LD32

I’m in =w=

Whooooo~ Greetings from Grade Nine! ^^/~~

Just finished my homework at the speed of 299,792,458 m/s and came to my first Ludum Dare – I’m not going to think about the coming Mock 2 Examination 😛

Finally I decided to directly join the Compo, for I only have a 2-day weekend and no partners 😐 I’m not sure to give a complete, playable game in the end, but whatever. I’m just coming to learn and have fun!

Here let me show off what I’m planning to use for LD32.

OS: Linux (Ubuntu 13.10)

Language: JavaScript along with HTML

Game Engine: Cocos2d-x HTML5 (the Unity player doesn’t always work, especially on Linux…)

Editor/IDE: Geany, or Adobe Brackets

Image: Inkscape

Audio: Rosegarden + Audacity, but I don’t think I’ll put sounds in the game 😛

And BTW I was really thinking about Three Body, a sci-fi novel about space, when looking at the themes in Round 5… Many of these themes are absolutely mentioned in that novel…

I’m not streaming during the 48 hours but will probably write something about what’s going on here. Excited to join the big party! See you guys in 11 hours (I’m going to have a sleep here in China). Best of luck to all!! :)

Just a little progress…

I thought about an idea several days ago, and luckily the theme fits with it! Working hard now. I even missed a lesson for electronic organ (that’s a kind of electronic musical instrument), but that doesn’t matter since I can get it back any time in the future.

Using Cocos2d-x HTML5. Just finished the widgets for drawing circles and tool-tips in the past one hour.

I wonder whether I could finish the game – it’s somewhat complicated…

Whatever. I said I was coming to learn :)

I thought I’m one of the slowest…

… But after seeing the simple (& sometimes strange) pictures consisting of geometric shapes here I stopped thinking so. My progress is not much, though. It’ll be a game about space and alien civilizations. Do you believe these are solar systems…?

My progress so far

After sitting in front of the computer for hours today, I finally managed to make some progress.

Now it really behaves like a civilization: it consumes resources, has its stability (which decreases if developing too fast), and can only see the objects inside the light cone (the big dark blue circle on the scene).

sylvam-opacam-2

sylvam-opacam-3

A big change is that now the development pace of the civilization can be set (while shown by the circles at the bottom) and the development points & levels are counted. What’s more the Energy Dev. Point now has effect – less resources are used by civilizations with a high Energy Dev. Point. Plan to add another feature: more resources are got when the Energy Dev. Level goes up.

Hope I can successfully launch spacecrafts and meet aliens soon :) Good luck to everyone, especially those in the IRC room who still have problems :)

Wow, i like the idea!

See you, everyone

Well, after coding & chatting for a whole day, I don’t think I can still keep working now (it’s 11 p.m. here). I’m going for a rest (probably 8~10 hours) and come back again when there’s 24 hours left!

My work today, in 15 hours including a lunch & a dinner & several short breaks:

sylvam-opacam-4

Wish you good luck. And I also wish I could bring those aliens here tomorrow.

Brought Shenzhou 100 here!

Mm-hm. After a relaxing sleep and another morning’s work I finally got spacecrafts – and Mass Points as well!

Spacecrafts will fly at a very high speed – maybe as fast as 0.5c, or even 0.99c (c = light speed)! Looking forward to putting those in the scene in the afternoon :)

sylvam-opacam-5

One thing I’m not satisfied with my game now is that it’s giving too much words… But I don’t think I’d get this better in a short time.

In the afternoon I’ll probably put alien civilizations here – and use your Unconventional Weapon (Mass Points & Dimension Attack) to prevent some of them (I said, some, not all of them) from destroying your home!

Coming back after lunch.

Finally created the Unconventional Weapon…

The Unconventional Weapons in my game are Mass Points and Dimension Decreaser. Now Mass Points can be used to destroy solar systems. When a civilization loses all of its solar systems and its spaceships, it disappears.

sylvam-opacam-6

The Mass Points can travel as fast as light (at the speed of 300,000 km/s). As we know, the kinetic energy of a moving object is equal to 1/2(m * v2), so Mass Points, of which the v is pretty large, has a considerable energy even it’s only several kilograms in weight and as small as several metres in radius. That’s why they’re ‘Points’.

