I'm in!

My first ever Ludum Dare, or GameJam for that matter. Always wanted to make a game, always been too lazy to do it! I have not the slightest clue what I'll make in the 72 hours, but I'm looking forward to seeing all the awesome stuff that other people make!

I'll be using plain old JavaScript, because I'm too lazy to learn how a compiler works.

* Good luck everybody! :grinning: :grinning: :grinning: *

Progress report! (#1)

It's 2:30 my time, I'v been working on my game just under 3 hours now. I've spent far too much time working on the player movement only to decide I didn't like it, but hey ho, Ludum Dare and learn. Probably should have spent some more time revising how vectors work in math though...

On the bright side, I have my game all planned out after I was up all night thinking about it! If I can make it I hope it'll be a good bit of fun. I also made a few tiles, so that's fun!!

Progress report (#2)

7:51pm my time. Hasn't been as productive of a day as I would have liked it to have been, but not disastrous either (and I'm still carrying on into the night).

I've got movement working just fine now, as well as the code to render the level and the UI. Also got some basic projectiles going, which are a surprising amount of fun to spam everywhere (too bad the theme is about 'running out').

Now creating a tutorial, so that I can see what kind of system I'll have to use to store the levels. It's actually quite cathartic manually entering tiles and entities and things.

I doubt I'm going to have much time to polish by the end of the Jam, but I think I'm about on track to have a complete game (a rubbish one perhaps, but a complete one none the less!)

Progress report (#3)

Wrapping up for the night! It's 5 to midnight!

I'm actually pretty happy with my progress today, in the next 1 day, 20 hours and 58 minutes left, I might just have the best game I've ever completed! (By sheer technicality of the fact that I'll be the only game I've ever completed, but that's good enough for me! Your prize is your product!)

I've got tile rendering, power ups, projectiles, a system for storing level data, and the beginnings of a combat and enemy system! I haven't got any cool screenshots though, so have this sprite sheet instead.

(It's like a sneak peek! But not as cool...)

Progress report (#4)

Well Howdy everybody! Just woke up, had me some breakfast, and fixed an annoying bug with surprising amounts of ease! Beginners luck is in the bag!

Today I'll be finishing off the combat system and then adding content to the game, including balancing out the tutorial level. I would like to make procedurally generated levels, but we'll have to see how much time I have left today! The Jam ends in a day and 9 hours after all!

Looking through the front page feed, it's incredible to see the work that people have done! Some people have finished their game already, and the Compo isn't even over yet! My point is, you're all awesome! Keep up the awesome work, I look forward to playing your game!

Progress report (#5)

Well, it 7:50, and an ok day's work so far. I figured I wasn't likely to have time to make a level generator, so I spent some time polishing up the tutorial instead, so that it can at least somewhat showcase what the game would be like. That said, how easy do you reckon it is to make a level generator in 4 hours?

How about a couple of screen shots before the servers go down?

Progress report (#6)

Remember when I said can I make a procedural level generator in 4 hours? I did it! It hasn't got much content to work with, but hopefully with the rest of tonight's work and the work I do tomorrow morning I can give it enough to work with. It needs a little tweaking to make sure that levels are power balanced, but the core of it is working, which makes me VERY happy!

Also managed to add a tad more polish to the tutorial, there's still a collision bug, but don't you worry about that! (it only affects the bad guys anyway! We'll pretend it's a visually odd feature!)

12:30 at night and still going ok. I do want to wake up tomorrow though, so I'll probably go to sleep soon. Have a good sleep y'all!. Or a good day should that be the case for you. Whatever works for you!

Progress report (#7)

6 hours left! I've patched up my level generator so that it balances power pretty well, and even added a 'boss' of sorts and a mini map. Turns out when you use programmer art a lot of rooms end up looking quite similar to each other.

It hasn't got a lot of handmade content to work with yet, but hopefully a few hours will be plenty of time to create some for it! I've already tested uploading the game for people to play, so I shouldn't have any problems with that. Good luck to everyone else working on the last minute crunch!

Progress report (#8)

Well! Submission hour+ is now over! It's been an awesome three days this Ludum Dare thing!

In the rest of today I managed to add enough content to the game to make it surprisingly fun, and even added a new bad guy. I like to call them Jeff, Jeff just wants to say hi.

Batteries in the dungeon is now online and set to go. It's got a tutorial, it's got randomly generated dungeons, and all the while, you're running out of power! What more could you ask for in life?

Play it here https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/39/batteries-in-the-dungeon

Go on, you know you want to.
