics based game made with Godot Engine: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/46/tomk

BlackQuiltro joins the Jam!

Hi, wife is out of town this weekend :(

So, I will try to participate for the first time on the Compo category!! (supposedly I will have more time and focus)

Last Jam for me was LD46 with my brother, so I was really looking forward to this one.

I'll be using the amazing Godot Engine, probably a 2D game (but I really want to try to make a 3D game someday)

Good luck to you all!

First time I went for the compo!

Had a great time this weekend. I was able to focus and made a simple puzzle game. If you like tense puzzle games, give it a try!
