So this was my first Ludum Dare and I enjoyed the fact it forced me to complete something and also the fact that I already have 50 ratings, initially I was hoping to get to the 20 ratings mark to at least receive a result, but now I am hoping to get to 100. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/42/the-city-of-forgotten-toys, link to the game. If anyone is having any difficulty figuring out how to play or not making it to the Mayor check out, https://www.twitch.tv/videos/297450872, and 4 hour 11 minute mark.
Day 1
Log in at 6 p.m. and keep refreshing the page and see the major lag. Eventually figure out the theme is running out of space and sink because I was coming up with ideas for decay and evolve, I downvoted this choice and was a little disappointed. I asked my family members for brainstorming ideas and got mainly space related games, which I did not really want to make. I finally came to the idea that when you run out of space in the house you must get rid of toys. Initially you were going to play as a toy and try to just dodge long enough and not end up in the donation box. I also struggled with deciding between 2d and 3d, I created planes and deleted them. Drew a 2d toy artwork that I really liked which initially was going to be the protagonist but turned into the teddy bears you pickup, but since I really liked the artwork I went with 2d, also I was having trouble using Blender. So, I nailed down the idea and it slowly evolved to you being the helping hand and instead of avoiding being donated the goal was to donate twos. I got the basic level design and movement. I wanted to add music and sound effects. I tried using Bosca Ceoli, but could not get sounds I liked, so decided to make my own sound effects.
Day 2
Most of the basic structure is done and wake up early to continue. At this point the game feels a little boring so come to the conclusion I want a second level. I draft this out and start putting together the elements and know it will be a boss battle with the Mayor. So levels put together and idea for boss battle in place.
Day 3
Put together the start menus and transition scenes, really should have made a tutorial. Complete the boss battle and get to building the game. Try to upload the game a few times but keep not having a working version, since I did not zip the entire file. Now I know going forward what needs to be in the file for the game to run.
The experience was fun the feedback has been positive and constructive. I am working on adding a new level and team the Yarn Brigade. See the attachment for the leader of the Yarn Brigade. I will keep iterating on this and making sure people know how to play your game is the most important and it seems the words just didn't explain it well enough.
and the Mayor one more time,
