First Update

Okay, first update. I got something together today but it still needs….a lot of work. Here’s a screenshot:

You can move the green square, and attack the other squares that try to hurt you. Never entered one of these before so I’ve obviously overestimated how much I can get done in 48 hours. I’ll try make it be more of a game in the morning.

Done

Okay, I can’t work on my entry much more so I’m submitting what I have done. Here’s the link: http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/ludum-dare-20/?action=preview&uid=4350

A lot of things I tried didn’t really work out but I’ve learned a lot about what you can actually get done in 2 days, so I’ll be more preprepared next time. Anyway, let me know what you think!

Super Square Zombie Killer

Super Square is spawned into a very strange and dangerous world. There are no other sentient squares, only square eating zombies. Square comes packing heat with a built in arsenal!

Progress after day 1:

Most of the programming is done so I have tomorrow to try make some interesting maps and other content.

Tools:

  • Lua
  • Love2d
  • mtpaint
  • sfxr

LD22 Complete

I’ve just submitted Super Square Zombie Killer as my entry.

Super Square is spawned into a very strange and dangerous world. There are no other sentient squares, only square eating zombies! Thankfully Square comes packing heat!

It was probably about 24 hours work altogether, spread evenly over Saturday and Sunday. I tried to get plenty of sleep but stayed up a bit later than I had planned on Saturday.

Development went smoothly but there are some features I would have liked to put in the game, but due to lack of time I decided to leave them out. Zombies just mindlessly try to move towards the player when they’re within a certain distance or have been alerted. It would be better if they would only start attacking when there is a line of sight between a zombie and the player. Another thing I thought might be add to the game is a fog of war type thing, where you can only see a certain distance around the player and you cannot see through walls.

Lua was great for quick programming and hacking in unplanned features. This was my second time using the love library. It’s pretty good for this type of development, but it’s a bit buggy and its version of Box2D is quite outdated now. Overall I’m pleased with it.

Here’s a list of the tech I used:

  • Lua
  • LOVE
  • sfxr
  • mtPaint
