Preparations

's-Hertogenbosch by Night

While the streets of the beautiful dutch city ‘s-Hertogenbosch are relatively empty because everyone is celebrating “Sinterklaas“, I am preparing myself for my first Ludum Dare! I bought some crappy food  (pizza, noodles, spring rolls etc), and some beers to make the wait until 03:00 a.m. (UTC +1) a little easier.

IMG_0004My plan for today is:

  • wait until 03:00 a.m to see what the theme is,
  • make up 5 or so concepts fitting the theme, and make a rough planning
  • go to bed so I can start fresh tomorrow morning

Let the games begin!

Waiting...

First concepts

The theme is announced, and I wrote down the ideas that immediately popped up in my head. It’s 04:00 a.m. and i’m going to sleep with my notebook on my nightstand so I can write down any inspiration.

Happy developing and i’ll see you tomorrow morning.

Yes, I want to add nosepicking, smoking and farting as a gameplay element, i’m classy like that.

I completed my first Ludum Dare!

So I submitted my game! I really like my product, and I might even go on with it this month to add more gameplay and polish it up. I’m feeling pretty good after two days of non stop programming and creating visual assets. Especially the visuals took a lot of time, I guess 50% of all the time I spent on this game.

So, my game!!!

It is called The Fast and the Flatulent!

You are a guy standing in a video arcade, playing a racegame. But while you are playing you get distracted by a couple of things. You’ll have to fart in time to avoid pooping your pants, and there is a guy who gets in front of your screen!

You control your left hand with your ASD-keys, and your right hand with your mouse.

This is what it looks like in the end:

I really wanted to export it for Web, but for some reason it doesn’t work. It only shows a white square :(. So if anybody knows how to fix this, please let me know.

why doesn't this work!? :(

Happy voting and see you all next time!

From this huge red label I can say you’re using beta version of unity 4.6, while final version of it has released. Try to reinstall it and reexport your game – it will be compatible and you can add web port after submission hour.

Not in time, but still in time

OLD POST:

While there were 15 seconds left on the Compo-clock, the Compo-radiobutton was greyed out, so I couldn’t submit my game for the compo.

So I submitted it for the jam, even while I sufficed for the Compo rules.

EDIT

I sent Mike a tweet, and within 5 minutes he responded that I forgot to click all the buttons. Let’s just say I’m really tired 😉

But after all, here is my game: Man Simulator.

You’ll have to do 2 manly tasks to become a man again, after you’ve lost your beard!

You can play it HERE

This will be my 5th Ludum Dare participation so I have a little bit of LD experience, but it is always exciting what the theme will be, and what I am able to come up with.

There are no guarantees for a successful product  !

Yeah I finished my 5th Ludum Dare!

After a very slow start, I had built the world, a horse and some bat enemies after the first day. But it was soooo boring to play. The bats were static, and the jumping did not feel responsive at all.

On the second day I kept on tweaking but it didn't get any better. But 5 hours before the deadline it got me...

I created bats that followed the player, and added a dash-jump on top of the regular jump. Suddenly it was fun to play, so I quickly made a second level based around the dash-jump, placed some bats in them, and then time was up... But now it is fun to play (I think)!

I'm In!

Looking forward to my 6th partaking! Hopefully, I will not overscope like always :)

Also, I added jalapeños to my pizza and now I'm burning inside.

Good luck everyone!

Yay, I finished my 6th LD!

# Salty Business

This was definitely the hardest LD I participated in so far. A lot of scripts are interconnected and it became a big mess very quickly. But I made it and I'm glad I pulled through :)

It is about a sailing boat who wants to go on a sailing trip (!?!), but it needs some money. So you have to buy and sell goods between the 5 islands in the ocean.

There is some silly dialogue and some silly SFX, so enjoy!

My thoughts on things (?)

The December jam

I'm sad to see the 3rd jam go! It was a perfect amount for my yearly schedule, but Mike should do what's best for him. I'll probably pick another yearly game jam to participate in, so I can get my quota of 3 jam games a year :)

The theme suggestions

There have been a lot of complaining about the theme the last couple of LD jams. I'm sure that it has been proposed before, but would it be an idea to keep the theme suggestions as they are, and also add a second theme contrived by an industry legend or something? So you can choose which one you want to work with.

My theme suggestions

  • Caught in a Capsule
  • Release the Animals
  • Unholy Playing Field

Snowman

Chicken Out!

Businessmen want to take over your farm! Use your own chickens to fend them off…

ChickenOutShort.gif

Originally I wanted make this game for the Compo, but on Sunday at 10pm got an idea... So I decided to keep working on it for another day.

At first the chickens just exploded when hitting the enemies, but when I added the bounce to the chickens it got fun! So naturally I also needed a combo multiplier. I used the 3rd day to implement that combo multiplier and added more stuff to the level for the chickens to bounce on.

I'm pretty satisfied with the result, and I hope you like it!

My suggestions

I always try to come up with themes that won't restrict the maker in terms of genre, gameplay, setting etc., but rather give something to get the creativity juices flowing.
