Getting ready!

Forum and blog up on http://darkdroid.com and I’m currently working on open-sourcing my game engine built on LibGdx here: https://github.com/dkoding/ludum-engine

Tools of choice: sfxr/Audacity for sound, jcgmusic for music, Gimp and my mediocre hand drawing skills for graphics.

I’m going to use Java and LibGDX and good ol’ trusty IntelliJ IDEA for my programming – and hopefully the game theme will be something that my engine is suitable for!

Time to get to work!

6 AM – time to get to work!

I’ve thought about the theme ‘An Unconventional Weapon’ and I have to say I am quite pleased with it.

Browsing the net for ‘unconventional weapon’ yields weapons of MD, chemical and biological weapons etc but I don’t want to go that way – thinking back I remember games like Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Dig Dug and Solomon’s Key – I will probably make something along those lines.

First, coffee and chocolate, then I’ll get on with some drawing!

First day is over! Time to sleep!

Wow that was exhausting. But i am quite happy with the results. Base mechanic is implemented and the game is in a playable state.

Tomorrow I’ll start on the polish!

Go to http://dkit.no/ld-32 for a rather recent demo…

My first Ludum Dare – Quick update after rating 88 games

After rating 88 games today I must say I am really impressed by all the talent and creativity I am witnessing – I haven’t been this inspired in years!

People have made stuff during these 48-72 hours that game studio professionals would and should be envious of. The future of gaming has never been this bright.

Good work people! You should all be proud!

How do you rate this many games in a day. I’m still under 30 and i’ve been at it for hours. XD

Then I guess I did get some fairly long ones and 100%ed all that have an ending.

I can’t believe it!

Unbelievable!

Approaching ONE HUNDRED VOTES! 😀

Please help me cross the threshold!

How to record a small film strip from your game

slicklicker

So how to add a video like this for your game?

Install Fraps or your favorite game screen recording tool.

Install VirtualDub

Open and edit your video in VirtualDub

Add filters: Menu/Video/Filters/Add… and add the select 2:1 reduction (high quality) twice to create a video with quarter of the size

Change framerate: Menu/Video/Frame rate/Change frame rate to 25 fps

File/Export/Animated gif, select target, and choose ‘Infinite loop’.

You’re all set! Don’t forget to rate my game SLICK LICKER!

Slick Licker Timelapse

Unfortunately the timelapse is for the first day only, as my computer decided to collapse in the middle of day 2!

I was lucky to salvage this lot…

Hope you enjoy it!

And remember to play and rate my game SLICK LICKER!

I’m in!

LD32 was too much fun to not join this time as well. :-)

Hopefully I will place better this time!

Lesson learned: Less is more!

Good luck everyone!

Tools: My own ludum-engine based on Java/LibGDX, Inkscape, Gimp, Audacity, Sndfxr, and CGMusic

Starting to get hyped!

I’ll use my open source game engine as a base this time as well: https://github.com/dkoding/ludum-engine – and you can too!

It is based on LibGDX/Java.

For sound I’ll use sfxr/bfxr or record and distort my own voice.

For music the good old jcgMusic, probably do some conversion to a chiptune.

Audacity for sound editing, Gimp for gfx editing, InkScape and my tablet to draw.

I have ideas for the themes ‘A world in the skies’ and ‘You are the monster’, either of those are fine.

‘Beyond the wall’ is an obvious Game of Thrones reference… The other themes need a little bit more thought.

7 hours to go!

First day finished! Quite happy with the result!

I finally decided on a name:

hungry

I spent most of the day today to create the effect you see here: (Spatters, trails etc).

chtoad2

Tomorrow I will have to create some actual gameplay!

I’m opting for a simple art style this time, as I got some feedback last time that it was a mixed back of chaos. :-)
