I'm in!

I'm in and very much looking forward to a fun weekend of game development!

I haven't done much game dev for a while as I've been busy working. Hopefully I'm not too rusty.

I plan on using the following tools:

Engine: Unity Art: Gimp, Blender (If I'm feeling confident enough to tackle 3D) Sound: Audacity and... BFXR? God knows, I never really get the time to consider it during these jams...

Good luck everyone! Can't wait to play the games that get made this weekend.

Progress! Flocking!

Well, I was off to a great start, falling asleep just 30 minutes before the theme was announced in my chair! I woke up a few hours later, looked at the theme and moved to a better sleeping location to dream of ideas.

I woke up with nothing.... After brain storming for a few hours I narrowed it down to a few ideas and decided to go with a sheep herding game. You'll play as a good boye / girl herding sheep to wherever the destination may be. I'm not sure where exactly to go with it just yet but I figured I should focus on the MVP before I get too ambitious.

I went with this idea partly because it seemed achievable with my meager skills but also because I really wanted to play with a flocking algorithm, and that's what I've been doing for the past few hours. Below is a gif of the progress so far.

Let me know what you think! I've never attempted flocking before, so any tips will be much appreciated!

I'd forgotten how much fun Ludum Dare is!

End of Day 1

Well, I'm no where near as far as I wanted to be at the end of day one.

I spent way too long making terrible art assets, they were not worth the time! I also battled with a weird Unity bug where half the colliders where missing on build...

I've implemented a basic UI as well as tweaking the flocking a bit. Here's a gif: Progress2small.gif

I'm still not happy with the flocking. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have more time to play with it.

Finished!!!!

I Juuuust about made it in time.

I'm, not overly happy with me entry. The flocking could be massively improved with some tweaking and I had to use more hacks than I'd like to admit just to get a somewhat finished product on time, but I had a blast!

I can't wait to play everyone's entries and I can't wait to see your feedback!

I'm in!

It's been a while since I've participated and I've not really done much games dev until recently.

I've recently finished the irl stuff that was keeping me from it; buying my first house, getting married to the love of my life. I'm now ready to dive back in and build an inevitably terrible yet hopefully entertaining game within 48 hours.

Good luck everyone!!!

Just in time!

My new laptop has just arrived and I'm setting myself a small challenge. I can only use this hardware for the Jam. Luckily, it's a dual screen laptop!20200417em112448.jpg20200417/em112432.jpg

Unfortunately I'm already facing an issue. After an update, Blender no longer recognises the virtual touchpad. Anybody got an idea on how to fix this?

The laptop is a Zenbook Duo.

Rocky start

I've had a difficult beginning thanks to my restriction on only using the new laptop.

I started by waking up at 7 am and spending a few hours brainstorming ideas. Once I had an idea I felt comfortable with I got straight to work.

Unfortunately, because the laptop arrived yesterday, I spent too much time trying to get the virtual numpad working with blender (and ultimately failed) and not enough time testing all the tools I downloaded worked.

So far I've spent a few hours getting VSCode to run with unity correctly, and then a further hour with OBS recording issue to capture this little gif.

I'm hoping this is the final niggles with the hardware and it'll be plain sailing from here.

Anyway, here's the current state!

I've got basic movement and mouse look in..... a lot more to go!

The idea:

You are an Alpaca. You must protect your flock with the only weapon you have....Spitting! I'm hoping it will be a nice silly game that will make people smile.

End of day one progress

Well I didn't get anywhere near as much done as I had planned. I finished up the very basic core gameplay loop so I'm almost at the MVP. Its definitely not fun yet and will require a lot of work tomorrow.

I also probably spent too much time trying to make a model for the player. I'm not good at art, so it took way longer than needed for the result I got. Oh well!

Tomorrow I'm going to rig and sort out a few animations for the model, as well as a few quick models of the enemies and friendly characters you have to protect. I'll then start adding extra layers to the gameplay and polish polish polish.

I've never failed a Ludum dare yet, so I'm hoping this isn't going to be my first.

Done! ......kinda....

Well, It's a fraction of what I had planned and cobbled together with duck tape and hot glue, but its playable..ish!

I ran into various issues with Unity along the way, and lost a lot of time. Tackling a 3D game when most of my experience is in 2D was a big challenge too, however I learned a huge amount and had fun too, which is all that counts.

I can't wait to play some of your amazing games! After some sleep of course.
