What happened to my game?

It's called Starbage Man and it was published a minute ago and now it isn't.... And then it's back.

Check out Starbage Man

Makers of Starbage Man have a podcast about games!

SideQuestsLogo.jpg Hey there. @william-macfarlane and I have been making a podcast where we talk about video games for a little while now, called Side Quests. After making Starbage Man for the most recent jam we recorded one where we talk about the jam, our experiences and processes, and we get derailed and talk a lot about the relationship between video games and movies and sports.

Side Quests in on iTunes and Stitcher, or you can find us on Sound Cloud.

Post-Jam version of Starbage Man is out!

It took us a little while, since we were often busy with other projects, but the post-jam version of Starbage Man is out!

There are a lot of features that we'd love to add, but we didn't want to do too much expanding without cleaning up the code a lot, which is not what we want to focus on at the moment. We fixed a bunch of the main playability problems, including the flight controls for the starship. I think it's more obvious what is going on while you're flying, since we added flames coming out of the back of the ship while you are propelling yourself. We also fixed some bugs, like the issue with not recognizing letting go of a key when the boss appears.

We added a couple more pieces of Boss Dialogue to make it clearer what is going on, such as the fact that you died. And we fixed a few issues with the order of the tutorial.

We accidentally overwrote the jam version, which we'll try to get back up soon. Check it out: https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/starbage-man

Also, if you want to hear us talking about the jam and lots of other topics (mostly about video games) you can check out our podcast Side Quests! You can find it on iTunes, Google Play Music, Stitcher, Tune In, and Sound Cloud. Here's a link to the one about Ludum Dare, but you should listen to them all!

Check your audio in HTML5 games

Hey, if you have published an HTML5 version of your game it might be worth checking to make sure the audio still plays. Google released a new version of Chrome yesterday that has broken any game that launches when it loads (including mine, we're still fixing it.)

According to this article, it seems that if you include a button on the page that launches your game, rather than it playing automatically, it should work fine.

Our podcast about Ludum Dare and our game Scoop

In addition to making games, we also do a podcast about game design. We also talk a lot about how we teach and learn things and barely ever stay on topic. Our most recent episode is about Ludum Dare and how we made our game Scoop. Unfortunately this time around our lives have been pretty hectic, so we didn't get to play enough games to get 20 ratings, but that's okay.

We've begun!!!

We've got a little art, and a little code, and nothing works yet.

Let's go!

End of day one: it looks like a game!

At the end of the first full day, we have a player character, gems, a bunch of art, a tileset, and you can move around and interact with the gems.

Now to make it fun...