The next is Dimension Decreaser. I’ll soon talk about it, at least after implementing it in the game :)

PS If you have a better name for this I’d be glad to take suggestions.

Aliens!

Just generated a random galaxy and got these aliens in the universe! The orange circles are stars (or more precisely, solar systems with livable planets), and those with a circle around them are where they settle.

sylvam-opacam-8

I’ve written a method to generate (I think) pretty good random star names, but for aliens I can just call them Civ XXX right now. I think I’d get their names better soon.

Now I’m going to make the aliens move – writing AIs is not that easy, but not that hard as well :)

Oh I nearly forgot that I tried to send them Mass Points, and as what I expected, ‘Boom!’, the civilization on it disappeared :( I hope the AIs will not let this happen easily.

Setting out to write AIs

It’s 00.19 a.m. here. The game is only a few steps away – the AIs. It’s the most challenging part of the game, but can be acceptable even half-done. So, I’ll keep working on them until I can’t make them better, or I feel too sleepy.

No matter what you do, remember to submit the game before going to bed! 😀

Sad ending…

It’s now 2.45 a.m.

I’ve just began writing the tutorial… And not finished yet. I think it would take me another hour to make it. But! I have to go to school tomorrow noon (I’m a little, really, a little, sick and asked for a leave) :(

I think I’d better go to bed now, leaving my work unfinished… Thank you, guys. This is my first LD and I enjoyed it very much :)

Here (on GitHub) is what I left. If you have nothing to do, you can take a look at it. The code is not clean though commented!

Keep working and good luck everyone!! See you in August… probably?

Should I submit?

This is my first LD. I left my work unfinished and went to bed 6 hours ago, for I felt it was impossible to finish it in several hours and I’d be too sleepy then.

Now the game is partly playable, but the instructions are not complete (actually thus a bit confusing) and there are minor bugs. Should I create an Entry for this, or I had better wait until August and remember to choose a simpler goal?

Thanks in advance for help.

I say go for it. Especially so if you want to be able to rate other people’s entries!

Any feedback you can get will be useful for your development! I’d go for it!

I would say give it another 24 hours then submit for the Jam! :)

If it is partly playable, add the instructions and upload it. Minor bugs and documentation can be updated after the initial submission deadline.

You could also add an extra day and enter it as a jam entry, althoug in terms of voting higher standards will be applied by the others, as in the JAM there are teams at work using assets that do not have to be created in the 72h / 48h of this weekend.

If you’re able to explain well enough in a README file or such, I’d say definitely

go for it. I’d love to see if I can figure your game out.

Thank you soooo much for your help! I’d go for it!

Waiting for the end…

This is my first LD. I had a really good time. I gave out 51 votes and received 40. That’s enough for an unfinished game, I think.

I apologize for not being able to play games of everyone who voted for mine. However I realized 2 things when rating games (that’s my own thoughts; you can disagree XD):

1. Use Windows (if possible) when playing games. (Most participants add support for Windows first and some are available only under Windows. I had a hard time playing under Linux before rebooting to Windows…)

2. Accept those complaints (if possible), since they help you make your game and your skills better :)

Well, guys, see you next LD!

Just wanted to add on to #2. Constructive feedback is always great (“I liked X, but I felt Y was lacking”), but purely negative replies that reveal nothing about the nature of the game are unuseful (“This game sucks”). Anyways, Congrats on your first submission!

LD33

I’m out-ish?

Sad to announce that I’ll probably not be able to participate this time. On 22 August (here in China, GMT+8) we’ll set off to… kind of have some training (like what soldiers do, but of course not that heavy) on a campsite…? (Not sure what you call it in English…)

Well, in short there will be only 24 hours for my game if I join. Waiting to see whether I can make a simple game that fits in the theme. My last one eventually appeared to be off-theme 😀 If not, I’ll try to give a game on December (looking forward to the new website :D). Here’s what I’ll use if an idea hits me:

  • Engine: Cocos2d-x HTML5, in JavaScript
  • Graphics: Inkscape
  • Sound (if any): Sfxr / LMMS / Audacity
  • IDE: Atom 😛

And I’m looking forward to seeing more great games! GL & HF people!
