Ludum Dare 46

How we manage to beat the 72 hour limit with 7h of time zone

Hello there, during my first LD46 I worked for the first time with Unity and was a really cool experience, My friends and I worked hard to produce a platform game based on Hollow Knight mood and experience, we have started everything from scratch but was really hard to put everything in the right pieces before the time got expired.

But we work from different countries specifically we have a friend with 7h fuso so we swap night and day time with meeting at 1am before going to bed and 8am when we wakes up. It was crazy but also really fun and the result was seriously unexpected.

I have so much fun and learn a lot from this experience!

We really appreciate the kind support and the feedback given from the community here, I was expecting some disruptive critique and I only receive valuable feedback, appreciation or insight!

Thanks you all!

8BEATS - Loop Defender

Oh my god!

This Ludum Dare was so cool! I'm quite exhausted but this year I managed to develop a Unity project on my own for the first time, (well technically, it was a JAM, and my team really helped me with the assets and everything) but the coding part was my burden!

I was really impressed with what we created from literally nothing!

Now I'm going to bed, hope you enjoy it!

Just have a look

I just play tested it and reached 15330 8beats!

Remote vs all together

Hello there,

I'm here to ask you a question, that suddenly rose in my mind!

Last LD46 in Italy we were in a complete shut down, and my friends and I decide to participate to that LD playing remotely. It was really cool and we manage to work with one of our best who lives in Japan. So a big success, this time we can freely jam together but without even asking ourself what was the best we simply worked remotely as usual. I personally spent like 8 hours in a call with one of them to decide some assets and some other micro variation of the game, but also appreciate the moment of silence where I can deep dive into the code.

But the question is this one, how do you play Ludum Dare? All together, remote, in a completely different way? What the pro of be all together? What the pro of be remote?

Shoot freely your answer! I'm curious

Itch analytics, for 8beats

I really like the way itch.io offers an easy way to track the amount of player who enjoy your games. Most of the games are hosted on itch but I've seen some other minor games hosted on different platform. I used twitch by myself for the first time and i was really impressed on how easy and useful it is.

Btw despite I hoped to get more players I really appreciated to have been able to makes 100 people involved in my game! Also thanks for all the feedbacks and the time spent making some good beats inside the game!

If you haven't tried yet, gave it a glimpse at https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/47/8beats

In the end the scoring system is fun and helps for feedback but the most important part is gave people the possibility to enjoy your game, and be able to produce a little working game in just a couple of days.

Age of Dwarves, or when you really want to make a RTS but you never tried

Well this time we did it.

We never try an RTS, it's a crazy experience as usual but RTS require units, buildings, timing, play tests and technology tree, resources collection and lot's of stuffs.

They are not suitable for a 3 day competition! There are too many things that can go wrong in 3 days!

But starts from the beginning, first of all, the development of the game, you must introduce:

  • who you are: dwarves
  • enemies: goblin, troll, spider...etc..
  • buildings: spawner, dwarves slots, resource slot, fighter unit spawn, builder unit spawn
  • resources: dirt, iron, gold, diamonds, mithril

Than you had to design the level, the progression how the game get played etc..

Sometimes you have no time to design a better interaction after the first one you develop. Oh I wish I had more time to implements a better dwarves' selector, like something drag and drop and select a bunch of dwarves, but we had to keep the "pick only one" because was the first things we did and we can not change it at the end.

Sometimes you have to prune lot of mechanic you would like to introduce, like advanced building, where only specialized unit can build, or advanced trait of a dwarf where you can upgrade the stats of a unit by performing some operations.

In the end I really love the experience and the challenge, we try something new and something fun and I'm not regretting anything. Moreover we had lots of positive feedback and I'm really grateful for this community.

Only those who dare to try, fail.
