Clocking on.

Morning all from sunny Huddersfield.  It is actually sunny here for a change but sadly I can only see a tiny bit of the outside world from my prison for the next 48 hours, I mean delightfull cellar workspace.

It’s my first Ludum Dare and my first game competition so I’m not sure how I will get on but I’ll give it a go.  The theme seems a bit limited to me but that is probably my just limited saturday morning brain.  Anyway I just wanted to say hello and good luck all.  I’m looking forward to playing all the games, I just hope we don’t all make the same one ; )

P.S. No exciting breakfast photos here sadly as I’ve already eaten it.  I’ll try and remeber to take a photo tomorrow. Of tomorrows breakfast that is, not of todays breakfast. That would just be wrong! Back to the code face.

And the award for least inspiring screenshot goes to…

It may not look like much but It’s been a good day and it’s pretty much playable.   Lots of things to do tomorrow though, not least improve the graphics as it does look about as exciting as a crossword at the moment. Time for some rest now though.  Happy coding. See you all tomorrow.

Happy Breakfast

Very liquid based but that is all I can manage at this time on a Sunday Morning. Being up this early and not being at a carboot sale, it’s just not natural.  I predict a more substantial bacon based brunch later to address this unholy liquid / food imbalance. MORE NING ALL!

Murus Final

Woo Yay and Hoopla. I’m finished.  That was fun but I’m knackered and really need some rest. Good luck to the rest of you, hope you all get finished. I’m looking forward to playing some of the games tomorrow.

Heres a link to the download : danblack_LD14_murus.zip

It’s windows only. Have a play. Hope you like it. It’s better than the screenshot suggests.

Two Timer

Hello again all you crazy kids.  I’m really looking forward to having another crack at this.  I’m not particularly inspired by any of the themes(yet) but hey that’s democracy for you.  My first attempt was Murus for LD14 but it’s all change this time.  That was all done in stuffy old C and SDL . This time I’m embracing this new fandangled tubular internets thing and going to have a go at making my first flash game.  I shall be using some, none or all of the following  :  Flash Develop, Flixel, PaintShopPro5 (yeah what of it!), SFXR, Musagi and Codeheads bitmap font generator.

Zzzzzzzz-time

Here is a very uninteresting screen shot of my (slow+interupted) progress so far.   I’ve chosen metal detecting as my take on the theme of discovery. What will he discover next.  Beep beep, could it be a hoard of gold roman coins… Nope, it’s another rusty nail.  Oh the thrill of discovery.

LD19's most boring screenshot so far?

G’night all.

The shovel-wielding fellow looks great in a way I can’t describe.

The Detectorizer

Well I’ve submitted it so I suppose it’s finished. Sadly I ran out of time for a lot of the niceties I’d have liked to have added but it is playable. Although it is intentionally a bit evil so play with caution.  You need sound to hear the metal detector.  Have a go, see what ‘exciting’ things you can discover.

Half in

Due to an unfortunately timed Fiesta (Moros y Cristianos) and other inconveniently timed prior commitments It’s going to be more like a 48minute rather than a 48hour challenge for me this time round.  My current plan is to use the first 24h for an intensive partying planning session and then try and cobble something together on the last day.  It’s going to have to be even simpler then usual but my personal aim is to try and make something better looking than my previous entries.

As for tools I’m going to stick with Flixel, SFXR and my trusty and dusty copy of Paint Shop Pro 5 (13 years young and still going strong ^^).

Nematode – end of day 1

I’m nowhere near where I was hoping to be at the end of the first day but at least it’s starting to take some kind of shape.   I have gone down the inner space kind of tiny worlds route.  Specifically the tiny microscopic world of microbes and nematode worms.  The worms are in and wriggling and at the moment it is like an interactive toy.  Tomorrow I will hopefully make it into a game but now it’s time for some much needed sleep.  Mañana is going to be a busy day.  Goodnight all.

Morning from Andalucia

Morning all.   I treated myself to some bacon from back home and freshly squeezed orange juice for a delicious Anglo-Andaluz breakfast.  I’m now ready for another day at the code face.  I hope you’re all suitably recharged and raring to go. Lets make some games.

Nematode update

Well it’s not really playable yet as there is still lots I need to implement, but here is a version to play with if you have a few minutes spare.  The aim will probably be to feed worms different coloured food to match the colours of the worm in the bottom left corner.  It’s very hard to feed the worms though even though I’ve shrunk the play area to 80 x 60 large pixels. So there might have to be a gameplay rethink.  The idea being that it’s a tiny world in petri dish that you can see through a microscope and influence by dropping food.  Time is getting tight so I better crack on.  As always any feedback appreciated.

Nematode finnished. Time for some sleep.

Well it’s finished in the sense that I’m stopping working on it.  It’s a bit fiddly to play but I am quite happy how it’s turned out. I’ve just submited it here and I also did a quick blog post here.  Hope you like it and good luck finishing your games if you haven’t finished them already.

Villain of the piece

screen1

I did some pixels yesterday and if I get time later I want to make this into a simple auto-runner.  So time permitting I’m in.

LD26

I’m in and I like the theme

I checked the theme on my phone in bed and already had several ideas before getting up.  It’s nice to have such a broad theme for a change.  I would say that though as most of my games are pretty minimal.  For example Nematode for LD23 and of course Dog Game #1.

I’ve been using Haxe/NME recently so I am going to use that this time round and I’m going to target HTML5 and possibly Flash.  For beeps I’ll use one of the web derivatives of SFXR and for the few graphics I plan to use I’ll stick with my trusty and dusty copy of Paint Shop Pro 5 : )

End of day one update.

It’s not got a name yet but it’s almost playable and pretty minimal.

ld26

You simple pick up shapes from the top and drop them on matching shapes that rise from the bottom on the screen.  The aim is to stop any shapes from reaching the drop line.  The line is also the lowest point you can drop shapes from.  Time from a break.

Slow start to Sonar

Use sonar to dodge icebergs beneath the surface.  No Icebergs or sonar yet but it’s a start.

I probably shouldn’t have spent the last 2 hours playing Salibandy(Floorball) but at least I’ve had a break from the screen. Here we go again.

Mmm scones

scones

Homemade scones, with jam and fresh cream.  Excellent motivational food.  It’s like being back in Blighty.

those look really good.

LD34

In for a penny, in for a pound.

I’ve not used it yet but I’m going to try and use Pico-8.  If nothing else I’ll find out whether I like it or not by the end of the weekend.

As usual I’ve not had any time for preparation, but I do have a few bottles of Club Mate chilling, so it’s not all bad.  Here we go again.

Cold Pizza and Club Mate

A slice of last nights leftover pizza and a cold bottle of Club Mate. What better way to start LD34. Breakfast of champions.

I didn’t vote for either of the themes, in fact I down-voted 2 buttons, but together they seem pretty good.  Well the ideas are flowing which is a start.  Early days but I’m thinking ‘Dungeon Crawler’ at the moment.

Lets do this.
