LD23

Hi everyone!

I plan to take part in LD23 tomorrow, I’m so excited about it! I have made a few minigames and scripts in pygame and I had to make a game in Java for one of my courses at college…

I’ll probably be creating a 2D or 2.5D using a (very!!) simple game engine that I’ll probably code up for the competition.

Language: python, for portability and because I enjoy using it

Library: pygame

Graphics: GIMP

Sound: sfxr, some kind of tracker? I probably won’t make music for this, but if I have some time to try that out it would be fun!

See you on the other side…

Daaaaaayum!

I kind of slept through the 2am GMT start time – it’s 8:26am GMT now! Oh well. I’ll have to catch up while everyone else is asleep 😉

Ideas…

  • Loneliness
  • Cramped
  • Cosy
  • Small World theory
  • Shrinking
  • One screen

:S thinking of an idea is difficult!

Progress Report, 10:25am GMT

I started only two hours ago, so I’m a few hours behind everyone else.

Where the magic happens.

I have been making some graphics and thinking up ideas. I’m sure you all can guess the genre. :) This is the first time I’ve made an RPG, so I’m learning a fair bit as I go.

It's a farm!

I’ve never really done 2D graphics before, so I chose to use a minimalist 8×8 texture. :) Hope it looks nice!

Soso, RPG sounds ambitious. Already have a clue about the story? Looks nice so far…good luck!

Another progress update!

For the last few hours I’ve mainly been concerned with writing more code, so I don’t have much to show you all right now :)

I made a program that imports JSON map files generated by Qt Tiled into my game! This project is generating quite a bit of code I can use in future games. 😀 😀

It’s been a little slow this past hour…

… but I’ve finally got tiles displaying!

Lots of messing around with lists and lists of lists and I managed to make something appear.

Tiles kind of displaying on the screen.

I hope I get this working soon! It looks like the indices for the tiles generated by Qt Tiled don’t correspond entirely with the ones my tile image import method uses…

ALMOST THERE

Oh wait…. I’ve made the classic mistake of mixing up x and y and height and width. Grr.

Almost made the tiles display properly...

Hmm. Here we are.

Now I just have to make a game.

Yay! More programming done!

I’ve got the camera scrolling working OK and cutesy retro graphics.

Since I’m almost halfway through the compo, it’s time to make some targets!

Things I am yet to do (in no particular order):

  • Add sound effects
  • Add some kind of objective (kill enemies? collect thingies?)
  • Add collision detection
  • Some basic UI – pop up dialogs/tooltips?

Things I might do:

  • Make theme music/ambient sounds

Now for some screen-shots! The title screen was actually the first one I made.

#gallery-1 { margin: auto; } #gallery-1 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 33%; } #gallery-1 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-1 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */ titlescreen gamestart moregamescreen

Woo. Refactoring.

After realising that my code was absolutely awful, I decided to refactor it. Looks way better now. Maybe soon I’ll be able to implement collision detection!! 😐

Done more stuff.

I’ll be honest. I don’t think I’ll be able to finish LD23 in the time limit allotted :( That said, I have made a bit of progress and now the player can edit the map in real time! The next few pictures show the player placing apples in the game world.

Wooooo! Apples everywhere!!

In which our hero finds himself trapped.
