LD31

Ludum Dare 31 is my first!

I’ve always wanted to do a game jam, but for some reason, I hadn’t gotten to it until now. I’m also not sure whether I’ll be doing a Jam or Compo…

So, here’s my design:

Poorly drawn sketches on a mini-whiteboard

Any idea what that is? Yeah, didn’t think so. And the final art isn’t gonna look much better I’m afraid.

Hopefully you’ll be hearing more from me as the day goes on…

Progress!

Nothing like that first moment when you get the core game mechanic working:

There is nothing better :)

Lunch time!

As of right now, I have a fully playable “game”. It’s just not any fun right now because you’re just picking up boxes and there’s nobody to stop you.

That’s going to change right after lunch…

Good night all!

It’s been a fun first day with the Compo! Feeling pretty good about my progress. It’s already a fully playable game, albeit a bit easy and bland.

Tomorrow’s work is already lined up. The biggest job is to add a whole new dimension to the enemy AI so they can collaborate a bit – I think multiple easy enemies will be much more fun than one really hard one. Also, need to finish adding sound effects, and make all the art and animations prettier.

AI is fun.

Just added more enemies to my game (that is, more than one). Their AI is really simple:

1. Target the player and pathfind directly to them
2. If, at any point during this process, you are not the closest enemy to the player within a certain radius, pathfind somewhere random, then go back to 1.

And that made the game SO much more awesome! They’ll corner you in tight spaces and you’ve really got to watch where you’re going.

Now the game is super hard, though, so I think I need a better respawn system…

Finished: The Warehouse!

What a crazy event! This was my first Ludum Dare. Loving it!

I’m calling the game done now. It’s jam-packed with cardboard boxes and ninjas who think they’re Weeping Angels! Nothing left to do but submit! Woooooooooo!

I’m In!

Well, it’s a little bit late for a post, but I’m in on this here Dare thing!

Tools of choice:
– Unity 5
– Paint.NET
– Visual Studio
– Lots of food
– sfxr

My first idea was a Tycoon game where you own a booth at a geek convention called “UnCon” and you have to sell replica swords.

… Needless to say, I’m not making that because I had a much better idea. Which is to say, an idea of at least average quality. I’ve got the basic movement controls down now, which is pretty good progress. I’d show a gif, but I forgot how to make gifs and I’m getting tired. See y’all in the morning!

First look at my weapon… and a bug

So here’s (one of) my unconventional weapons: A gun that shoots guns. I’m not concerning myself too much with how this actually works, but hopefully it’ll make for some cool gameplay!
But there’s something I need to fix…

lol… that sounds so much like one of the lines from my initial brainstorming session: “the bullet fires the gun”

First enemy completed!

Just finished my first enemy – this is a creeper-style robot that explodes when it gets close to you!

SHOW US THE GUNS

That moment when you realize why your game isn’t fun.

  • It’s a game based on experimenting with crazy and impractical weapons.
  • The objective is to destroy as many enemies as possible.
  • The only enemy type so far is a creeper-style robot that detonates itself.
  • As a result, you can play the entire game without firing once.

*facepalm*

Now it’s time to make a better enemy…

That’s always the hardest part – when your game works, it’s exactly as you imagined it, and it’s not fun. That’s one of the biggest lessons of ludum dare about the value of prototyping. Good luck!
